  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 19, 2012 -> 09:08 AM) Why should that money be yours or mine? I just don't understand this liberal mentality you share with Obama - "it's your responsibility" to pay for everyone else. f*** that nonsense. I assume he meant this in reference to taxation and fairness - that the money in those tax shelters may not be taxed as fully as other monies for most people in the states. I don't think he meant that the US was simply entitled to his money.
  2. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 04:53 PM) What is there to know about Taylor Thompson? Have never followed him at all. Well, he's 25 years old and just repeated A+. The Sox drafted him in the 25th round in 2008 (at age 21), he didn't sign, and the Sox drafted him again in 2009 (at age 22), this time in the 44th round. He's a reliever, been a closer most of his time through the system. Was very effective (but a bit wild) in Bristol at age 22, then even better at age 23 in Kanny. Pretty good season last year in W-S, but he was 24 then, and then this year he repeated High A W-S, and has improved his control and his K rate. As for non-stat info... he's tall (6'5"), and he missed some time in 2010 due to an injury. Also had a DL stint this year, a brief one, for a triceps strain. He was highly considered out of high school but went on to college anyway (Auburn, pitched 3 years). Can (or could previously) throw mid-90's, but more often sits low-mid 90's. Has a curve and a change-up. Honestly, I am not sure why the guy is headed to the AFL. He certainly put up a very nice year, but that was at age 25 while repeating A+. My only guess is, they saw something "click" that made his stats improve that much this year, beyond just maturity and experience. Hard to say what that thing was. We'll see how he does against much tougher talent now though.
  3. This may interest a lot of people here, so I am going to update the thread title and put this info here... WILD CARD AND/OR ALDS TICKETS GO ON SALE TO THE PUBLIC AT NOON (CT) ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st There are pre-sales for season ticket holders, beginning TODAY.
  4. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 03:17 PM) One thing hard to ignore that needs to be fixed. The Sox don't draft well. Take notes Jerry if you plan on being a budget minded owner. Actually in the past few years, they've drafted a lot better. Team WAR from playes drafted 2008 and beyond for the Sox is higher than any other team. For that matter, they did that having only one year in that time with a particularly good draft position (2008). And, the new system really seemed to benefit them in the 2012 draft (although really, it is early to say for sure on that one). The system still lacks depth at a lot of positions, but things are getting better in the past few years.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) Safe to say that sanchez is pitching for a roster spot? (he's out of options right?) Is it a function of options? I think he becomes a minor league FA after this season, right?
  6. QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 01:23 PM) Interesting mix heading to Instructional. This AFL group seems to be more intriguing prospect wise than I can remember the last few years. Wilkins is the only guy coming off a disappointing season. Some of the AFL guys fall into the on-the-fence category, in my view. Guys who are on the edge of the prospect radar, and the Sox want to see what they have in them. Wilkins, Rodriguez and Taylor Thompson fit in there for me. Salvador Sanchez too, but he's that unusual converted-pitcher scenario (a la Sergio Santos), so it is a little different. Trayce Thompson, Carlos Sanchez and Andre Rienzo fit more squarely into the solid prospect department.
  7. Let's have a seperate thread for AFL discussions (and the AZ instructional league, aka mini-AFL). Sox players tenatively set for AFL: OF Trayce Thompson IF Carlos Sanchez IF Andy Wilkins P Andre Rienzo P Santos Rodriguez P Salvador Sanchez P Taylor Thompson The Sox also have 53 guys going to the instructional league. Gonzo says these guys are among them: Pitchers - Chris Bassitt, Eric Jaffe, Erik Johnson, Jefferson Olacio, Jeff Soptic, Kevin Vance. Catchers - Sammy Ayala, Kevan Smith. Infielders - Keon Barnum, Nick Basto, Joey DeMichele, Micah Johnson, Marcus Semien. Outfielders - Mark Haddow, Courtney Hawkins.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 10:01 AM) Cheapest tickets now going for $66. That's not a bad deal actually. I would imagine the face on those would be around $40-50 for a playoff game. Face values for ALDS games (per my season ticket holder info): Premium lower box and lower box: $60 Club level: $60 Lower reserved and bleacher: $55 Upper level box and premium upper box: $55 Upper level reserved: $42 Full season holders get a discount to about $5 lower for each. ALCS prices face range from $75 to $120 WS tickets range from $110 to $250 Special seating areas like Scouts and Jim Beam seats aren't listed, but I am sure they are very high.
  9. I was at the game. Despite the fact that it was 29k paid, and probably about 18-20k in actual attendance... that crowd was the most electric I've heard at a Sox game in a long time. Particularly the last few innings, the crowd was really into things. It was fantastic.
  10. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 17, 2012 -> 10:56 AM) Lake Forest is back to school with no teachers (the shocker being Lake Forest had school on Rosh Hashanah). In my opinion the teachers have overplayed their hand. These are, in my view, two very different scenarios (Lake Forest vs Chicago). CPS teachers make about half what LF teachers do, and CPS is pushing for lots of different changes, many of which are directly beneficial to students (like class size limits). LF, with their 6 figure average salaries, is just asking for more money, at a time when government is feeling the economic pinch. I really don't have any sympathy at all for the Lake Forest teachers, and they definitely overplayed their hand. CPS, I actually agree with the teachers on some of what they are trying to do.
  11. No longer qualified, has reached rookie status. Closing, moving to archives.
  12. If you have any AAP's, with the minor league regular season over, now is a good time to update them!
  13. After the head to head game today, the Sox and Tigers each have 16 games remaining... SOX 3 @ KC 3 @ LAA 3 vs CLE 4 vs TB 3 @ CLE DET 3 vs OAK 3 vs MIN 4 vs KC 3 @ MIN 3 @ KC Sox definitely with the tougher road, but then again, DET has trouble with ALW teams and KC is dangerous.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 16, 2012 -> 06:48 PM) After games on September 16th: White Sox: 16 (17 games left) Tigers: 20 (17 games left) Monday: DET (Fister) @ CWS (Quintana) 1:10 Fun fact... Detroit gave up multiple UER again today, and lost by 1 run. Defense again playing a big role.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 16, 2012 -> 10:03 PM) It sounds like it is on. My football game is telling me Rahm plans to file injunction. Sounds like the CTU board took the agreement to the delegates, and they balked at some aspects, particularly leeway for school closings. They want to take it to the full membership, then vote. That will take multiple days. Rahm in response wants to take legal action to stop the strike. Thing is, I'm surprised that if they are indeed close, they couldn't come to a one-week temporary agreement using last contract's tenets, to get the teachers teaching while the details are hammered out. I don't see either side suggesting it, though I'd imagine it would be easy enough to do.
  16. Ya know, if people think the CTU teachers look bad here... how about the Lake Forest HS teachers? They make on average almost twice what CPS teachers do, and the Lake Forest ones are striking purely about money. Kind of hard to get the community in your corner when you are striking over money and most of you make 6 figures.
  17. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 14, 2012 -> 10:30 PM) it appears that a plane ticket to Minnesota was not offered to Mr. Morel. if the roster is accurate on whitesox.com, the sox are currently carrying 18 pitchers and 17 position players on the big club. the only guys on the 40-man roster who are not with the team (excluding guys on the DL) are: Anthony Carter Simon Castro Charlie Leesman Nestor Molina and Mr. Morel. I'm honestly surprised they keep using a 40 man slot for Anthony Carter. I haven't see or read anything in recent years to suggest he's worth protecting over some guys who aren't protected.
  18. That would be teh awesome, to have him back for the DET game or earlier. I love me some Dweezy, but him hitting 3rd is just craziness.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 14, 2012 -> 12:39 PM) This has come up before, but, a cool graph from a cool company: Not surprising - even with some downside value risk, it is far cheaper and smarter to buy then rent right now (if you plan to stay for at least a few years). The problem is tight credit, or not having downpayment, for most people. As the markets continue to recover, and employment improves (hopefully), the down payment barrier will be removed for more people. So it really then becomes about the credit. Also... when there's blood on the streets, buy property. In Detroit.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 14, 2012 -> 03:44 PM) My boss pulled strings and got me and a buddy front row seats right next to the tarp on the 3rd base line. It might have been the best game ever for me. Yeah I was there too. In fact, I think we talked at that game, didn't we? That team seemed to want to give it away as the season went on, but somehow, they pulled it out. Would love this season to be the same.
  21. 2012 End of Season... Charlie had probably the best year of his minor league career in 2012. After seemingly dropping off the prospect radar bouncing between A+ and AA for three seasons and finally hitting AAA at age 26, he posted some very respectable numbers in 170.1 innings (by far the most of his career): 3.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 1.5 BB/9, 6.2 K/9, .260 BAA. His K rate did start to drop off a bit in August/September, but given he only pitched 103.2 innings the year before, that is to be expected. Charlie put himself back on the radar. Shirek completed his 6th minor league season (if his very brief 2007 appearance counts), and that makes him a minor league Free Agent. That being the case, if the Sox want him back for 2013, they will have to compete with 29 other teams to sign him to a new minor league (or major league) deal. Given the depth of starting pitching talent for the Sox, Charlie is behind a few people, so he may elect to go elsewhere to get a better shot at the bigs. But wherever he goes, he certainly helped his stock in 2012.
