  1. I think this is silly. Remember everybody: Crede's entire season turned around last year when he came back from injury and all of a sudden had longer hair and the goatee. He was the "new" Crede--and the Crede that I remember from the WS and want to not change. I don't mind the long hair on the guys--yes, it totally reminds me of the Red Sox in a good way. I'm more worried about how they're playing than how they're looking. What next, are they gonna start telling Freddie that he has to tuck in the back of his shirt now? Then again, JR is notoriously corporate and about appearance. A woman I know who used to work there talked about how strict the dress code was.
  2. I guess what I should have said is that Thome IMO will be the one to set the distance record for a homer in the Cell. I mean, Thomas had power (he damn near hit the beer stand in left field a couple of times) but Thome just hits MONSTER shots. Wait 'till one day when that wind's blowin out and he gets one up nice and high (like on opening night)... and, mark my words. It will happen. This year.
  3. I contend that Thome will not only be the second to hit one onto the concourse, but the first to hit one of the billboards/scoreboard. Or maybe park one into the fan deck. We shall see...
  4. QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Apr 16, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) I am not sure I would want to listen to the Hawk talk about "hot balls". LOL! Schwetty!
  5. If somebody wants to detail the statistics on how many people are injured on slip n' slides every year, perhaps I'd be a little more upset about Buehrle and his tarp diving. Silly. He's more likely to get hurt driving home.
  6. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 14, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) I'll be at the game today, it will be my first of the season. Welcome, K, to your first one in 2006! I am there tonight too--my first night game of 2006. I'm pysched.
  7. I'm not as down on Pods as most are here (wow!) but I agree it is a critical hole in the lineup. He can't steal if he can't get on base and since he's not getting on base, he's more or less worthless right now. I've also bemoaned the lack of speed elsewhere in the past; for a team built on speed, pitching and defense, the "speed" part pretty much dies when Pods is not healthy/on his game. Meaning: one guy. Unless I missed something and other people are stealing bases this year. I'd say give him a few months; if, at the all-star break, he's still so-so, get rid of him.
  8. To answer your questions: -No, they do not do the O--EEE-OH thing for Magglio at Comerica (at least not last year and not this year--yesterday--when I was there). -Yes, the park is great but yes, there is a merry-go-round behind the councourse at about home plate. Think of Comerica as the Cell married with an outdoor mall. -I could be wrong about Thome's double, but I didn't see it -Yeah the pizza is whatever, but the brats were good. I couldn't find any polish though! !!! -They don't do fireworks there for home runs--when a Tiger hits one, the water fountain all of a sudden gets really lively (LOL) and then you hear this canned Tiger roar--cheesy -The outfield is huge there--the park makes the Cell look like Wrigley. But the park is unique in that it's not very "vertical"--the upper deck is wider than it is higher, making it look really nice
  9. I just sat down here at DTW waiting to fly back to Chicago--caught the Sox vs. Tigers from 4th inning on. Some observations: -When I came in we were up 9-3 and then scored a couple of more. I thought we were going to ice them. Then they came all the way back, almost. Was it just me, or was Garland having one of his "big innings" circa 2004? -Brandon then appeared to blow it but settled down. Phew. -I don't know what it said on TV, but our Thornton was throwing HEAT. More than a few at 97, a few at 96, even one at 99! Maybe two! The Sox fan next to me was calling him "Lefty Jenks." I didn't know he threw that hard. -Guess how much a beer is there? $8.00. Granted it's a bigger one than at the Cell but OMG. -A brat/hot dog is $5. What are they at the cell? $3.50, right? -The funnest part of going to a Sox game in a different city is finding the Sox fans there and then we all kind of sit together and form our cheering section. This one dude, who lived in Detroit but was a Sox fan, was LOUD and you probably heard this dude on the TV broadcast, he was that loud. -Scotty? Is it time for triple A for a while? This is awful. -There were two grounders to Cintron where we all joked "Uribe would have had that!" Or maybe it wasn't a joke. -Pudge looks tiny compared to other players. Then I saw his profile on the scoreboard, listing him at 5'9". I'll bet even that's a stretch. -Jim Thome? Holy f******* sh**! -Iguchi's double to center was as far away as you could hit that ball in Comerica and still keep it in the park (I missed the homer). -If you ever get a chance to check out Comerica, do it. Very nice, comfortable park. You'll see other Sox fans there. Note: Sox dugout is on 3rd base line and not first. CORRECTION: it's on first base line and not third. Oops. -Lastly, people in Comerica can't catch a foul ball to save their freakin' lives. There had to be at least 13 when I was there and not one was caught. LOL.
  10. You are so right that during a couple of those SCORCHING games last summer (e.g., the Cubs series at the cell), I remember that they wore their black jerseys. And I remember thinking they must be roasting their ASSES off in those. I was in the outfield in the home white and even I was dying. I'm not kidding. I remember the Cubs series, Boston (mid-summer) and I think Oakland as just being unbearably hot and sweating my ass off. To the other point, the "alternate" old school jerseys this summer are BUTT UGLY. No thanks. I wish they would have the 1917 cream colored ones again--I have the blue but the light colored ones disappeared.
  11. You know what's interesting? They never wore the black ones durng the playoffs last year. The black is definitely my favorite. But no, last year on the road it was gray all the way. I was superstitious because I had switched from the gray for the first game of the ALCS and we lost so I put the gray back on and never changed it. In fact, I'll be at Comerica tomorrow sitting behind our dugout, wearing the black. I actually have to wear my white Sox hat because I managed to lose my regular black one this week. Let's face it though: all their jerseys are kickass--I have 'em all and I love 'em. Except that damn '59 one for $275 dollars! :headshake
  12. I'm no Cubs fan, but I honestly think D-Lee is probably the best all-around player right now. And a class act.
  13. Nobody is more of a Sox killer than Sweeney. Good point. I've seen him trash us more than a few times and he's like our bete noire. The only other guy I remember sticking it to us like that is that left fielder from Texas who looks like Dr. Evil.
  14. BTW for those questioning the game threads--some of us are at work or don't have TVs here or don't have the bandwidth to watch via the 'net (well, we're not supposed to at least). I can say for me that game threads are one of the most entertaining ways to follow a game if you can't watch (radio would be second choice, although with our sorry-ass lineup in the booth, maybe not). I love 'em. I feel like I'm part of the game, thanks to all who keep posting the updates. I hope they never go away.
  15. I agree. This certainly isn't 2005 anymore and I had a hunch we wouldn't be on that magic carpet ride for two years in a row. Hey the Yankees aren't doing much better and lest everybody forget, Cleveland was awful the first half last year before they turned into the no-losing monster that almost swept us out of the playoffs. I will invoke the refrain that I used last year, and the year before that: talk to me at the All Star break. That's the best indicator of where your season is going (although granted out September swoon last year seemed to come out of nowhere). Panic? No. I'm a bit concerned about the bullpen, but welcome back to reality. This is how seasons usually go.
  16. QUOTE(rudylaw @ Apr 10, 2006 -> 09:36 AM) I do believe that there is a limit of 5 threads per year about Sox intro music and that limit has been exceeded. Thank you and please come again. LOL. Yeah, true. But there's always gonna be people wanting to know this (I was one of them least season) so I don't know if this is ever going away.
  17. For whatever it's worth, when I was in KC last week and watching them all walk out (pre-game I stood in the outfield seats and watched Garland and Widger play long-toss) Jenks didn't look as big as I remember. As in, he didn't stick out right away from a distance where you could say: that's him! Anyway, yes it is great news that Jenks' velocity is back. Bring the heat, baby! Now, if Freddie could do the same thing...
  18. I hear ya. I am used to the cold weather but even with a long sleeve shirt under my jersey I was cold. Although there were a lot of people there feeling no pain, LOL. And did I mention how LOUD KC fans are? I was impressed (last year as well). They get into it. Detroit fans, by comparison, are l-a-m-e.
  19. QUOTE(pale_hose @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) Ya know, its only the 4th game of the season, but still...these last three games have been horrible. We started out great tonight, but what the hell has been happening to our pitching later in the games? Should we be worried? Or just not worry? I think tonight will be a wake-up call for us and we can pull our heads out of our butts...The Royals? damn... I agree. We suck right now. This certainly ain't last year. I've been now to two back-to-back losses in less than three days, freezing my ass of during both. Oh well. We're a warm-weather team, right? :banghead
  20. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 11:16 PM) Funny, they kept talking about how cold it was, no one at the park looked cold. I saw a lot of people in t shirts or just a sweatshirt. I was there, dude. After 8PM it got COLD. Not just cold (probably low 40s, upper 30s) but with a nasty wind that was swirling around the whole place. Even the ushers were going inside under the stands to get out of the wind. Up until that point it was a perfect spring night for a ballgame. I also noticed that quite a few Sox players had nothing on under their jerseys (meaning: turtleneck or long-sleeve t-shirt) which surprised me. I had a long-sleeve T and I was freezing when that wind blew. But yes, just a few seats down from me were guys in their polo shirts that seemed totally unaffected. Go figure.
  21. QUOTE(AirScott @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 10:52 PM) unless they're going to put everything on it for me, I'll be just as content with ketchup and/or mustard on my hotdog. if anyone here is the expatriate, it's you for eating your FREEDOM fries with mayo. Hey now! I would NEVER buy into the whole "freedom fries" silliness! Having said that, I personally don't care what you put on your polish/hot dog/fries--whatever makes you happy.
  22. I'm not sure if this was covered already (total thread derailment alert) but while I think ketchup on hot dogs is un-American (and definitely un-Chicagoan), while in Europe I did try french fries with mayo and as disgusting as it sounds it is delicious. I haven't tried to duplicate it here because it's just so many damn carbs, fat, calories, etc.--but as gross as it sounds they really do go together. Moving back on topic--kinda--my highlight of this month attending my first game was having my first polish "with" from the Cell. I live for those things. Just for the hell of it, I tried a brat but I was unimpressed. And believe it or not I don't think I've ever had a hot dog there. But them Polish... mmm...
  23. Yeah I wouldn't want to be wearing WS caps/jerseys all season because it's like painting a bullseye on your bad self. That said, I did notice from standing a few feet away tonight that a lot of them had brand spankin' new hats. I thought players were superstitious and wore the same hat year after year without washing it or anything? Must be me; my bad. BTW Paulie got a shave and a haircut, Thome looks like a badass and A.J.'s hair is really long--he looks like a surfer dude.
  24. Well I'm certainly not giving up on the season four games in but I think it's safe to say that we suck right now. Big time. We sure did tonight. We should have STOMPED them after that early lead.
  25. Nope. LOL. Luckily I am out of here tomorrow morning and back to Chicago. My luck sucks here. On the bright side, I'm in Detroit next week to see them on Thursday. I do a little better there. I will share with everybody one funny story though; at some point during the game (I was second row behind our dugout) a bunch of frat-boy types who were KC fans started giving Ozzie some crap when he went out to the mound. When he came back, they were even worse. Ozzie looked up at them while entering the dugout, and blew them a kiss. CLASSIC. God that was funny. They didn't know what to do.
