Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?
DrunkBomber replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 06:41 PM) Just false and hyperbolic. Well most people in the buster follow politics at least mildly so we have heard about Rezco to some extent, especially us living in Chicago. However, there has been more coverage of Bristol Palin from the MSM the past three days than there has been about Rezco in 19 months. Theres no doubt that there are significantly more people that dont follow politics that know that she is pregnant that probably have no idea who Tony Rezco is or why he is going to jail. -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) Well yeah, it was shady. Obama apparently never actually did anything illegal or below-board, and nothing came out from Rezko about Obama during the trial (but damn did Blago ever look like s*** after that), but Obama did acknowledge he made a mistake and that he should've known better. That's about all we know for now. But I mean, frankly, with politicians these kinds of associations are a dime a dozen, and I would believe that literally everyone has a shady association somewhere, even the "clean" ones. I agree for the most part that politicians all have skeletons in their closet, I just honestly think that out of the 4 Palin definitely has by far the least. Also, I continue to bring up this stuff about Obama because it shows he is exactly the opposite of the platform he is campaigning on, which is different.

Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?

Weve learned more about Bristol Palin in 3 days than we have Tony Rezco in 19 months... -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) The story kind of started to die off after those stories came out, because once the extent of it became known, there wasn't that much else to speculate about. I dunno. I think theres a lot more there and Im surprised not much is known about it. This is only from Wiki but it has some very interesting tidbits : Antoin "Tony" Rezko (born 1955 in Aleppo, Syria) is an American political fundraiser, restaurateur, and real estate developer in Chicago, Illinois convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery in 2008. Rezko has been involved in fundraising for local Illinois Democratic and Republican politicians since the 1980s. He focused primarily on Chicago-area Democrats; for example, Rezko was one of Barack Obama's first major financial contributors. After becoming a major contributor to Rod Blagojevich's successful gubernatorial election, Rezko assisted Blagojevich in setting up the state's first Democratic administration in 20 years. Rezko was able to have business associates appointed onto several state boards. Rezko and several others were indicted on federal charges in October 2006, for using their connections to the state boards to demand kickbacks from businesses that wanted to do business with the state. While the others plead guilty to the charges, Rezko pled not guilty and was found guilty of 16 of the 24 charges filed against him. So, Obama got his house at a huge discount while Rezco bought the land for full price, and then Rezco sold Obama some of the land and were to think a guy like Rezco did this out of the goodness of his heart? It was proven that Rezco had "business associates" appointed onto state boards because of his "fundraising" and were to think that he got nothing in return from Obama? Is this the "change" we can expect, because all it seems to me is more of the same. I know Im biased and/or wrong about a lot of things but there is no way that anyone can believe something really shady was going on here.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
DrunkBomber replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 03:56 PM) Have the words "Mainstream Media" become cliched yet? If not, when will they? Seriously, everybody b****es constantly about the media this and the media that. Unless they are blatantly irresponsible just the shut the hell up about it. Not everyone is b****ing about it because half the country is reaping the benefits. I know myself, and a few others on here will absolutely contest it is blatant irresponsibility, especially in an election of this magnitude. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) For what it's worth, you're wrong. The Obama Campaign actually dealt with this about as well as they could. To try to make sure you can't truthfully say exactly what you just said, Obama sat down back in March with the Sun Times for 80 minutes and the Tribune for 90 minutes (the 2 papers in the country that quite frankly would know all the details of the story). Thanks for posting that. Ive never seen those interviews, which is actually still kind of my point. Im surprised those stories didnt get more attention. However, what I gather from the interview is that the corruption in the transaction that people like me suspected absolutely happened. Its kind of bothersome to think he is basically admitting to getting into shady business transactions with a convicted felon and that not only did it not gain national attention, but that nobody seems to care. Is this honestly less of a deal than Palins husband getting a DUI 20 years ago or the personal life of her daughter, becuase I know everybody knows about that stuff.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 02:06 PM) Personally I'd rather them track down the real Tony Rezko story, but that is just me. Hearing the Justice Department might be quietly interviewing him brings my hopes up. During his 19 months of campaigning I can only recall Obama being asked about Rezco and his role in the purchase of his house once. Obama said, its a coincidence and that he may have mentioned the developers name to Tony in passing and that was all that there is to it. Now, I know libs will say its beating a dead horse, but that is irresponsible journalism. I know more about whats going on with a VP candidate of less than a weeks 17 year old daughter than I do about this. Since the media has such a hard on for Obama he never has to answer the tough questions. If theres anyone that thinks that there wasnt more to that real estate transaction than mentioning the developers name in passing I would like to hear about it. Also, if someone hasnt heard the story behind that deal, which would surprise me, I would be happy to elaborate and theres no way thats all that there was to it. Then, when we think we have Obama in a position to answer the tough questions, "That question is above my pay grade" I mean seriously, this guy is running for President, is it too much to ask for him to have at least one interview where he is asked the tough questions and has to answer them? McCain aside, its insane that Obama has gone this long without having to address the Rezco situation, his relationship with Ayers etc.

I guess its fair game to say whatever you want if it was a quote from a movie.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 31, 2008 -> 10:43 AM) I really don't care... VP's are overrated. In terms of what? Generating votes or running the senate?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) So how do you react to the state trooper firing deal? The question is above my pay grade Im reserving my judgment on it until more conclusive facts come out. I think her response to the allegations warrants that at least.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) Democracy wont work unless we viciously attack each other until vultues pick at our rotting corpses. My take on Palin. Im a huge fan of the pick and I think it is going to go a long way with winning McCain the election. Im not going to debate experience because it can start and stop with Palin and Obama dont have enough for the other parties liking. I think she will get at least 20% of the exiled Hillary supporters which is huge. She will keep the right wing conservatives because of her views of gun laws, gay marriage and abortion. She has union ties which will help a lot in the swing states as well. The main thing I like about her is her attempt to stop corruption. Experience or not, having a political newcomer that is willing to take on the heads of her party in her state based on morality issues is a breath of fresh air. I would love to see what she can do running the senate. I also like that she came through on her campaign promises of lowering her salary and lowering property taxes 60%. She is also for drilling but is anti big oil which is something I think a lot of people should like.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) Were just putting it off because there's bound to be a clash between a Libertarian (or at least thats what I think DrunkBomber is) and a Socialist if they're within such close proximity. But please, in the future dont bring communism into the discussion at all. You wouldn't call Norway or Sweden communist countries would you? I would probably classify myself as a libertarian. Im not going to criticize anyone elses views though, I was just explaining mine.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 07:46 PM) Cool, so you want the government to take care of your every need? How awesome.ya, I dont get that either...

Well, I will be very blunt. This for sure is going to get me flamed but its the truth and I suspect Im not alone but a lot of people would never admit it. I dont care about the little guy. I dont care about homeless people, poverty or basically anything that doesnt effect me. I dont care about minimum wage or think its a problem. Its my opinion that ANYONE can arm themselves with at least some kind of skill set to make themselves more than minimum wage. I dont have health insurance and I was in a terrible car accident in 05 and am lucky to be alive. The hospital bills were nearly 100k and it basically took, loans, cleaning out every penny I had saved in my life and destroying my credit to work it out finally. Never would I expect anyone else to be responsible for that tab. I think if people want health care they should get it or deal with the consequences like I had to. Everybody has the right to health care, but nobody is entitled to it. Immigration. I think any employer who gets caught with illegal immigrants as employees should be ridiculously fined the first time, and if it happens again he should lose his business. I dont think we should have any tolerance to allowing people to come to this country illegally and then giving them immunity. Then, if immigrants want to move here but dont want to wait, they can join the military and perform a service to the country and then receive the benefits of everyone else. We should be drilling here, hands down, and try to limit our dependence on other countries as much as possible. We NEVER should have went to Iraq. Too many lives were lost and too much money is being spent on it. After 9/11, we should have torn Afghanistan apart until we took down Bin Laden and called it one. My biggest driving factor is corruption. It makes me sick and Im tired of being held to higher standards than police and elected officials. This is why I really like the Palin pick because of her efforts in cleaning up Alaskas politicians, even in her own party. If the government wants to use new technology to know our every move, we should get to use it to know theirs. Gay marriage and abortion arent issues to me. Im not religious at all. If two people love each other they should be allowed to get married. I personally would never get an abortion unless it was out of my hands but I dont think anyone has the right to tell a woman what she can do with her body. I am really against the later stage abortions though and think they need to regulate time limits. I dont think I need to touch on social programs. However, I will add, that I think ALL the money for public schools should come from within its own community. If you want to go to a different school, move.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) Never gotten beat up. One dude took a swing at me but I ducked it and he was grabbed and dragged away. I'm 6'4, 230, so not a lot of people pick fights with me. I'm laid back and quiet as well. Ya, theres a big difference between not going out and picking useless fights and standing up for yourself, which clearly wasnt laid out in the thread.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 07:16 PM) My bad. You have a better record then Foreman, Ali, Tyson, and every other fighter. Undefeated. Amazing to always be at your best. Seriously, grow up. Tracking me across other threads to try and goat me is a little juvenile. Being an admin and my elder, maybe use try the whole, if you have nothing nice to say rule should be used sometimes. Its pathetic and you seem desperate to annoy me and like a loser. Its a message board man, maybe you need to let some things slide. You dont see me chasing around people in other threads because I dont like them and taking jabs at them with blatant sarcasm so why are you doing it to me? If you have a problem with what Im saying or want to try and use (what you no doubtidly are and say youre two posts in here werent meant to be insults then please address be by PM. Theres no reason to go back and forth like this in threads. Something tells me Ill get the standard sarcastic quip with the LOL smiley but seriously, youre an admin, if you need to say anything to me just do it by PM.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 08:55 AM) Ah the wisdom to back down at times, wish I had it. lol at this. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 10:19 PM) Before we get too far off subject, are you saying that speeding is a victimless crime? That humans working around the clock isn't too far, but a $45,000 machine is too far? Speeding is very circumstantial. It can be a victimless crime, but it can also cause an accident. If theres no traffic around and you go 10 over, than yes its a victimless crime, IMO. If you hit someone, then no, it isnt. Running the metra doesnt mean people are working 24 hours a day. They have shifts. The El runs 24 hours a day. Drunk driving kills a lot of people, if they are so concerned about the well being of people, why not run the train a few times after midnight on weekends so people in the suburbs dont drive drunk. IMO, they dont because of the revenue they get from the arrests. Im honestly fed up with a lot of the politics in the whole country at this point and I think a lot of changes need to be made. I dont like when people like Blago/Pelosi or whomever tell me I need to do this, and then they go and do that. I think our elected officials need to be held to the same standards as the people who vote for them. Without justifying ANY crimes and saying theyre ok, which Im not doing, I just dont like the idea of cameras governing things. There are a lot bigger problems that should be given attention than speeding. Basically, Im looking for a Utopian system of government, where people in a position of power and authority are responsible for their actions, and where if they commit crimes, they are held to the same standards the citizens are. I think cops should all have those dashboard cameras and be miked up at all times while they are on duty. Id like to know where every penny of a governors budget is allocated. Id like the opportunity to ask "Whats going on?" when theres something I dont understand or agree with and get an answer. I know it will never happen, I just think things like cameras enforcing crimes is going to make everything worse than better.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) BTW DB Wouldn't it be hilarious if over Christmas I get caught by one of thsoe cameras and be 1,500 miles away in Texas when I get the ticket That would prove karma is a b**** I truly hope you weren't really upset over this. Nothing like an occassional dust up to keep the typing fingers flying. Not after everything was cleared up. Im glad lostfan mediated a little because we werent seeing eye to eye on my stance. Now that we are we can go back to disagreeing on it. The whole camera thing to me is going too far. Im not trying to justify violating crimes but I just think that if they are victimless crimes than its a waste of time to go this far trying to enforce them. If they were that concerned about the well being of people than they would do things like have the metra run between the suburbs and the city 24 hours on weekends to prevent dui crashes. This is just a way for Blago to raise money for whatever bs hes into now.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 07:07 PM) I wouldn't name one specific friend who would leave me out to dry like that since I would hope I knew them all better than that, but I have been shafted by my friends before. There also could be circumstances where they didnt even know they got a ticket. If they are ticketing for going 10 over, a lot of people will try to go right around there and could accidentally go 11 over or just might not pay attention for a second and get ticketed. I think anytime a ticket is issued there should be a human writing it just because of all the different circumstances that could arise. What it someones pregnant or something like that.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 06:59 PM) DB here is the problem, there are three seperate issues here. Issue 1: Enforcing Speed Laws. I say yes. Don't want to pay a fine? Do not speed. Issue 2: Camera Systems. In specific areas, (work zone) for specific reasons, (existing speeding problem) I am in favor. All the arguments you bring up are the same ones that were brought up regarding radar. Issue 3: Your corrupt governor's new programs. I only recently made a statement, and I do not think it is a good idea. I really dislike the sound of special police force. Even with a honest governor. But to take part three and use it to say part 1 or 2 is wrong, uses faulty logic. Each should be debated on it's own merits. 1 I agree with you 100% on. Like I tried to say, I dont go around speeding so Im not concerned about the repercussions. I never said I disagree with speeding laws. 2 This is a big problem for me because of the potential flaws. I tie this to point number 3 because I dont think any other governor, anywhere for that matter, would ever propose this. As Lostfan reiterated, I think its being proposed to give Blago more money to play with instead of for public safety and Ive had enough of Blago where this really upsets me. The question about if the proposal came from someone other than Blago would I not have a problem with it is interesting. I think i can some it up by saying, I would never like the system and he is just the icing on the cake.
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 16, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) He is concerned about the potential margin for error which he sees as avoidable and also the fact that the real motivation for it is a revenue stream for Blagojevich, and not about actual public safety (similar to DC's red light camera system which is an absolute mess) Or something like that... he's said it several times now Exactly 100% correct.
