  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 10:07 PM) If the average payroll was $30-40 million, it wouldn't cost as much to go to a game. They charge what they think they can get away with. Beers wouldn't be $7.25. People stopped filling the bleachers at Wrigley so the Cubs started dropping prices for beer and hot dogs. Owners are businessmen. Why would they charge less just because they have lower fixed costs? They would just make even greater profits. EDIT: yeah, what Balta said.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 09:58 PM) No. It probably shouldn't cost someone $200-300 to take their family to a game, but people have been willing to pay it, although I believe the tide is turning. The owners would charge the same amount regardless of how much the players make.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 09:55 PM) Baseball salaries are ridiculous. Alex Rios will be paid more this year than Carlton Fisk made his entire 24 year career. Should the owners just pocket even more money? Because in the end it comes down to players or owners making that extra money.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 09:45 PM) I feel similarly about Greg Walker. Please get him straightened out already... No kidding. It feels like Greg Walker hasn't hit a double in over a decade.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 01:32 AM) That's a decent theory. Teams all around baseball are calling up their young studs now that the 'Super 2' deadline has passed. We've got some of the worst everyday players in baseball taking up space yet we can't find room for one of the top hitters in all the minor leagues. And another thing...why the hell does Lillibridge have 1 PA since he basically won the game last Saturday against the A's? This organization. Oh my goodness. Viciedo has acquired some service time, so wouldn't they have to keep him down longer to avoid the super 2 cutoff?
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 18, 2011 -> 12:16 AM) This has been a helluva outing by Hudson. There's gotta be something personal there for him. Yeah, he personally thinks we suck. Yuk yuk yuk
  7. Way to beat it out Alexei (this is what I'm rooting for now...)
  8. QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 11:06 PM) Great now Jackson settling down gonna result in him being in the rotation leading to a 6 man rotation again Like Peavy won't be hurt within 3 starts..
  9. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 10:54 PM) Based on this reasoning though, hitters should be judged on line-drive rates, park factors, etc. rather than using wOBA as the main component. Hitters are the ones in control of LD rate, it doesn't regress to the mean as much for hitters.
  10. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 10:45 PM) Exactly. WAR should be based on how you are actually are doing not what you should be doing. The theory is that for the most part, pitchers over time can't control anything other than Ks BBs and HRs. The BABIPs will regress, though it may take a full season ro more to do so. There are a handful of exceptions to this, but for the most part it has bee proven correct. Based on this understanding, it does measure what the pitchers are 'actually doing'.
  11. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 10:28 PM) Well, they are actually tied with a 1.7. But as MattZ said, WAR understands BABIP (At least I'm pretty sure). Humber has been good, but he has also been pretty lucky, and his peripherals don't scream "dominance". Not directly, but it's based on FIP, which only looks at Ks, BBs, and HRs.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 10:27 PM) No idea how Jackson handles the bat, but it's safe to assume that Alexei will be batting with 2 outs next inning. Based on no numbers in front of me, I thought he was decent
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 10:26 PM) Any metric that has Jackson higher than Humber this year is bogus to me Or it understands how BABIP works
  14. It's funny, I think there's been more jokes about the impending Hudson-Jackson poopstorm than actual shots taken at Jackson/KW...
  15. Come on. I have zero belief that Jake will be back in any helpful capacity, but giving him a shot in the pen if he comes back is a no lose situation. He clearly can't remain healthy with starter innings, so why not try something new? The money's a sunk cost regardless.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 10:22 AM) Ok, in that case, the 2011-2012 NBA thread is closed. So I guess you could say that we're /puts on sunglasses locked out YEAAAAAAH!!!!
  17. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 14, 2011 -> 12:36 AM) Just let Alexei leadoff. I can believe I live in a world where this makes sense, but here we are. Says a lot about Alexei's improvements, really.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 08:28 PM) Paulie is the best fastball hitter in major league baseball, and thats actually a fact. 4th in 2011 per Fangraphs. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=2011&ind=0 edit: and 1st in 2010 http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=2010&ind=0
  19. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 08:26 PM) That seems impossible. Never at a friend's house, bar, or restaurant all these years? I call bulls***. A lot of bar/restaurants just stretch the standard def image. It makes em want to die.
  20. QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 08:17 PM) bring out the collars and the shorts! I'd settle for juggling and smoking in the dugouts.
  21. QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 10, 2011 -> 08:14 PM) Im diggin the 70's graphics and wipes. Kinda awesome... Wish the Sox were wearing some throwbacks though... Man, with Oakland in throwbacks too... would look nice.
  22. Not to be a total spammer, but if 32,000 people like this by 6/13, the whole set will be on sale for $49.99. http://www.facebook.com/AmazonMoviesTV
  23. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) If his name was Ozney Ramirez would he have been drafted by now? Sure. I love Alexei enough to gift draft his family members.
  24. Is anyone doing a live chat today? I've got a clunker of a summer class to get through in the next 3 hours.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 08:59 AM) That is what I don't get. He is already here, in the major leagues, and contributing. How many players drafted can ever say that? I don't care if they are a DH, if they are doing a job in the majors, they were a good pick. I see your point, but you can't have guys like that be the greatest successes in your system.
