  1. That's from an article on Grantland almost two weeks ago. Awesome read... We Need a Renegade Basketball League
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 12:53 PM) This organization operates best when it's an underdog and Theo coming to town makes them just that. These next couple of years are going to be Theo v. Kenny as Ventura and presumably Sandberg settle into their managerial positions. Hopefully, this challenge will re-focus Williams and we'll see the results on the field. Whelp, that didn't take long. The Sox shouldn't pay attention to what the Cubs are doing, unless Theo loses his mind and calls and offers on Dunn or Rios.
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 12:14 PM) I would take Theo over KW in a nano second but some Cub fans think this is going to help them right away and that just simply isn't the case. Gonna take a few years. Yeah, Theo will need to clean house both on the field and off, and get the right guys to run his system and research. It's a great move for the Cubs, though.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 11:28 AM) That would be incredibly stupid of them. No TV rights = no $$. You do hate the players. Man, tv stations would be falling over themselves trying to air those games. It'd be nuts.
  5. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) All good when winning.................BS when losing............... See blowup dolls in locker rooms.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 08:38 AM) Ah, man, marcus robinsons one game against the vikings was so great. He and big Jim Miller just bombin' it all day long.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 01:25 AM) Johnny Knox is the first receiver that I can say is legitimately good in a long, long time, and really that is handicapped because there are still a ton of things Knox does wrong. I think your definition of "legitimately good" is about as far from reality as possible. Knox is fast, but his hands are suspect, he runs out of bounds, and he shies away from contact like Oprah avoids treadmills. He's the cream of the crop, but this crop is infected and buried in manure. Marcus Robinson, btw, was legit as hell, but that injury after his breakout season effectively ruined his career.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 08:16 AM) espnchijon jon greenberg WEEI reporter says Theo's deal is 5 years, $15 million of they can figure put compensation. Compensation is believed to involve prospects and nothing on the ML roster (reports of Garza/Castro were just silly). Honestly, I'm excited for the Cubs. This is a pretty big deal for that roster, and I have enough friends who would be so happy to see them not suck that I hope it works out.
  9. QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 04:39 PM) ya it just seemed like hey you want the job? sure why not. didn't take away any passion, fire, etc from that press conference. It sounded more like "Sure, why not? As long as it doesn't interfere with anything that I actually care about in my life."
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) So it's not a lack of effort, he's just incompetent. Clearly the dude fields phone calls and sends scouts out and works, he's just s***ty at his job and has a s***ty team around him. Players, Coaches, Management All.Bad. save a few.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 02:57 PM) Anderson was also pretty good, at least for a season. Isn't he doing ok with his new team? Yeah, it was interesting that he fell out of favor here. He didn't do much in Houston last year, but is off to a pretty sweet start with the Pats this year being used solely as a rusher on passing downs. 4 sacks in 5 games.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) but there are quite a few players in here that you have ripped to shreds for no reason at all. The biggest two to me are J'Marcus Webb and Earl Bennett. Earl Bennett didn't play his entire rookie season... just because... That's unacceptable for a 3rd round draft pick. As for Webb, just because he's been thrust into the starting role his first two years doesn't make him a good player or a good pick. It's just simply more evidence that Angelo can't build a complete team.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 02:03 PM) I'm not excusing ownership ignorance. But some teams are forced into s***ty contracts. Imagine if Reinsdorf decided to be "smart" with his money and not sign any max-deal FA's this last off season. Think the fans would have been ok with an excuse that he was merely trying to run an efficient business? Or was the market set for a number of guys to get max money and the Bulls were basically forced into giving Boozer a max deal (even though he's clearly not worth it) because they might have missed out on signing any of the big FA's. In as much as these measures are in place to stop ignorant owners, it's also to stop other ignorant owners and to keep the league healthy and in balance. You might want to check the figures on Boozer's deal. It's nowhere close to a max.
  14. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 12:32 PM) I'm calling it right now... The Avengers will be bigger than The Dark Knight Rises and will be king of 2012. Hm. I can't say that's a bad bet. Both will be huge and seen by me on opening night.
  15. Rumor has it the Indians might decline the option on Grady Sizemore due to repeating knee injuries.
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) Steve, The point I was making is that if anything Angelo has killed the team by trading high draft picks for marginal returns. People are just overrating the success rate of 3rd round or worse picks. Angelo has killed this team pretty much in all facets. He's pissed away a decade's-worth of good defense while continually failing to build an offense. Now, everything's about to come to a boil as he's drafted so poorly that we have no replacements for the rapidly declining players who have kept us afloat for so long.
  17. QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 12:26 PM) I don't think I like this direction they seem to be going in with the hitting coaches. Having three people telling our hitters what to do at one time is not a good thing, in my opinion. They certainly would have a hard time getting our hitters to perform worse...
  18. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) It is literally impossible to do a worse job with 2nd and 3rd round picks than the Bears did that year. 2011 is certainly looking to match 2007 in that category.
  19. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) Anyone have experience with a reliable website for buying cheap jerseys that are solid in quality? NFL in particular. http://17nfl.com/
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) Steve, Check other teams success rates. They may be marginally better, but the reality is the Bears problem is not having high draft picks. Since 2006 the Bears have had 3 1st round picks and 5 2nd round picks. In comparison the Patriots have had: 4 1st round picks and 11 2nd round picks. Packers have had 6 1st round picks and 8 2nd round pcks. Bears- 8 1st and 2nd round picks Patriots- 15 1st and 2nd round picks Packers- 14 1st and 2nd round picks I dont care if your Bill Walsh, you are going to have a tough time with that few 1st and 2nd rounders. (edit) The problem is the Bears are averaging basically 1 player in the 1st/2nd per year, where as better teams are averaging over 2 per year. Thats a big difference and helps keep your team young. I only said Angelo was okay, not that he was good or even average, just that he did pick Forte and a big hit like that should make up for a lot of misses. It's not like the high picks simply disappeared against Jerry's will. Angelo makes very questionable trades. I obviously support the Cutler deal, but then he's done nothing to improve the offense around Jay to give him the opportunity to succeed. Angelo dealt a 2nd rounder for a busted 1st round pick. I won't hate on him for the fact that said player died (Gaines Adams), but he still paid a hefty price for a bust.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) Frank Thomas is on twitter... @TheBigHurt_35 best news of the day
  22. I think I'd have somehow talked myself into loving PK as player/manager.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 11:24 AM) Now Kenny on the other hand... ChuckGarfien Chuck Garfien Kenny Williams said that he did consider making Paul Konerko player-coach. Crazy.
  24. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 11:30 AM) Steve, Angelo is okay at drafting, his problem is that either he gets it right or completely misses. You can live with that as long as you supplant your team with free agents. Let's review the last many drafts. 2011 1 29 Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin 2 53 Stephen Paea DT Oregon State 3 93 Chris Conte FS California 5 160 Nathan Enderle QB Idaho 6 195 J.T. Thomas LB West Virginia 1st round - OT Gabe Carimi - too early to call, but the promise is there. The rest? Also too early, but my money is on "complete s***". 2010 3 75 Major Wright FS Florida 4 109 Corey Wootton DE Northwestern 5 140 Joshua Moore CB Kansas State 6 181 Dan LeFevour QB Central Michigan 7 218 J'Marcus Webb OT West Texas A&M Picks in rounds 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 - all are bad. The crown jewel Major Wright is terrible. Did get Jay Cutler, whom they haven't bothered to protect. 2009 3 68 Jarron Gilbert Defensive Tackle San Jose State 3 99 Juaquin Iglesias Wide Receiver Oklahoma 4 105 Henry Melton Defensive End Texas 4 119 D.J. Moore Cornerback Vanderbilt 5 140 Johnny Knox Wide Receiver Abilene Christian 5 154 Marcus Freeman Linebacker Ohio State 6 190 Al Afalava Safety Oregon State 7 246 Lance Louis Tight End / Offensive Lineman San Diego State 7 251 Derek Kinder Wide Receiver Pittsburgh 9 picks, the first of which was a guy who jumps out of swimming pools and never did anything. Johnny Knox in the 5th round was decent. Melton and Moore might wind up as solid starters 2008 1 14 Chris Williams OT Vanderbilt 2 44 Matt Forte RB Tulane 3 70 Earl Bennett WR Vanderbilt 3 90 Marcus Harrison DT Arkansas 4 120 Craig Steltz S LSU 5 142 Zack Bowman CB Nebraska 5 158 Kellen Davis TE Michigan State 7 208 Ervin Baldwin DE Michigan State 7 222 Chester Adams OG Georgia 7 243 Joey LaRocque LB Oregon State 7 247 Kirk Barton OT Ohio State 7 248 Marcus Monk WR Arkansas 7 picks in the first 5 rounds. Hit their 2nd rounder out of the ballpark with Forte, but hurt themselves just as much with busted 1st and 3rd rounders in Chris Williams and Earl Bennett. With a total of 12 picks, the Bears hit on one of them. 2007 1 31 Greg Olsen Tight end Miami 2 62 Dan Bazuin Defensive End Central Michigan 3 93 Garrett Wolfe Running back Northern Illinois 3 94 Michael Okwo Linebacker Stanford 4 130 Josh Beekman Guard Boston College 5 167 Kevin Payne Strong Safety Louisiana-Monroe 5 168 Corey Graham Cornerback New Hampshire 7 221 Trumaine McBride Cornerback Ole Miss 7 241 Aaron Brant Offensive Tackle Iowa State 9 picks. Greg Olsen at the end of the 1st round... he fell, they made the right pick. Years later, the Bears give away their only productive receiver for a 3rd rounder. Bears take Garrett Wolfe in the 3rd f***ing round. Wow. Corey Graham in the 5th was ok. 2006 Round Pick Name Position College 2 42 Danieal Manning Safety Abilene Christian 2 57 Devin Hester Cornerback Miami 3 73 Dusty Dvoracek Defensive tackle Oklahoma 4 120 Jamar Williams Linebacker Arizona State 5 159 Mark Anderson Defensive End Alabama 6 195 J.D. Runnels Fullback Oklahoma 6 200 Tyler Reed Guard Penn State Devin Hester in the 3rd round. Obviously a home run. The rest? Daniel Manning was decent.
