QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 01:43 AM) Would you do a Stacy/Maclin for Fitzgerald/Vereen swap? In a ppr Id do that in a second -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) That was the first thing that I noticed when I watched the video, that the guy recording it and presumably others were directly in the line of fire for a while until the guy with the knife took a wide path to the officers' right. Do we know what information the cops had before they arrived? Did they even know there was someone with a knife or did they just know someone had stolen something? Also did they know exactly who they were looking for as they pulled up?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 11:51 AM) Cops don't get paid well enough to take risks with crazy assholes on the street. I don't particularly care for police officers, to be completely honest. But I certainly don't expect them to mess around with the lunatics they encounter on a daily basis. This is exactly where Im at with all of this. In general I think there a lot of police officers who abuse their power and there is a lot of corruption going on, however in situations like this I think its unfair to criticize the decisions they make when their lives are on the line and someone is coming at them with a deadly weapon. Its easy to draw conclusions when youre on your computer at home watching a video that shows what happened for a couple minutes prior to the police arriving but in reality these guys responded to a complaint and almost immediately upon arriving had someone going straight towards them with a knife in his hand. For all these cops knew this guy could have just stabbed someone in the store they were outside of. They dont have time to assess everything that is going on or determine if the guy coming at them is mentally stable. Tensions have obviously been high in Ferguson for a while now, cops are being shot at, having molotov cocktails thrown at them and there have been several other violent crimes happening every day so if 2 cops feel like their lives or other peoples lives around are in danger and a man is coming at them with a kinfe saying "shoot me" I dont see how deadly force isnt justified. On the other hand, it seems a lot of people are asking why non lethal options werent available and to me this seems more like a discussion on if we should look into changing police procedures and not whether or not these cops did something wrong/illegal. As Milkman said this is just about as cut and dry as you can get and there is no way these guys will get in any sort of trouble for how they handled this as it appeared to be pretty much textbook. Now maybe if it was 2 different cops and they were carrying tasers they could have chosen to subdue the guy non lethally but again thats at the discretion of the cops and contingent on whether or not Ferguson PD are carrying tasers.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 04:51 PM) Welp I guess we should give the police who have demonstrated clear overreaction in multiple instances in this case complete deference despite multiple news crews reporting that nothing was going on in that area. Oh, and the police themselves not trying to justify it by saying that they were warned and that there was something going on in the area, but by saying "uh, we don't know what department fired the tear gas, wasn't us!" http://www.kmov.com/special-coverage-001/R...-270697451.html All of this was at least 5 days ago. With all of this going on I dont really see how what theyre currently doing can be considered overreaction anymore.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) there was no rioting or looting going on at the time of many of the incidents of overreaction. How do you know that? Is it based just off of what the reporters said? How do we know there wasnt a mob heading in the direction of where the Al Jazeera had set up and the police told them to move and they refused? It simply doesnt make sense that the there would be that many police in that area and a news crew setting up for a story if there was nothing going on there. Were likely to never know exactly what went on before that video was recorded but when you keep claiming that the news crews got no warning and were just tear gassed for no reason and saying that there was nothing going on in that area you really have no idea what youre talking about.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) This assumes that their demands and warnings, if they had happened, were legitimate in the first place. Either way, the best defense that the police managed to mount in that case was that "it wasn't us! we don't know who fired it! either way, it definitely wasn't intentional!" http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/local/2014/...r-gas/14042747/ There wasn't anything going on in the area and the police haven't even tried to justify their actions in that case. They've been arresting journalists and protesters, detaining them overnight without any charges. They've dispersed peaceful crowds with tear gas and sound cannons. They've had dozens of deadly weapons pointed at unarmed civilians. Like I said, this isn't even controversial. The state police were brought in because of the overreaction during the first week. If the reports of the police having guns fired at them and molotov cocktails being thrown at them is true than I dont really blame them for being overly cautious. There might be a peaceful group protesting but its not really reasonable to expect the cops to be able to fully know what every mobs intentions are. When there are people going around lawlessly looting stores, shooting at cops, starting fires unfortunately they ruin it for the peaceful protesters. Im all for freedom of the press as well but in this case it seems like a handful of media outlets are going out of their way to fire up the crowds. Then there are also situations like this where a journalist is straight up getting attacked by a mob of looters. Its possible the cops asked them to leave to avoid stuff like this to prevent them from getting hurt and they refused to listen.

Corrupt/abusive police are definitely a huge problem. I always think back to that huge chicago cop who roughed up that small female bartender a few years ago. He didnt even receive jail time for this and the police tried to cover it up. Just to think if someone lays their hand on a cop for whatever reason it is a felony, but theyre not held to the same standard? Because of the nature of their jobs and the power they have I think police should be held to the highest standards and should face more severe penalties when they are violating the laws our tax dollars pay them to protect. Its sad that in this day and age we might need to have police officers on camera anytime they do something but something needs to change.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) I have never at any point said the bolded part, anywhere, but you saw fit to make that judgment (don't bother insulting my intelligence by saying I wasn't included in that statement either). Wtf are you talking about lol. Ive always found you to be a pretty straight shooter and if I preface something by saying Im not directing it at anyone then thats the truth. I didnt even read this whole thread, the thought came to me while listening to two people argue about this over the weekend. Im essentially condemning both sides as well for being close minded so its weird that you got defensive about what I said. I can assure you that I couldnt care less about offending people on the internet and if I want to call someone out for saying something stupid I will. For example my first post genuinely had nothing to do with whatever youve posted in this thread but your reaction to it and use of the term "dont question my intelligence" is indeed stupid.
-
This isnt directed at anyone in this thread, but in general I find it pretty interesting to see peoples stances on situations like this and how hypocritical they can be. It seems one side is saying that cops are bad and arent really willing to consider that even though there are some bad cops that not all of them do things like this. On the other side people are saying everyone protesting is bad because of what theyre hearing and seeing about all the looting going on. Both sides are unfairly lumping a larger group of people together to justify what theyre doing. It will be interesting to see what the 2nd autopsy finds or what other evidence comes out. As of now it looks like the cop should probably be charged with murder and that Michael Brown was a scumbag. As most other people have said barring the officer feeling his life was threatened there is no justification for shooting an unarmed kid, absolutely none. but a lot of choices that Brown made that put him in that position were his own fault. Both Brown and the cop are at fault here. I also hope they can find and arrest some of these looters too. People that will trash local businesses and steal from stores in their community in the name of justice are huge pieces of s***.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 05:40 PM) It's a used vehicle. Feel comfortable dropping 5k, car is a out 15k. First Id talk to your bank and see what kind of rate theyd give you for a 10k autoloan, let them know youd be putting in 5k of your own. Some of the ads you saw around the dealership for 2.2% might be for specific cars or primarily for new cars but it cant hurt to ask. A lot of it is going to come down to how much the dealership is into the car you want for and how long its been on their lot. If you just want to try to get the car quickly I would just talk to a salesman when you go to pick up your car and see what rate you qualify for and what price they would sell the car for, but as ss2k5 said they mostly are just going to try to get you to commit to a payment amount. When you find out what the rate is and if it is more than you hoped/expected see if they will lower the selling price to account for it or look into private financing. They likely wont discount the price of the repairs to your current car since its a completely different department but they might take it into consideration for the price of the new car depending on how much wiggle room they have. They also would probably press you pretty hard for an extended warranty and depending on whether or not you personally prefer buying warranties you might have to account for that in the loan amount.

Is the car you want new or used? . Do you mean you are gonna put 5k down or the car costs 5k?

Bless our Veterans, WTF is Wrong with America??
DrunkBomber replied to greg775's topic in The Filibuster
Im actually in California right now because my dad, who is a Vietnam vet, had been going to the VA out here for months complaining of stomach pains amongst other things and was continually either rescheduled or just had basic tests run on him where they told him he was ok and was probably dehydrated and on Thursday the pain got so bad he called 911 and was taken to a different hospital where they relatively quickly found a golf ball sized tumor in his colon. The surgery to remove it seems to have gone well and were still awaiting the results of the biopsy but it was pretty infuriating to know that the VA essentially hung him out to dry and had he not called 911 he probably would have died waiting for the VA to diagnose and treat him. It gets to the point where they might be better served recommending people go to a regular doctor/hospital to get diagnosed and then returning to the VA or something for the treatment. I dont know if thats even feasible but they need to do something. I probably would never even have given this issue a second thought before this experience but its been a real eye opener. -
Like most of you I have always assumed he will stay in NY. Barring NY somehow getting LeBron over the course of Melo's contract there is no chance he will win anything with the Knicks. He couldnt even make it to the playoffs last year in the east, Pau Gasol isnt going to put you over the hump. Speaking of Gasol, I really dont understand why were even after him. We have Noah, Taj, Mirotic and McBuckets to a degree for the 4/5, we really need a 2/3 so I dont really see how Gasol would fit in with the Bulls plan.

QUOTE (juddling @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) Was looking for a new show to start watching......I watched the series premeire of Oz. Considering the content I will probably not be able to watch much during the summer with the little one home but I had to admit I was surprised at how many actors I recognized. In just the first episode I saw 2 current insurance pitchmen, Walt's dad from Lost, LaGuerta from Dexter (looking hot I might add), Chief Bowden from Chicago Fire and of course Mr. Ghostbuster himself.....Ernie Hudson. i can only imagine there will be more.....just might take me forever to get to them...... Oz was a pretty good show. My main complaint was that it had an excessive amount of the wrong kind of nudity. If you watch either Law and Order SVU or Criminal Intent you will notice a ridiculous amount of the same actors as Oz.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) I despise Lance Stevenson. The Spurs for the most part share the basketball beautifully. But against the Heat they will do no better than the Pacers. If the Spurs were truly playing with a chip on their shoulder after last year, they wouldn't have given up home court. They sucked in crunch time. Like I said LeBron was great, the defense got turned up the last five minutes and Bosh hit the big shot. The Spurs looked like a normal team. They've been de-clawed. This series is over. I stand by my pick. Two easy Heat wins in Miami; Spurs probably win Game Five but I wouldn't discount the Heat there. But Heat likely wrap it up in Game Six. LeBron is special. Wade is very good. Bosh is a big timer. Heat in five or six.
