White Sox acquire Jim Thome per ESPNnews
RME JICO replied to Punch and Judy Garland's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 06:46 PM) Without looking at the numbers, I'm almost certain the Sox cannot afford both Pierre and Konerko. Depending how exactly the $22 Million will be broken out per year, the Sox would only increase their current team salary by abour $4-5 Million for the Thome trade, Konerko resigning @ 4/52, and some sort of Pierre trade. Thome's contract: 2006 - $12.5 Million (-6.5 Phils) $6 Million 2007 - $14.0 Million (-6.5 Phils) $7.5 Million 2008 - $14.0 Million (-6.5 Phils) $7.5 Million Phis also pay 2.5 Million signing bonus due to Thome (total= $22 Mill) Savings in 2006 from lost salaries: Frank Thomas - $8 million Carl Everett - $4 million Aaron Rowand - $3.25 million Total - $15.25 million 2006 Costs Jim Thome $6 million Frank Thomas buyout $3.5 million Carl Everett buyout $0.5 million Total $10 million Available money from moves - $5.25 million Paulie's last salary: $8.75 million Estimated salary: $13.0 million (4/52) Difference: $4.25 million Remaining cash: $1 million Pierre's 2006 salary: $5 million Marte's 2006 salary: $2.25 million If the Sox add Pierre and lose Marte, with the remaining million left over, there would only be a $1.75 million increase! -
QUOTE(phillychuck @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 11:53 AM) I'd like to thank all you guys for posting over at philliesphans. It's great to hear what intelligent fans of other teams think about trades. No trolls at all, my compliments to the quality of your posters. I think the folks who call it a portential win-win where nether GM gave up anything he couldn't replace are right on the mark. It will be very interesting for us to see if Rowand gets flipped for quality starting pitching, which we could use, or if Michaels or Victorino hits the road. Many of us would be happy rotating five outfielders (Abreu, Burrell, Rowand, Victorino, Michaels) if one of them could help take RH first-base ABs. Thanks again, and keep stopping by! The same goes to you and the other Philly Faithful that have posted here. It is nice to get the insights from another perspective, and you all have surely provided that. I agree that this was a great move for both teams. Each team had areas were they had replaceable players with depth and youth. I too am wondering if the Phils will flip Rowand or move Michaels. This trade is only the beginning of an exciting off season for both teams.

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 11:53 AM) This World Series DVD is pretty good! Damn, I have to wait until the 29th to see it.

I hope all that tryptophan puts you to sleep, and you can dream of Thome mashing homers at the Cell on opening day against the hopeless Indians.
-
He will probably retire, then he will come out of retirement to play the 2nd half of the season for the Sox.

There is no way that KW does this deal without having some kind of idea on Thome's health. From the articles that I have read, it says that the Phillies trainer has said that Jim has been in an aggressive rehab regimen since his surgery and is in the best shape he has been in for years. He is only going to play DH, and maybe a couple of games at 1B to spell Paulie. He is not going to be the Jim Thome of the 1990's, but in the Cell he can easily put up numbers comparable to Paulie's 2005 (40HR/100RBI).

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 10:18 AM) http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=cws In your scenario, the Sox would only pay a total of $18.6 million for Thome. The Sox are also paying for $2 million of Thome's signing bonus due in 2006 and they would also have to pick up his $3 million buyout in 2009. Otherwise, Thome has a $13 million team option for 2009. That brings the total to $24.1 million paid by the Sox. Here are Thome's contract details: The signing bonuses are not included in the actual player salaries, so I did not include that. I also did not include the Buyout in 2009, because I was only looking at the next 3 years. So if you include that $5 million it would bring my total to $23.6 because I rounded off at the first decimal. If I brought it out to the third, it would have been $23.9 or $24 million. -

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) In all honesty, I think they may have to issue hardhats in the Bullpen Sports Bar this season. I love this one! QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) Oh, by the way, the White Sox will be paying roughy $7M per for Thome. Nice, huh? Thome's salaries will be more like this: 2006 - $12.5 Million (-7.3 Phils) = Sox Pay $5.2 Million 2007 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) = Sox Pay $6.7 Million 2008 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) = Sox Pay $6.7 Million -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 09:48 AM) I believe that is incorrect. The FA part, I mean. "The Associated Press reports the Chicago White Sox signed OF Aaron Rowand to a two-year, $5.25 million contract Friday, Jan. 14, avoiding arbitration. Rowand will earn $2 million in 2005 and $3.25 million in 2006. Additionally, he holds a player option for 2007 at $3.25 million. If he declines it, the White Sox can exercise a $5 million option." Only a Player Option for 2007.
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 09:43 AM) From the lnik above: Class. Pure class. Fare thee well Aaron. A total Class Act. He can also be a FA after 2006. Maybe the Sox can pick him up next offseason.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) uh oh, Mariotti likes the Thome trade. i'm worried now. He will hate it when Thome strikeouts, and love it when Thome hits GW HR's. Mariotti being Mariotti -
I didn't see this posted, but here is a nice article about Rowand: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=cws

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 03:05 AM) We aren't paying $8 million to Frank, $4 million to Everett, and $3.25 million to Rowand. That's $15.25 million. Thome will make around $8 million and Brian Anderson will make the minimum. Actually, the Sox are doing way better, consider the following: Thome's contract: 2006 - $12.5 Million (-7.3 Phils) = Sox pay $5.2 Million 2007 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) = Sox pay $6.7 Million 2008 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) = Sox pay $6.7 Million Savings in 2006 from lost salaries: Frank Thomas - $8 million Carl Everett - $4 million Aaron Rowand - $3.25 million Total - $15.25 million 2006 Costs Jim Thome $5.2 million Frank Thomas buyout $3.5 million Carl Everett buyout $0.5 million Total $9.2 million Available money from moves - $6.05 million Paulie's last salary: $8.75 million Estimated salary: $12.0 million Difference: +$3.25 million Remaining cash: $2.80 million That leaves $2.8 million to replace Rowand after picking up Thome and re-signing Kong @ 4/52.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:37 AM) It's also entirely possible that by 2009, that $13 million could look like a bargain too...for a guy wanting to pick up his 4th ring with us. God I want Konerko back now. It won't be Ortiz and Ramirez, but it'll be a damn good second place. Also, a $3 Million buyout is dirt cheap, and I am sure if we kept him that long, the Sox would use the Buyout and sign him for lower for a 1 yr deal.

QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:39 AM) That's assuming that Manny still stays with the bo sox for next year. HE GAWN!

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:37 AM) The Indians were also said to be interested. They could use a first baseman so Hafner could be the full-time DH since he stinks defensively. They aldo had the prospects to deal for Thome. Would you rather see Thome back on the Indians? Did you forget how much Thome used to rape us? Now he can rape them! Opening day @ The Cell! -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:34 AM) I cannot see where in the world you get those numbers. As far as I know ARow will be paid $3.25 million next season after earning $2 million last season. If he declines it, the White Sox can exercise a $5 million option." from: http://kffl.com/player/5548/mlb -
QUOTE(Scuff @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:27 AM) well they keep saying he is owed $43.5 over the remaining 3 years so 43.5-22m=21.5m 21.5m/3 = 7.1666 to be exact but 7.2 works you are right though they are giving different numbers and if the sox only pay Thome 5.2million this year that just clears up even more money for this years budget.. Yeah, because he has a 3.0 Million buyout for 2009, that is where the 3 million is coming from. His real numbers for the contract are: 2006 - $12.5 Million 2007 - $14.0 Million 2008 - $14.0 Million 2009 - $13.0 Million (Club Option - $3 Million buyout)

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Nov 23, 2005 -> 11:50 PM) I like this quite a bit. I can live with Anderson when you are adding a major stick like Thome. I've heard that his elbow isn't that big a concern if he doesn't have to play first, which is good for us. I just don't know how you can pass on this opportunity at less than $8 mil a year. There's a good chance he out-produces Konerko, who'll obviously make a lot more than that, and when you consider Anderson replaces Rowand, our payroll only goes up like $4 mil this year. If all we did is pick up Thome and re-sign Paulie at the 4 for 52, then the Sox would be under last years numbers, with those moves only: Thome's contract: 2006 - $12.5 Million (-7.3 Phils) $5.2 Million 2007 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) $6.7 Million 2008 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) $6.7 Million Savings in 2006 from lost salaries: Frank Thomas - $8 million Carl Everett - $4 million Aaron Rowand - $3.25 million Total - $15.25 million 2006 Costs Jim Thome $5.2 million Frank Thomas buyout $3.5 million Carl Everett buyout $0.5 million Total $9.2 million Available money from moves - $6.05 million Paulie's last salary: $8.75 million Estimated salary: $12.0 million Difference: $3.25 million Remaining cash: $2.80 million

QUOTE(Hey_Look_Its_Chase_Utley! @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 12:11 AM) There was a report that the Yanks wanted Michaels, but the Phillies said he was off the table, but that could be because of the potential deal they had with the Indians(Coco Crisp and David Riske for Thome and Michaels). I am just wondering where that leaves Michaels or Rowand. One is the odd man out.
-
I keep coming up with this: Thome's contract: 2006 - $12.5 Million (-7.3 Phils) $5.2 Million 2007 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) $6.7 Million 2008 - $14.0 Million (-7.3 Phils) $6.7 Million Savings in 2006 from lost salaries: Frank Thomas - $8 million Carl Everett - $4 million Aaron Rowand - $3.25 million Total - $15.25 million 2006 Costs Jim Thome $5.2 million Frank Thomas buyout $3.5 million Carl Everett buyout $0.5 million Total $9.2 million Available money from moves - $6.05 million Paulie's last salary: $8.75 million Estimated salary: $12.0 million Difference: $3.25 million Remaining cash: $2.80 million Pierre's 2006 salary: $5 million
-
I actually heard Marte and a prospect for Pierre. The main thing the Marlins need to do right now is drop salary by 20-30 million. They are well on their way.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2235175 Eyre, now Howry. I guess Loaiza will be the next ex-Sox pitcher to join the Bubs.
