  1. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 10:42 AM) You KNOW the press corp had 85,000 people in the room SCREAMING that question to Tony Snow today. So again, the "beat" goes on... As they should be. QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 11:28 AM) This isnt any worse than what Clinton did 6 years ago...yet of course Dems like Schumer and the rest will be b****ing and moaning forever about it. Short-term memory is awesome 1. 6 years ago, Bush was in office. 2. I just realized, I think I am confusing 2 Bergers here - who did Clinton pardon or commute, and when? Can someone refresh my memory?
  2. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 10:24 AM) I would agree this would be the best approach in theory, but will it work? It certainly didn't work all that well with Arafat. And aren't we trying to do this in Iraq? We're trying to set up a democracy for the people there. We're trying to set up their infrastructure (obviously we could be doing a better job at it). The people there want that stuff. They have no beef with us. But the terrorist groups resist it, just like they would in every country. And it's not like the people can revolt on their own to overthrow their governments, they don't have the man power nor the weapons to do so. For this approach to work we would need to start a broad campaign to reclaim our image, then take military action to oust any militant regime in charge. But would this ever work with the 24/7 bashing on the US and the rest of the West that these countries spout out to their people? The part in bold hits on an important aspect to this, which we have done a really poor job at - information. The operations from military Psy-Ops are weak at best. But that's what we should expect - they are the military, and they are by nature the opposite of subversive. We could be making more and better use of private channels to penetrate the information networks in these places, and subtly get the message across. And by message, I don't mean "America is great". I mean real, unedited news and information.
  3. Actually, why not Wassermann? RH reliever at AAA, he's excelled at each level in the minors, this year he has a 1.09 WHIP, 1.83 ERA and righthanders are hitting only .132 against him. Seems like maybe Day could benefit from more AAA time (he pretty much skipped Charlotte), and his numbers even at AA weren't as good as Wasserman's at AAA.
  4. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) Creepy in a pedophilia kind of way. The ads feature what look to be 15 year olds wearing skimpy outfits. I feel dirty going into the store looking at all their ads that are plastered across the walls. Some info on the CEO from wikipedia: Great. So we can either support China and its questionable labor practices, or support an American company led by the world's creepiest CEO.
  5. Kind of surprised no one mentioned this yet... according to this morning's article on the Sox site, this started when MB's camp made an opening offer - 5/75. The Sox wanted 3, moved up to 4, and MB's camp came down on money from that 15 per (to whatever it is now, assumedly 14 per or something similar). Just some data to add to the discussion.
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 08:35 AM) Amid reports that WWE wrestler Chris Benoit allegedly injected his son with hormones because of a health condition, Scott Ballard, District Attorney of Fayette County, Ga., just released this statement: "There are additional reports that contradict the earlier information that suggested that Daniel Benoit may have suffered from Dwarf Syndrome or Fragile X Syndrome. Daniel's family denies that he suffered from either condition. As a result of the family's concerns, the Fayette County Sheriff's investigators and the District Attorney's Office have inquired into this matter. A source having access to certain of Daniel's medical reports reviewed those reports, and they do not mention any pre-existing mental or physical impairment. Reports from Daniel's educators likewise contradict the claims that Daniel was physically undersized. The educators report that Daniel graduated kindergarten and was prepared to enter the first grade on par with the other students." That poor child. Oh god, please tell me he didn't do that.
  7. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 09:08 PM) So it doesn't matter that we used to use lead paint, ride bikes without helmets, ride in cars without seatbelts, many kids riding in the back window, etc? Parents do those things now, DCFS has a hissy fit and tries to take your kids away. Attitudes were different then towards safety, life, etc. I didn't say it was a nice thing to do. I couldn't imagine doing that myself. But by the reaction of a few people here, you would have thought he shot the dog with a bb gun or something, or just tied his leash up to the luggage rack and had the dog hold on for dear life. I don't want to get to off track on this discussion, and I do see your point. But there is a key difference - in the cases of lead paint, seat belts, etc., we didn't know, did we? The knowledge wasn't there that said lead paint was dangerous. When the information was presented to the public, the public changed their behavior. in the case of treating an animal like that, knowledge is irrelevant - it was just as unnecessary then as it is now. That is what I mean when I say that time is irrelevant in this case.
  8. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 10:34 PM) Why is anybody surprised or mad by this? The rich getting away with everything is not some sort of republican or democrat issue, it's a money and power issue. I love the cute "America has the best justice system in the world" crap I always hear though. All in all, it is the best justice system in the world. Flawed indeed, but better than any of the alternatives I know of.
  9. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:25 AM) So you want Sweeney to ride the bench? Because that is what would happen if he came up here. The way I see it now, Terrero is the starting CFer. For RF, Dye is back and if he's not there, that's Andy Gonzalez' spot. And in LF -- so long as Dye is healthy -- Ozzie's got Mackowiak and Gonzalez. I think that the Sox think they'd be hurting Sweeney's development if they brought him up right now. And the fact that he's still not ready for the bigs is another reason he's not up. You do make a good point about AB's, Sweeney wouldn't get enough time. I think he is very close to being ready, and he is of course better than Owens. But I suppose its not the end of the world if he finishes the season in Charlotte and gets more opportunities. Plus I have to admit, I am starting to kind of like Gonzalez.
  10. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 10:20 PM) WHY IS IT ALWAYS DIFFERENT? This is what pisses me off about you people. I mean, if you people were consistent, that's one thing, but you're not. So explain to me why this is so different? /waits for left wing up the ass links to explain to me why Libby is such a cocksucker for being a "BushCo neo-con" who got off "scott free". Who said it was different, Kap? Who are the "you people" you refer to? Is anyone defending Berger?
  11. I think it would really be better, if the Presidential power to commute sentences or pardon criminals, didn't apply to people whose acts occured while they were in the executive. Otherwise, what is the point of prosecuting people in the executive at all?
  12. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 07:28 PM) I guess I'm thinking the reaction would be just as bad. Instead of them hating us for being there, they'll hate us for no longer spending a ridiculous amount on their one major export. One of Bin Laden's beefs was that we let Saudi Arabia take a step or two backwards. Imagine what the middle east would become we pulled out our XX billions we spend on oil. I'll predict what the Middle East would become... In the short term: oil outlet for China, India and other nations who aren't as quick on the alternative energy bandwagon. In the long term: Tourism haven. I kid you not. And for that industry, which is already growing there, they need stability.
  13. Given the quotes from KW in the Trib article, I feel a bit better about it getting done. Seems like he is optimistic, and that he has no desire to sign and trade. KW is of course known for sometimes obfuscating the message, but, in this case, he is saying these things TO MB, so I doubt he'd be dishonest. I think they all want to get it done.
  14. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 05:53 PM) That was in no way a smart thing to do, but keep in mind that this was the early 80's, when people still let kids sit in the suicide seats in the back of station wagons, with no seat belts. I am against animal cruelty, our whole family volunteers at the Humane Society (well, not the 8 year old), but you are acting like he killed the dog. bring it down a few levels of indignation. I think time is irrelevant here. I don't see how it was any less cruel then than it is now. Its not as if we are taking about centuries of time elapsed. It was cruel and unnecessary.
  15. What a crock of s***. Its just amazing, watching this administration blunder around the world like some sort of sugar-steeped ADD-affected 12 year old boy, complete with little toy soldiers and annoying little snickers.
  16. QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:03 PM) I think he was implying that if we diverted war funds to alternative energy exploration, became successful at utilizing those alternative energies, we would then have no reason to use their homelands as military staging grounds. If we have no interest in the oil, there's nothing else there but desert. If they want to blow one another up, have at it. We'll be out of the mess. It really comes down to having a belief that our government's involvement in that region, due to oil concerns, played a large role in the viciousness with which the radicals look at us. If we no longer have any involvement then the strains in the relationship must soften. That's pretty much it. We can't "fix" it now, but we can sure as heck get out and let them blow each other to bits. Or at least go in without an obvious artery there to cut.
  17. I'd so rather see Sweeney up than Owens. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:18 PM) Jerry Owens is one of the worst hitters I've ever seen. I don't think he's hit a single ball hard in his major league career. I think he may actually turn into something eventually, but I certainly would rather see Sweeney up here than Owens again.
  18. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) Cunningham for Richar. Well I'm an idiot. I knew about that trade, but somehow I didn't put 2 and 2 together.
  19. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 04:45 PM) He is on Bristol so looking in the Great Falls paper won't work heh. Try tricities.com. It looks like they are pretty good about doing game recaps. This was a cool link, interesting story, but didn't mention velocity Thanks for the article. I have no idea why I was looking at Great Falls - I think I had been searching for articles on Sergio Miranda right before Lin, maybe that's why.
  20. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 04:40 PM) HE GONE!! And you have Richar mentioned above, too. Prolly just a brain fart. Oops - I figured I'd miss someone who is gone. I missed the Cunningham move - where did he go? And what did I miss about Richar?
  21. Moves I'd like to see this year... Floyd to the majors, in the spot of whatever starter is traded Sweeney to the majors for Pods' spot Richar or Bourgeouis to the majors, if (when) Cintron or Mack are traded Gio to AAA in Floyd's spot Egbert to AAA in someone's spot, probably Nunez - release Nunez??? Lucy to AAA and demote Gustavo to AA (or maybe release Wiki, though he has gotten hot lately) Collaro to AAA in Sweeney's spot - let's see if that huge K ratio is really so bad Schnurstein to AA, release or demote Myers McCulloch to AA in Gio's spot Cunningham to AA in Collaro's spot FDLS or Teixera to A+ in McCulloch's spot (FDLS might be a rush, but he is so dominant) Chris Carter to A+ in Schnur's spot Maurice Gartrell to A+ in Cunningham's spot (Gartrell has already been at AA previously)
  22. Please, don't let this thread become another dissection of the term "ace", which is of course entirely subjective. Let's just agree that some of us would label MB an ace, and others would not, and move on with the topic.
  23. McCain's 2Q fundraising numbers are disappointing at $11M, probably will lag the leaders significantly (others haven't released numbers yet). He is also re-organizing his campaign. Not looking good for the only marginally moderate candidate in the GOP field.
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) You cannot tell me that with a true popular vote for President that all of the sudden 70% of entire country would come under consideration in a Presidential election. That is idealistic and unrealistic. If anything the electoral college actually gives more consideration to more places, because their electoral votes actually matter. If you don't believe me, look at how many people per electoral college vote there are in a state by state basis. If you take advantage away from the small states, you completely eliminate any reason for a candidate to waste his time in those kind of places, as they payoff becomes worthless. All that means is that only urban areas will be considered. As for the will of the people, there are protects for the minority in every single area of government. That is exactly why 50% +1 can't amend the constitution. That's why the Great Compromise took place... That is why we have appealate courts... The whole intent all over the framing of the constitution was to make sure that one group of people never had complete control over everything, and that goes for all branches of government, not just the legislature. Taking away the considerations of the small states is just one more thing that falls into that category. You are only acknowledging one type of vote loss - small states and rural areas. In the current system, because most states are pretty much a given for candidates, you lose far, far more votes, because you eliminate all but 5 or 6 states from making a difference. And that will generally INCLUDE those same small states in the at vote loss column. Look at the states that really mattered in the last election - OH, FL, PA. Those were the three states that got all the attention, and they are states with mostly urban populations. The small rural states, like the ones in the plains and the mountain west, were mostly ignored (except CO and NM). So again, yes, if you have a national vote you will see remote, rural areas get no attention from candidates. But, that loss is just a lot smaller than the current loss of voter power.
