QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 01:03 PM) From Gregor at the Herald. Let's hope Gregor is as inaccurate with his perceptions as Cowley and Gonzalez usually are. Besides, I just read elsewhere that Haeger is shooting for a pen spot now, but he's not mentioned on this list. They are all just guessing at this point, just like we are.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 12:45 PM) So what exactly does "step it up" entail? How about 300 OPS points over his main competition in Spring? Not good enough? I can't even imagine how this is f***ing with Anderson's psyche. I'm fine with it, as long as Ozzie picks the guy who is earning the job for Opening Day. So far, that's BA. if he keeps BA on the line like this, BA performs well, and he STILL gets sent down... then I'll be pissed.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 11:15 AM) He deserves a brutal beat down. I'm not even sure someone like this can be rehabilitated. To violently punch and kick a women like that is beyond my comprehension. I hate that all he can get is aggravated battery. If he beat a man like that aggravated battery is fine, but to beat a defenseless woman deserves more. That's why I said aggravated battery. It would be simple battery, except that it was particularly brutal, and he's a cop. Those are two possible circumstances of aggravation. You could also pile on other charges probably, depending on the details of what happened, and try to stack the sentences consecutively, if you really wanted to nail the guy.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) Slightly more upbeat sounding version from the NYT. I wouldn't call that upbeat. They are saying its no longer cureable, and that its in the bone, but can be managed. That sounds pretty awful to me. -
QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) I don't think that losing your license is a stiff enough penalty. If you're stupid enough to drive drunk, you're stupid enough to drive without a license. I'm OK with it on a FIRST offense, as long as no one (or their property) was hurt. But if it happens a second time, its no longer a freak incident, and its time to drop the hammer.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) Assuming Tony is a 200 pound man, it's roughly 1 to 2 drinks depending on the bartender. But it's also several drinks beyond when your reflexes start being impared. Quick BAC chart found at the top of a google search. Except its missing a key variable - time.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 10:49 AM) How much of a difference is a .08 to a .093? Roughly how many more drinks is it? Depends on the person (size mostly), and it depends on the timeframe.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 10:42 AM) Guess whose district got better known last night? Oh, that's right mine. And 10 points for mentioning speidies, the most deliciously simple "sandwich" on the planet. You lost me...

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 09:26 AM) I'm not against that at all. I'm just saying the thing he said was over the top. Cool.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 09:08 AM) The most recent examples are here From LCR So when the cops stop committing crimes, then they can start arresting people, get that timber out of their eye and all. Here is another parallel to consider. Cases where police abuse their authority and commit crimes while on duty, perhaps, should not be investigated by their own departments. Maybe another agency needs to do that. Similar with priests and abuse cases, the church shouldn't handle the investigations - the police should. Just a thought, and it might solve some problems in both instances.

John Edwards and his wife are scheduled to hold a press conference today, following Mrs. Edwards' discussions with her doctor about her breats cancer. This may or may not effect his bid for the Presidency. In any case, I certainly hope for the best for Elizabeth Edwards' health. -
OK so, here is Joe Cowley showing again how poor a writer he is. His latest article says that because the staff is talking about carrying 11 pitchers (which I assumed was the case anyway), that maybe Brian gets a roster spot as a defensive replacement. This despite that fact that Ozzie and Kenny have both said, crystal clear, that Brian will not be a backup on this team. Did Joe forget that? Then he says that Erstad has shown he can play CF everyday. This despite the fact that yesterday he played like crap out there. And then, he uses an Ozzie quote to prove that Erstad is solid in CF... except the quote quite clearly states that its NOT Erstad's job yet, and that Brian needs to step it up to get the job. I really dislike Cowley, and Gonzales. Its terrible that the two Sox beat writers at the major papers are so disappointing. Here is the Trib's article covering the same material, but, doing a much more thorough and accurate job of it (Gonzales doing better today). Looks like its Anderson, Terrero or Perez, and that Anderson is unlikely to be a backup. With Terrero struggling and Perez hurt, I think BA is definitely still in the hunt.
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 08:28 AM) That's terrible. Endangering everyone on the road with an alcohol-guided 3000 pound missle is worse. I think we need to take Germany's stance on DUI, or something similar. First offense - no driver's license for 5 years or so, probation/supervision over any other crimes during that period, and if an accident is involved, some short jail time. Second offense, a year in jail minimum (more if accident involved), and no driver's license again, ever.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 08:32 AM) Let me tie together two reoccurring themes here. The Church should not speak out against child abuse and other moral issues until they get their house in order. Until then, they are hypocrites. So why aren't those posters demanding that police stop arresting people for crimes until they get their house in order. Doesn't this make the police hypocrites? I don't know who said those things, but, I think the Church needs to keep doing its job AND get its house in order. Just like the police should.
-
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 08:26 AM) I hope he gets some jail time and every inmate knows he is a cop. This POS deserves the beat down!! Oh they'll know he's a cop. And I agree. I have no patience for cops who abuse their power, especially in a violent way.

I'm glad to see Haeger in the bullpen race. I'd much rather have him in there than Aardvark.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 07:54 AM) http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/national/MI42498/ Well that asshole needs a lot more than to be fired. He needs to be prosecuted for Agg Bat. But I take issue with the statement that this is why people don't trust the police. Just like we all try (to varying extents) not to judge someone based on race, religion of other things, I think its small-minded if people see some jerk like this and assume all the cops are untrustworthy. Chicago has something like 13,000 sworn officers. Even if only 5% are scumbags, that's 650 scumbags in uniform out there ready to do something like this. But I can tell you from experience that if you run into 10 cops on the street, 9 of them are likely to be more than upstanding. Chicago as a department in particular does have some serious systemic issues, though. They need real leadership, which they haven't had with the last couple Supers. And guys like this need to be made examples of. Fire him, and then prosecute him for as much as you can. Throw in the side charges too. Bury him.

NY Times calls for Attorney General's dismissal.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 21, 2007 -> 06:20 PM) I'm sorry, but I just don't see how any single thing they've done could qualify for impeachment here, under the high crimes and misdemeanors standard. Even if we assume the very worst...give you an example...we assume that it's not a coincidence that the White House arranged for the guy who bribed Duke Cunningham to be sent $140,000 to "Buy furniture for Cheney's office" about a week before he bought a $140,000 yacht for Duke Cunningham and then the White House fired Carol Lam in order to keep her from investigating that...I just can't see that hitting the top level. Maybe Rove, but I just can't see anythign that would hit the Pres. I just can't imagine how President Bush could be directly involved in any of the things they might have been trying to cover up by firing these guys, there just wasn't anything big enough. If Fitz was fired, ok, but he wasn't. And even if these guys were fired to totally stop investigations into Republicans...no matter how inappropriate that might be, there's no law saying they can't do it. Yet. There damn well better be one soon. I wasn't saying impeachment necessarily for any particular act. I was just pointing out that they've done any number of slimy, stupid things, but the thing that causes them the most trouble may end up being something much smaller. -
QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 21, 2007 -> 06:05 PM) Link heres a house in Detroit for $175. The estimated mortgage is $1 per month. It has fire damage but the land alone has to be worth more than that Jeez.

NY Times calls for Attorney General's dismissal.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Mar 21, 2007 -> 05:48 PM) Kap, for once, you're raising a great possibility. I think the idea of impeachment is rapidly coming to the table and may have a fighting chance based on seeds planted in this fight. If there ends up being enough political will for an impeachment, it may come from this attitude of a lack of accountability to Congress or the American people from the White House. The way the case lays out right now is this: Several US Attorneys were fired. The stated reason is "performance related," the real reason appears to be political in nature. This is not an illegal act. It is a shady one and when questioned before Congress, the Attorney General flat out said that the firings were not political in nature. Recently several emails have leaked out related to this affair that directly contradict what the AG says. There now appears to be the possibility that the Attorney General lied under oath to Congress. Apparently there are several documents now missing from the recent dump surrounding the time frame when the firings occurred. And the White House refuses to let Karl Rove and other persons in the employment of the White House testify under oath and without any written notes being taken. So if nothing unforward or illegal happened, why isn't the White House allowing a transcript of the interview to take place? I understand not testifying under oath, but I have a hard time accepting the "off the record" status of an interview. Apparently, so does Congress. Subpoenas look like they will be issued. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8...;show_article=1 Sort of bizarre, how this works. BushCo has done some many things that have made it a failed, terrible administration... so many things worth being really angry about... and yet here this impeachment might occur over something much less relevant than so many dozens of other things they've done. -
QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 21, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) I don't think Haeger makes it as the org. doesnt seem to high on him, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him and Phillips traded sometime during the season or next offseason. What has made you think the org isn't high on him? I've only seen positive comments from Ozzie and Coop.

QUOTE(HoosierSox @ Mar 21, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) Isn't that the same thing people said about Garland a few years ago. Not everybody out there acts like Carlos Zambrano. Well... Zambrano has the mental capacity of a cupcake. Is that kind of the same?
