http://www.wxyz.com/wxyz/nw_local_news/art...4488126,00.html Investigators: Suspects Responsible for Killing Spree By Anu Prakash & Michael Rosenfield Web produced by Sarah Morgan February 22, 2006 Wednesday, investigators laid out the evidence against the man and woman who are responsible for a killing spree. The suspects were being held in the Genesee County Jail and will be taken to Macomb County for their arraignment on Thursday. A few months prior to her murder, Melissa Berels met Patrick Selepak while working at VG’s supermarket. Police said Selepak befriended Melissa and would stop by the store to visit her. The two were even spotted talking in a field outside her home. New Baltimore Police Chief John Bolgar said, "She was very trusting, she was a very kinds person and as a result of this, Patrick used that to his advantage and his fiancés." Police believe Selepak and his fiancée Samantha Bachynski murdered Melissa and her husband Scott Berels to make their own lives easier. Police said the couple was suffocated and the suspects attempted to kill Scott by injecting bleach into his veins. He was also beaten with an AK-47. Money was not taken from the Berels’ home, but police believe the suspects had a plan. "We’re not sure what all their financial interests were in this. It was mainly financial and to make their lives comfortable," said Chief Bolgar. After the murder police found a receipt in the Berels’ home that showed Samantha Bachynski had purchased duct tape at a nearby CVS. Police released the surveillance video from the store and a tip lead police to her and eventually to Patrick Selepak. After allegedly killing the Berels, the two suspects partied in Flint, eventually befriending a 53-year-old man at bar on Saturday. Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said, "It was part of a plan that they would take advantage of a vulnerable adult, a vulnerable person. Mr. Johnson was very kind to them, he purchased things for them." The man invited the suspects to stay at his home, but soon recognized the two as being wanted for murder. Tuesday morning, as he tried to escape, the suspects shot him with a riffle they had stolen during an armed robbery at Dunham’s Discount Sports in Flint. Police said the suspects strangled him and then wrapped his body in plastic and put it in the back of his blue pickup truck where he froze. The couple then headed to Owosso, where they picked up a female acquaintance and drove her to a job interview at a hotel in Owosso. The woman became suspicious and called police from inside the hotel, ending the couple’s crime spree. Police said they would not be surprised if more victims were found in the future calling the suspects "extremely violent individuals." Timeline of the crime spree: - A hand gun was stolen from the Gibraltar Trade Center in Mt. Clemens. - Last Monday, two automatic assault riffles were stolen from Dunham’s in Flint. - Last Thursday, Scott and Melissa Berels were found dead in their New Baltimore home. - Tuesday, police found Patrick Selepak and Samantha Bachynski in a pick-up truck in Owosso. There was a body in the back of the truck. - Police traced the pick-up truck to a home in Vienna Township.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060222/ap_on_...tain_bank_heist Armed Bank Robbers Steal $43.5M in London By JENNIFER QUINN, Associated Press Writer A gang of armed robbers impersonating police officers tied up employees at a southern England security company and stole the equivalent of $43.5 million, the Bank of England said Wednesday in disclosing one of the largest bank heists in British history. The money, about 25 million pounds in bank notes, was stolen overnight from a cash center at Tonbridge in Kent county, a bank spokesman said on condition of anonymity, according to bank policy. No one was injured in the robbery. The heist at Securitas Cash Management Ltd. began when some of the thieves, dressed as police officers, stopped the firm's manager as he drove home. The manager got into their car, which he believed to be a police vehicle, and was handcuffed by the robbers, authorities said. At the same time, another team of thieves went to the manager's house, saying he had been in an accident. The men convinced his wife and young son to leave the home and go with them. The first team, with the manager in the car, met up with a white van and another group of thieves. The manager was placed in the van, which then headed toward the Tonbridge depot, police said. The manager allegedly was told to cooperate or his family would be hurt. Some of the robbers then changed clothes, donned balaclavas to cover their faces and brandished handguns before entering the security company and tying up 15 staff members on duty, police said. The thieves were inside the building for more than an hour. Detective Superintendent Paul Gladstone said he believed the robbery was planned down to the last detail. Sounds like something George Clooney would play the lead role in..

QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Feb 22, 2006 -> 04:06 PM) That actually never happened when I was a kid, but I can only imagine how awkward it can be. Like the time my dad wore white high heels after Labor Day Weekend. Talk about awkward silences. Uncle Joe and his husband Aunt Jimmy could barely contain their horror.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 22, 2006 -> 03:59 PM) Cabrini doesn't even really exist anymore. It's there. Tons of thugs still hang around the grounds. They are moving slow on the demolition and new construction. Though I was just pointing out that 5+ years ago it was very dangerous for any folks, especially white folks, who didn't "belong" there.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?.../a111008S99.DTL Naval Academy Charges Quarterback With Rape By TOM STUCKEY, Associated Press Writer Wednesday, February 22, 2006 (02-22) 11:10 PST Annapolis, Md. (AP) -- In another embarrassment for one of the nation's service academies, Navy quarterback Lamar Owens has been charged with raping a female midshipman in her dormitory room. Owens, a 22-year-old senior from Savannah, Ga., was charged under the military code of justice because the alleged attack took place on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy, academy spokesman Cmdr. Rod Gibbons said Wednesday. "He remains assigned to the Naval Academy and will continue to attend class, performing other duties normally assigned to midshipmen pending results of the investigation," Gibbons said. He said the academy took steps to prevent contact between Owens and the woman. Investigators said Owens attacked the woman last month after entering her room in Bancroft Hall without her consent. Gibbons said the academy was offering counseling to the woman, whose name was not released by the school. Owens was not made available for comment. An Article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian grand jury inquiry, will be held to determine if there is sufficient evidence to go ahead with a court-martial. The investigation is being handled by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service. Owens guided Navy's football team to an 8-4 season record that included victories over Air Force and Army and a victory in the Poinsettia Bowl over Colorado State. The military academies have been under close scrutiny since 2003, when women at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado began coming forward with accusations that they had been sexually assaulted by fellow cadets and were ignored or ostracized by commanders when they spoke out. A Pentagon task force found that hostile attitudes and inappropriate treatment of women also persisted at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and at the Naval Academy. The Naval Academy has had a series of sexual harassment and assault cases in recent years. In 2001, three former football players agreed to withdraw from the academy after being charged with rape. Two years later, a midshipman was expelled for inappropriate sexual contact with two women classmates. The academy's superintendent, Vice Adm. Rodney Rempt has taken a strong stand against sexual harassment and discrimination. He went so far as to remove the words "sailor men" from the school fight song. It was Rempt who made the decision to file charges against Owens. Earlier this month, a senior at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., was charged with sexually assaulting six female cadets in the barracks and other sites. Webster M. Smith, 22, a linebacker on the football team, was charged under military law with rape and other offenses and has denied any wrongdoing. Is a court-martial different then being charged? If so.. why not wait till there is sufficent evidence to release this guys name...?

Cabrini today is a Disney ride from what it was 5 years ago. Just sayin..

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 22, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) At that point in time, he was okay with entering in this judgement. The appeals process is where we can re-examine the case. We do not rexamine judgement or sentencing because of second thoughts or political change in a judge. Would he remove himself from the case then?

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 22, 2006 -> 02:25 PM) Are you going to the game on the 14th?? That's the game we are going to. I think we leave at 3 something on the 14th.. I'll check and PM you. Is that the only one you're going to?

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 22, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) It's not really a big deal. This was the result of a company merger - not the sale of the ports themselves. Ahh.. I see.
