  1. Nice job by Contreras. I might just start liking him again.
  2. Charlotte lost 8-1. Egbert (0-1, 6.19) was rocked for 6 runs in 5 innings. Brad Eldred: 3-4, R, 2B I missed this: Ray King is on the Charlotte roster. He pitched 1 inning, allowed 1 hit and fanned 1. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...ox&did=milb Birmingham lost 4-3 as Derek Rodriguez (4-1, 2.57) suffered his first loss. Cook and Armstrong homered. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...biraax_monaax_1 The Barons won the nightcap 9-5. Nanita hit 2 homers and had 5 rbi. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...biraax_monaax_2 Winston-Salem lost 10-4. 3. Yikes. Toby Hall has the best BA of today's White Sox starters.
  4. In 1973 Willie Mays made the All Star team. It was his last season. He was old and not productive. That was the first time, that I recall anyway, of a great player going to the All Star game in the twilight of his career when he really didn't deserve it based on his current stats. I didn't agree with it then, and I still don't. It's happened plenty of times since, especially with the fans voting but I just don't like it. The All Star game should be for current all stars, not for stars well past their prime.
  5. Charlotte lost 5-1 as Ohka drops to 0-6, 6.03. Getz (.289): 2-4, 2 2B Owens (.256): 0-4, BB, SB(9) Russell: 2 IP, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...chraaa_swbaaa_1 Birmingham lost a slugfest 16-10...ouch! Negron, Nanita and Cook all had 3 hits. Cook, Collaro, Hudson and Armstrong all homered. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...biraax_monaax_1 Winston-Salem lost 10-2. Salvador Sanchez and Francisco Hernandez homered for the Warthogs. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...wswafa_lynafa_1
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ May 2, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) If he played for Chicago, he counts. I didn't exactly look at it like that. I took into account longjevity with a Chicago team with the exception of Dick Allen, who had perhaps a couple of his best years while he was with the Sox. Seaver was pretty good with the Sox but not great. Taking into account some greats that played only a little with a Chicago team just gets too confusing. Rocky Colavito, Ken Boyer, Steve Carlton, just to name a few, were some guys who had really good careers but only played briefly with the Sox. Going way back, Al Simmons is a Hall of Famer but only played a couple of years with the Sox. There's probably lots of guys who played for a brief time with the Sox, Cubs, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks. I just can't think of any at the moment.
  7. I like both Maxwell and Mabee, especially Mabee. I think he's get closer potential. I hope both these guys continue to do well and maybe move up to Winston-Salem at the some point later this season and see how they handle the higher A level. This Sierra guy at ss seems to be off to a decent start. I see he came from the DSL. Don't know anything about him. But he's only 20 and hopefully a good prospect. Looking at his numbers and BB/SO ratio it looks pretty good for a young kid.
  8. I think Masset did ok. He kept us in the game. It was winnable, just didn't happen. For a spot start he did an alright job.
  9. Cubs will win the World Series this year. Book it.
  10. I saw him play last year when he was with Great Falls. I like him. He hits.
  11. Knight, I have to agree that this was without a doubt the coolest thing on Soxtalk since maybe The Rally Crede. By the way, the Rally Crede's #1 was Animal House, so he's happy. It was very cool that you elaborated on each selection and didn't just mention the 1 through 50. That was neat. I'm looking forward to the next list.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 25, 2008 -> 11:43 AM) I think much of the reason Blazing Saddles wasn't ranked higher is something SS2k got at...most people that didn't have it listed just haven't seen it. I have no other explanation quite frankly. Either that or Animal House are the funniest movies I've ever seen, but it's probably a coin flip. I haven't seen Young Frankenstein, so there's why I don't know that one. I'll have to check that out sometime. Young Frankenstein is funny no matter what, but it helps if you're familiar with the old Universal horror movies like Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, etc.
  13. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Apr 25, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) Since there's a lull in the list here and we were discussing bad movies a few pages back, let me throw a question at you guys. What do you think is the worst "legitimate" movie you have seen? What I mean is this, OK, it's easy to rip apart Manos and Orgy of the Dead, God knows I have spent countless 'bad movie nights' with my friends doing the same, but Hollywood has made some legitimate busts too. any of you have a film that falls in this category? Would "Showgirls" fall into a legitimate movie category? That was a mighty bad movie. I can also think of a LOT of movie sequels that should never have seen the light of day. Probably the worst sequel to a good movie would be any of the Jaws sequels. If Blues Brothers 2000 could be considered a sequel or for that matter a legitimate movie that would rank real high on the bad movie list, too.
  14. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 09:11 PM) I've seen that. Nothing EVER happens. Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 are watchable for their schlock brilliance. The Ed Wood film that had me mesmerized when i saw it was Orgy of the Dead. made in the 60s. It was basically a bunch of strippers dressed up in devil costumes and jungle queen wardrobes and doing their normal stripper routine while a becaped Crisswell (the psychic guy played by Bill Murry in the Burton film) watched on in mild bemusement from a throne. Has to be seen to be believed. Oh man, Orgy of the Dead is great! I own most of his movies but not that one.
  15. I love Ed Wood movies. They're all atrocious but fun to watch. Another non-Ed Wood movie that's really bad but an all-time favorite of mine is The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!?. A must see if you like bad movies, because they don't come much worse.
  16. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 09:53 PM) Is Dr Strangelove seriously the "funniest" movie you've ever seen or is it just the best movie you've ever seen that's categorized as a comedy? True enough. As I made out my list I pretty much forgot it was "funniest" movies and not "best comedy" because there is a difference. For the record Duck Soup is the funniest movie I ever saw, but that was from way before 1958.
  17. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 09:44 PM) That's exactly how I feel about 2 Peter Sellers movies, Dr. Strangelove and Being There. Both are excellent films but neither has me laughing uncontrollably (especially Being There) yet they always appear on these "funniest movies" lists. George C. Scott is historical in Strangelove but the storyline isn't particularly humorous in and of itself. I actually think Dr. Strangelove is pretty darn funny in an absurd kind of way. Someone mentioned Fargo and I considered it for my list but it wasn't really that funny...way too dark, but definitely an excellent movie. For the record, since I'll be exposed anyway, Dr. Strangelove was #1 on my list. I can't believe a few movies that I forgot about, namely Home Alone, Dumb and Dumber and The Pink Panther. Oh well. None would have been number one but they probably would have made the list, pushing out my last 3. I also felt stupid to find out that my list only had 19 movies. I think I must have been tired.
  18. It's easily Boston's fans for me with a special *nod* to Cubbie fans everywhere.
  19. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) I luv Kingpin...can't remember if I forgot to put it on my list... I've never seen Kingpin. One cool aspect of this listing is just that...to make aware of something ya didn't know about. I'm gonna have to rent Kingpin.
  20. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 09:32 AM) 249 HRs for Valentin surprised me. That he's sandwiched in between some all-time greats like Goose Goslin and Robin Yount is kinda weird for sure. The all-time HR list ain't what it used to be.
  21. You forgot Roy Sievers and Greg Luzinski though it's ok with me not to include Santo and Sosa.
  22. QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) Preview of next month's topic. "Top 20 favorite Chicago Athletes" Oh, I like it! I'm already thinking.
