QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 06:40 PM) Dammit! That picture scares the s*** outta me every time someone sneaks it into a thread. That picture is cool enough that it should be in every thread.

In my lifetime, the only guy who could compare to Frank was Dick Allen and that was what? Only two years. Fox and Aparicio were great but not like Big Hurt type-great. It's too bad none of us ever saw Eddie Collins or Luke Appling play. But even if we had there is no comparison to what Frank did for those first seven or so years. In all of baseball history, only a handful of guys can compare so as an all-time White Sox, Frank is an easy numero uno.

QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) Nanita continues his hot hitting for the Barons. 3-4 raising his average to .339 What's gotten into this guy? Logan Johnson with 2 hits raising his average to .340 Isn't this Nanita's third season at Birmingham? It would seem he's destined for this years Leo Daigle award. Regarding Logan Johnson, thank goodness for Kanny he's hitting like he is because the rest of the team has been pretty slow out of the gate. Gallagher is coming around, I think he'll be alright and hopefully Martinez too.

HELL YEAH!! John Danks was masterful. Great to see. Big game from Thome is all that more important without Konerko in the lineup. A win that features a triple by Dye and a steal of third by Uribe is fun times.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 11:26 AM) Do you hang out, or do you know him as that you saw him at the park and he signed your baseball. I think he meant he knows him (the Juan Uribe fan club). -

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) Impressive at bat for Uribe. He took a lot of good pitches to earn the walk. AND....his .217 OBP just skyrocketed. -
Frank Thomas Released By The Blue Jays/signed by the A's
BigEdWalsh replied to BlizzardOfOzzie's topic in The Diamond Club
This is sad to see. I hope he winds up somewhere (in the majors and not the Newark Bears). Like WSoxMatt said, Thomas is a slow starter. He could heat it up and start pounding the ball. I'll be shocked if some one doesn't take a chance on him. -
QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 10:25 PM) The Sox and their 4 minor league teams combined for a total of 4 runs tonight??? Yeah, and 3 of those were Winston-Salem, meaning the Sox, Charlotte, Birmingham and Kannapolis combined for ONE run. Not a good day.

QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 08:46 AM) I'd rather bat with 8 people than bench Thome and play Owens. In my mind Owens is already wearing another team's colors. When I think of 2007, a few things come to mind. -Owens -Andy Gonzalez If he develops into *anything*, then congrats, pat on the back, etc. I don't wish failure upon him, he just needs to go to some bufu team on the west coast in the NL and stay away. Gonzalez, Terrero and Owens in the same lineup. It literally gives me a bad feeling in my stomach to think about that. Jerry Owens hitting a 250 foot shot Jerry Owens career slugging % Anything more than a dribbler down the middle of the infield which isn't gloved cause the defenders were playing him wrong and he will have beaten the odds IMO. I think our offense would be better served if we just planted a tree in the batters box instead of having him bat. Quitting baseball and doing track instead would be a solid career move. Lemme see if I got this straight. You don't think much of Jerry Owens, is that right?

What teams do you pledge allegiance to?
BigEdWalsh replied to shipps's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
In order... 1. White Sox 2. Bulls 3. Bears 4. Black Hawks 5. Illinois basketball 6. DePaul 7. Loyola I'm old enough to remember the Chicago Packers/Zephyrs. When they moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Bullets I stayed a fan, up until the Bulls came along. Now that I've lived in Utah for nearly three years I've become somewhat of a Salt Lake Bees fan (Angels AAA affiliate). My son went to the University of Utah and I became a fan of the Utes. Out here the rivalry between the Utes and the BYU Cougars is pretty intense. You either like one or the other. I live only a few miles from BYU so I'm in Cougar territory. Nearly every one I know went to BYU, yet I like the Utes. It's at least a friendlier rivalry than that of any of the Chicago rivalries. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) Because the hatred and disrespect between Cubs/Sox fans are higher than that of Bears/packers fans, which is why its worse to cheer for them both. There probably isnt a more sterotyped, social-economic, hatred driven, rivalry for chicago sports fans than Cubs/Sox, which is why is worse to cheer for them both. This is precisely the way that I feel. I grew up in the 1950's. The NFL at least to me as a little kid was not what it is today. Baseball was king back then. Every kid played baseball. Every kid collected baseball cards. I've hated the Cubs for as long as I can remember. There's no comparison. I admit that I'm somewhat of a fair weather football fan. That is to say I don't have the same passion for the Bears as I do for the White Sox. Admittedly, I live and breathe White Sox baseball. I don't have the same feeling about the Bears and I love the Bears. It just isn't the same.

Man, the pitching has been amazing. The stat that blows my mind is only 4 homers allowed so far.

Birmingham won 2-1 in 13 innings. Cassel had started and allowed just an unearned run in 6 inn. Zaleski and Lujan each pitched 2 scoreless innings and Derek Rodriguez pitched 3, striking out 6 to gain the win. Bottom of the 13th: * Victor Mercedes walks. * With Miguel Negron batting, Victor Mercedes caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Jose Camarena to shortstop Diory Hernandez. * Miguel Negron singles on a fly ball to center fielder Matt Young. * David Cook singles on a fly ball to right fielder Mark Jurich. Miguel Negron to 3rd. * Ricardo Nanita singles on a fly ball to center fielder Matt Young. Miguel Negron scores. Winston-Salem won 4-3. Rasner pitched 6 very solid innings for the win. Lang: 1-4, rbi Shelby: 1-2, R Francisco Hernandez: 2-3, 2B, R, 2 rbi Kannapolis won 6-5. Santo Luis pitched 5 innings in relief of Socolovich to get the win. Mabee pitched 2 scoreless innings to get his 2nd Save. Jose Martinez: 2-4, 2 rbi Danny Jordan: 1-4, 2 run homer Paiml: 2-2, R, BB

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 09:50 AM) He threw a cup on the field after the inning ended. I bet that is what the suspension is for. It was a gatorade cup, so it is pretty weak. Rather! This is ridiculous, but he needed a day off any way. That umpire, I forget his name should be suspended too, just because.

Well, we did use to call him Stone Hands.

This blows. I have a night off. I was looking forward to watching the game and I can't. Not at all happy. GRRRRRR! -
After Frank retires I'd like to think that the Sox could have a Frank Thomas day. There could be the official retiring of #35 and the unveiling of his statue, plus a bunch of festivities where he's lavished with gifts. It would be neat to have former teammates and buddies all present. Guys like McDowell, Ventura, Bo Jackson (I don't know what former players Frank might have been real close to). Frank is pretty much Mr. White Sox and deserves all this.
