Frank Thomas signs with Oakland Athletics
kevin57 replied to OfficerKarkovice's topic in Pale Hose Talk
You knew it was bound to happen. Most of us knew it had to happen. Still, it is a sad day. Best Wishes, Frank...except when you play the Sox. -
After watching NFC championship....
kevin57 replied to watchtower41's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I was surprised, almost shocked, by how "non-competitive" the championship games were. Blow outs, both. The losing teams did not show much in terms of championship quality play in any aspect of their game. -
I think you've got to count MB as an ace. He's been a solid workhorse year after year. Does he dominate every foe every outing. No...I guess he wouldn't be a Gibson, but he's integral to this team and this staff. As to his signing, don't get too anxious. I think he'll stick around and will be signed.

QUOTE(Irishsox1 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:23 PM) The whole "the Sox are moving to Florida" was brewing for some time, but I always thought a deal would get done. Then I saw that a stadium was being built in Florida, then as the deadline was getting closer, I started to think that the Sox might end up moving. You have to remember that in 1984 the Colts moved to Indy in the middle of the night, so why wouldn't that happen to the Sox. So the deadline was set and when I went to bed that night I thought the Sox were goners. I woke up the next day and my dad told me the good news that the Sox were staying. I was upset with Reinsdorf and the team for being taken hostage, but I got over it when the Sox got off to a great start in 1990. The 1990 team saved me from doing something really stupid and got me back on the right track. Now that I'm older I relize that you have to set deadlines to get deals set. The SF Giants did the same thing in the late '90's and it got them a stadium also. It was a dark time as a Sox fan, but if you can believe it, it was not the lowest. In my opinion the 1994 strike was the lowest. Of all the years to go on strike!!! I believe there is a significant differnce, though. Baseball is protected by the anti-trust exemption which means that teams cannot move without MLB's approval, whereas in Football, the NFL is basically powerless to do anything that an individual owner might decide. Am I right on this?

Ratings aside, yeah, Grossman is a better passer and leader than KO, but those Bear fans who think that Grossman is/will be one of the top, oh, 5 quarterbacks in the NFL need to go into rehab. -
I'm sorry to see these two going. They were enjoyable and knowledgable.

Sad...and ignorant :headshake

Knowing how this town forgot his victories and made Grossman the next Bart Starr, I don't doubt he wanted to get wasted. -
It looks like this is going to civil court. If you were on jury--knowing what you know right now--whom would you hold responsible?

That must have been produced by someone with hyperactivity syndrome.

Very close...all too close.

The coverage in both papers this morning about Ozzie's citizenship was primo

You'll win that bet. Enjoy 'whatever.'

Now that Contreras has his family here, I don't think El Duque will be as missed as he would have been. The Iguchi / Uribe switch should be interesting. I do think Spring Training and the early part of the season will tell the tale of whether that will profit either one or both of them. What would be an interesting problem for Ozzie would be if Iguchi "blossoms" down in the lineup but Uribe is terrible behind Pods.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 19, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) Wow. Just... wow. Didn't you say you were a Priest? Are you really prepared as a representative of a faith to intentionally target the holiest site for all Muslims? Thus indicting the entire religion as being fanatical and dangerous? Maybe we should target Rome because of all the Catholic a**holes out there in the world. How does that sound? Trying to say MAD was a positive thing is like that episode of the Simpsons, where Mr. Burns is only healthy because so many diseases are trying to get him at once that they all get stuck in the door trying to get in. Sure it worked, in a fashion, but is that a chance you are prepared to take? And do you really think that's all that kept us from going to war? GMAFB. Some messenger of peace. :headshake Good military strategy should rarely take anything off the table. Remember how there were those who said that we should not take any military action during Ramadan (while our troops were being fired on from mosques)? Your comparison of these fanatics with "all the Catholic a**holes out there in the world" is comical and absurd. Tell me how many Catholics have used airplanes as missiles. GMFAB

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 11:54 AM) many teams have a whipping boy. There is that one player that always seems to be the target of everyone's ire. For a long time Joe Crede was it for the Sox. I don't know about this. I think this year's (deserved) whipping boy was Marte...and actually I can think of a couple of others whom fans lacerated on a regular basis. Remember, Billy Koch before that? Ouch! Let's not remember him.

No problem. Press "Alt" and the numbers "0241" and voilà.

Page 1 of the Sports section in the Cubune announces that Jimmy Piersall, a fourteen-year baseball contributor at the SCORE, will be cut loose. Of course, the speculation is that Jerry Reinsdorf told the station that will carry the Sox to let him go while WSCR insists no such influence was at work. In the article by Ed Sherman the following commentary was offered: "Quite simply, [Harry Carey and Jimmy Piersall] were the best TV duo ever in this town, or any town." Agree or Disagree?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) Feliz Cumpleanos! Hey, southsider, careful with the ñ. Without that, your message to Ozzie would never make the airwaves. Ozwaldo, ¡feliz cumpleaños!

I know the decision to allow Cuba to participate was made by Uncle Sam, but I wonder if Uncle Bud--seeing more and more players opting out of the WBC--did some lobbying (the favorite US sport) and got this done to infuse some interest in what was quickly becoming a bust.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/sex_relationshi...ngafterpill.htm hope that helps. Thanks for the link, but it leaves moral ambiguity vis-a-vis abortion. It helps prevent the ovaries from producing an egg ( ) but it also prevents a fertilized egg from "embedding" in the uterine wall ( )

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 19, 2006 -> 04:54 PM) Who needs to know who is actually responsible. Just nuke Mecca. Why the green? Just as MAD (mutually insured destruction) was the key strategy in keeping the USA and USSR from blowing each other to bits during the Cold War, maybe only the threat to nuke Mecca would deter these crazies. Unlike the Soviets, they don't care about the lives of their compatriots or any country's survival. Now, their holiest shrine...?

Don't be in a huge rush to sign Contreras...and don't give him a multi-year deal. At his age, it's not worth it. Hopefully, he'll pitch like a madman again, this time throughout 2006. After that, we'll see what the market will bear for him.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 12:28 AM) my next question is whether or not the morning after pill is a "bad" thing. I have to confess (hehe) that I'm not 100% up-to-date on the, what I think are, various forms of "morning after" pills. If such a pill would simply prevent conception (sperm meeting ovum), then 'okay.' If it would prevent implantation (fertilized egg from uterine wall), then not so 'ok.'
