QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) There's more bulls*** being spilled over this then a cow with a poop blowout. I sure do loves me some oratory. Nice imagery, Kap.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 12:19 PM) And if he wouldn't have answered their HYPOTHETICAL question (with what was CLEARLY his opinion, and he even said it was HIS OPINION), or said "no comment", then people would be reading into that as well. To take it one more step, if something happened, and he had "no comment", he'd get crucified for not telling people his thoughts. It doesn't matter. There's never a right answer for anything anyone says that's a part of the Bush administration, no matter how you cut it where most people are concerned, right or wrong. You know, its interesting, I started a thread last year (I think) asking for people to post the positive accomplishments of this administration. I myself had 2 or 3. Others had some as well. But two things stood out to me... one, there weren't very many things listed. And two, it was in many cases the "liberals" who were posting them. Back to the point directly, if he had said "no comment" or something like "there is of course an ongoing level of threat here", or something like that... I wouldn't have said boo.

Bush's first Surgeon General, Dr. Richard Carmona, says that his speeches and statements were edited, deleted and/or interfered with during his tenure on such subjects as stem cell research, teen pregnancy and second hand smoke. This isn't really a surprise, of course, and it happens to at least an extent in all Presidencies. BushCo of course has tended to go much further with it, but its not really new behavior. So here is the question, which I would like to hear opinions on. When is it appropriate for Presidents to censor or edit statements from the nation's leading representatives of scientific communities, such as medicine and space exploration? I personally have no problem with some of it, to fit their agenda. But I do think there is a limit. The Surgeon General is not supposed to be spouting a political agenda, but instead informing the nation and the government of the latest data, research and good health practices. If he is being told to leave major issues out or manipulate representation of facts, I don't think that's appropriate. How do others feel about this?

One wonders if the Sox are bringing him up to showcase him to other teams.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 11:20 AM) He DID NOT tell "the public about a threat". He was asked a question, and he answered it. Now, everyone is racing around saying "the sky is falling...", when he NEVER SAID THAT. He was asked HIS OPINION, not throwing things out there as "FACT" like you all are trying to say. There's a BIG difference. Again, he may be a moron, but not on this particular subject. I just disagree. Whether he was asked or not is not relevant to the words he chose to use. This wasn't him talking to his buddy over dinner - it was a public statement.
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 10:19 AM) Maybe. Seriously, it irks me when stuff like this comes up. A media outlet asks him a question - "what do you think the threat level is right now?"... and he says - (paraphrasing)... Al Queda has been known to plan attacks in the summer, and given what just happened over in London and Glaskgow, my gut feeling says that there's a hightened risk right now and we're more vunerable for an attack. WTF is wrong with that? But no,... he's just a stupid, ignorant Bush f***up. THIS is what I'm talking about when talking about "bias" toward anything Bush. This is absolutely not even worth talking about, yet the common theme here from people who can't stand Bush is what a moron Cheurtoff is. He may be a moron, but not for this statement. Your paraphrasing makes it different than what he said. And Soxy had it right - detectives don't take their gut feelings, and tell the whole department to find suspect X based on it and arrest him. No, they find evidence and try to piece things together. When Chertoff tells the public about a threat, he has a responsibility for the consequences of those statements. A serious, difficult responsibility. And to make the country shift its behavior based on his gut feeling is utter B.S. So I am sorry, but in this case, this is not just some poor quote taken out of context. This is another in the line of "leaders" that BUsh has chosen, whose methods would be laughed away from the table in any serious private business enterprise. No plan, no facts, nothing to stand on but "gut feelings". We saw the same B.S. from Brownie and others. Bush picks people who think like him - which is really, really unfortunate.

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 09:32 PM) One thing that people forget is that EVERY religion has its own claims to exclusivity. There is always a point where one religion says, we are right and you are wrong. Otherwise, they would not be saying anything at all about who we are, where we are going, or how to get there. B'Hai says B'How ya doin'.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) Standing past is absolutely ridiculous. It honestly upsets me to even think about the possibility of not trading any starting pitcher. How exactly is the ballclub expected to improve in future seasons if not for the trade of someone holding value? We've been over the various options for acquiring talent, and this team has practically none of them working in their favor. Since Buehrle's presence on this ballcub is assured, Garland should be traded. This entire scenario with contract extensions and the possibility of not receiving top value (because of time remaining on a contract) in return will only be rehased again next season. We're not winning anything within the immediate future whether Williams realizes it or not. I'd rather have whichever package is received for Garland and Contreras, in addition to the likely struggles of their replacements, rather than have both pitch meaningless games. 2010 should be the goal. Perhaps by then, DLS will be available. Last I checked, there are still 3 weeks of July left. I am 90% sure there will be trades, probably multiple, involving our pitchers. Just may not be today or tomorrow. And if KW has shown anything, its that he would never be building towards 3 seasons out. His target is usually the present, or at worst, the upcoming season (2008).

Ichiro deserves his own thread

QUOTE(MHizzle85 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) SportsCenter just reported that it's almost a done deal. WTF? 20M a year?! For that price, forget about it. -
QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Yes, in the physics of circular motion, centrifugal force is a myth. But the word itself is a real world. I am a snobbish erudite prat for feeling the need to point out the distinction I know, so hopefully you weren't hurted by it. You hurted my feelings. Your a jerk.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 06:40 PM) *sigh Don't do enough, do too much, don't do enough, do too much. You people are hard to please. This has zero to do with too much or too little. Its just plain idiocy.
-
QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) Untrue. Centrifugal IS a word, it's just not the motion characteristic for circular motion (aka centripetal force) that most people believe it is. Using the term to describe societal movement away from central beliefs, for example, the centrifugal leanings of a separatist movement, is perfectly acceptable use of a real word that means to flee (Latin fugere) from the center. Well I'll be damned. I guess I misinterpereted my physics teachers saying centrifugal force didn't exist.
-
Centrifugal. Is NOT a word.

So, Mr. Michael Chertoff, director of DHS, has said we need to be extra-vigilant this summer due to an increased threat of a terrorist attack. His evidence for such an attack? His “gut feeling” No wonder GWB put this guy in charge of Homeland Security – they sure do love their gut feelings. No need for evidence, facts or patterns here. No sir, no room for analysis of intelligence. Amazing.

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 01:03 PM) Cant rule out a trade bringing a major leage outfielder here And with the ASG, if a trade did happen yesterday or today, we won't hear about it until tomorrow.

It may not be a recall - may be an activation from DL.

Let's keep it OFF the personal topics, folks.

Saw that preview before Transformers, and it looks awful. At the end, everyone in the theatre was chuckling, like.. "was that supposed to be scary or funny?"

I'd love to see Aaron back roaming in CF, as long as his contract isn't outlandish. But if we have Rowand in CF, and a youngster like Sweeney or (god forbid) Owens, in one of the corners, then we need a high end guy in the other corner (like Ichiro, ideally). Ichiro-Rowand-Sweeney would look pretty good to me. And if Anderson is still with the organization, he might make a nice 4th OF.

Po-Yu Lin looking almost mortal, with his ERA now puffing up to a whopping 1.35. I'm guessing he's in Kanny pretty soon.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 03:56 PM) What we would do is essentially archive this site and have it accessible at soxtalk.net (we own that domain as well) and have the posts turned off but you could always go through and look at it. Than Soxtalk.com would have all of the new posts and everything would be fresh (we stlil use the same mysql database but the problem is our database, which is absolutely ginormous...think about a notepad document that is well over a couple gigs) is corrupt and we can't go in and get rid of that corruption without spending a lot of money (cause none of us have the knowledge to do so and from the sounds of it it is also a very labor intense project). So basically put you would still be able to see the site, looking like it does now (with on ads on the .net version) but it would be a non working version (aside from looking at posts). In a year or two this place would really be the only place most look (aside from the ocassional glance to see the 05 archive or whatever else people are curious about). Cool. Whatever is best and easiest for the site and the Admins who do the tech work, which I know is a big pain at times.

My wife pre-ordered on Amazon. We have a system - she orders it and reads it... then I read it... then the movie comes out.
-
I don't care about post counts, but I do like having access to all the previous posts. That would be the downside, to me - having a seperate site and a current site to look at for various things. If the database basics are remaining static (meaning you aren't change the type of DB you use), you may also be able to import the old data into the new format (of the message board layer software allows for that, and hasn't changed its architecture from version to version).

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 02:44 PM) Book > Movie = The Da Vinci Code Movie > Book = The Count of Monte Cristo Some books are better than the movie. Pretty rare, though. Some would say the LOTR movies were better than the books. Any other suggestions, anyone? Movies better than the book (for those who have seen/read BOTH).
