QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) They had a HUGE recruiting advantage by not reporting that one of their current and then former coaches was raping little boys. Check out what happens to their recruiting classes now. Covering this up had ALOT to do with keeping the football machine going. As for people saying "dont punish people who had nothing to do with it", just about every NCAA punishment hurts people who had nothing to do with it, my team cant play in a bowl this season because of players and a coach that arent there anymore, I didnt see anyone crying about that. Well the players have a free out. There isn't really a way to correctly punish a program without effecting some innocent players/fans. Just how it is. Your program f***ed up, the program pays for it. If this Paterno thing happened at Illinois it would suck, but I would completely understand the punishment. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:03 PM) There is a difference between taking away past wins and future sanctions. I dont think anyone has a problem with Penn State losing scholarships or post season bans in the future. Its about taking away wins in games that were no way impacted by inappropriate player behavior. Usually some player has done something wrong is the reason for vacating the game (ie they werent eligible due to improper benefit therefore the game doesnt count), but in this case there is 0 evidence any PSU player committed a wrong doing. So take away Paternos victories, but why hurt the players? Strangesox, But in this instance you could have easily not hurt the players. You "suspend Paterno" ex post facto, and take away all the games he won and lost over the last 8 years. The games stay, just Paterno is hurt. It doesnt hurt Penn State as much, but the games really werent impacted, and the future sanctions are to hurt PSU. But this wasn't just Paterno. This was the football program and other people at the university. Taking away the wins from more than Paterno is fine. They, as a whole, covered up a child rapist to help obtain a lot of those wins. They put W's before morals, ethics and the law. Time to correct that. Also, do the former players really give a s*** if their wins were vacated? How does that really hurt them? They know they played, they have the memories...I doubt many of them are in uproar over "their" wins being vacated, but maybe I'm wrong.

At my old job where everyone was salaried (though I'm guessing this is same for hourly) the people who smoked would take 5-6 breaks throughout the day to smoke. At least 5 minutes each. Half hour or so every day. Somehow I feel that it's an accepted practice, like a God-given right for those breaks. But if a non-smoker wants to go screw around 5 minutes every hour, they'd hear about it. Or if they wanted to go home 30 minutes early. They worked the same amount the smokers did. Just a random observation, always found it funny how accepted it was.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 01:32 PM) I dont know, you are trying to disprove my argument, go find the facts yourself. The better question is, in an investigation, did they not interview people who wanted to be interviewed. You've lost all of us. What is the Paterno family going to say, and why is it relevant? Are they going to prove the emails were fake? All the evidence is there. Hearing about him being a great family man doesn't do anything.

Looks like Kane realizes he's being an assclown...or at least he says he does. Sorry, Joecoolman http://espn.go.com/chicago/nhl/story/_/id/...rinking-problem -
QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 12:48 PM) I'm one of the few that think the NCAA was out of bounds here and got caught up in media frenzy/court of public opinion/mob mentality (you choose). I don't agree with the NCAA's actions at all. And I am NOT a Penn St. fan or a Paterno apologist. The football program protected a child rapist for the betterment of their program. One way or another, big punishments were warranted. Also, this quote from the Paterno family: The sanctions announced by the NCAA today defame the legacy and contributions of a great coach and educator without any input from our family or those who knew him best **** No, Joe's actions in regards to all of this was what defamed his legacy and contributions. What should the NCAA have done, listen to Paterno's family talk about how he was a "great guy" when they are holding an FBI report that said he helped cover it up, and not come down with sanctions? I agree strangesox, that didn't make a lot of sense.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:37 AM) With PSU & OSU ineligible, Wisconsin has quite the cakewalk to get into the B1G championship game this season. Their only competition now is Purdue, Indiana & Illinois. Something illegal needs to break at Wisconsin. Also, with PSU and OSU out...finish 2nd in the division (out of everyone else) and you could have a really good shot at a significant bowl game. Please do something with the opportunity. You better beat up on Penn St at home as well. -
Here's the Paterno statement before they make it, they would like to remind you that these sanctions "do not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State community." BTW, way to kick Paterno and family with the vacated wins just for good measure. Good for them.

60 million fine 4 year bowl/postseason ban Reduction from 25 to 15 scholarships per year for 4 years All wins vacated from 1998 to 2011 5 year probation period
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 09:30 PM) That seems like a pretty hefty fine for an athletic dept. Fine them whatever the hell they want. Plus it's a Penn State fine anyway, they'll pull money from wherever. Glad they are getting torn apart for this. The systematic failure deserves a punishment like this, plus bowl/scholarships and whatever else they come up with.

LOL since when is Gatorade bad for you to replenish fluids during some sort of workout or activity?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) Exactly. I went to the movie on Friday night, brought my gun, and sat right by the entrance. Not that I thought anything would happen, but you can't let things like this change the way you live. You normally bring a gun with to the movies?

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/...rsity-crew-site Glad it's down. Go assemble elsewhere, idiots. 2 other things: NCAA to announce sanctions Monday. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/...caa-source-says Another stupid f***ing quote from the Paterno family: The Paterno family issued a statement only hours later saying the statue's removal "does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State community."

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:26 AM) It's one and the same. Movie theaters are a big part of our culture. Opening fire on a packed theater brings the same results as airplane hijackings, suicide bombers, or hostage takers. It makes people wary of going about business as usual because their sense of security has taken a hit. Armed robbery and gang violence typically have a specific target. Unless something comes out saying otherwise, this guy didn't have a specific target in mind. His target was anything breathing that he laid eyes on- just like the shooter in Norway. It doesn't matter who's behind the gun firing and for what reason- it matters that there is a gun being fired to begin with. One is a crazy guy opening up fire where we aren't really sure what the motive is, and it's hard to prepare for. The other is a large group of people that hate an entire country and plan extensive things to try to hurt that country. Sure there are deaths in both. It's just a lot easier to try to fight/prevent/take measures to try to combat terrorism. This happens, there's not a big reason to freak out and change a lot of things. 9/11 happens, there is great reason to change things.

Decision on statue within 72 hours. They'd be incredibly stupid not to take it down, but again, this is Penn St we're talking about. Also, I can't stand hearing the "the statue stands for the good he did" bulls***. NOTHING he did will ever come close to outweighing the fact that he helped contribute to child rape. He will be remembered as someone who protected a child molester to save his precious football program, and rightly so. Nothing he did before that means a damn thing, sorry. This wasn't a one time mistake - this was going on for many years and he just let it continue to go on.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 06:41 PM) Yeah, its annoying and pointless. Minorly annoying considering it only takes a little bit of time. Pointless - I'm sure they've caught someone/deterred someone from bringing in something to an event. Worth it right there.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:34 PM) Why would you be ok living in a police state? Again, what's the big deal with some security entering certain places? You that bothered to get a pat down at a Bears game, or a wand at a concert?
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:14 PM) The entire security landscape has changed in just about every aspect of life. Transportation is just one. Buildings have security, stadiums have security, events are canceled because of security concerns, etc etc. Billions and billions are spent in the name of safety and i'm convinced the vast majority of it is a gigantic waste. It's security theater. I seriously hope we don't go down this path, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if we start seeing metal detectors/security checks at major public places like movie theaters, malls, etc. Just wait, in the next couple of days that'll be the next talking point. Personally I'm fine with going through security to enter a building/airplane/event. I really don't see what the big deal is. Now, whether any of it is that beneficial, that's another argument. Here's the thing about metal detectors - they don't do all that much. Even if a guy enters a theater or school with a gun, the alarm or whatever goes off...everyone's still getting shot seconds later anyway. So yes, I think that would be somewhat of a waste.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 01:52 PM) I really, really hope we as a country don't freak out over this. It's a fluke thing done by a crazy person. No more, no less. This isn't because of Call of Duty, Batman, availability of guns, etc. This was a crazy person that did this. Period. More than a decade after 9/11 i'm still pissed how much we as a society gave up in terms of personal freedoms in everyday life just to feel more safe, when in reality we're not much safer than before. Agreed with the first paragraph. But one crazy guy shooting people in a theater is a lot different that terrorism. Let's not put them on the same level as far as giving up freedoms, which whether you tried to or not, you basically did with the second paragraph. I'm sure your reaction post 9/11 wasn't the same as it is now. But what personal freedoms are you upset you had to give up? Does it deal with airports, or going to events, or...?

20/7 (or 7/20): White Sox @ Detroit... IT'S ON!!!!
IlliniKrush replied to Joxer_Daly's topic in 2012 Season in Review
QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) This is the season as far as I'm concerned. Gotta win 2 of 3. These are the types of games under Ozzie they lost the last few seasons. This needs to be different. Especially after last night, Robin or team leaders need to make a speech pre-game. If this team can't get it up for this series they do not deserve to be in the playoffs. That's it. No, 3 games isn't the season. Important series sure. Get swept and you're 1.5 out in July. Even if we sweep it. Up 4.5, that means you think the division is clinched. In July. And if it's 2-1, 1-2...? -
And now anytime any of us goes to a movie, we'll feel a little bit uneasy and be staring at the exit doors up front. Kind of like a lot of people flying today still get that uneasy feeling and look around and hope no one on there is a terrorist. I'm trying to actually envision sitting in a theater and having someone up fire - you must feel like you aren't in a real world for a few seconds until panic hits and you have to try to survive. Edit: Caught this nugget underneath his photo: James Holmes was a student the University of Colorado Denver's graduate program in neurosciences

Poile's f***ed. Either match it and pay an assload of money, especially up front, or let him walk, and essentially become irrelevant after building a team this year that had a legit chance to contend for the Stanley Cup. Damn. -
Does anyone know a good Thai restaurant downtown?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 09:27 AM) AH, so you are the one person who likes their thai food? I actually like a shack on Taylor called golden thai. It's one my wife gets, that's really the only reason I know it. I'm the furthest thing from a "foodie." There's some other one around here she didn't like - but maybe I'm confusing the one she does like with the one she doesn't. I'll have to tell her about golden thai. -

I just don't see it being fun, it looks incredibly stupid. Holding a broomstick between your legs? OK. I guess if you're a huge Harry Potter fan, you'll do anything to be "part" of it.
