QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 11:20 AM) Recently, the Bears institued a Pay-As-We-Play process, where you give them your credit card #, but you aren't charged for the tickets until it's official that a home playoff game will happen. If the playoffs don't happen, then you aren't charged. (other than a small handling fee) Do the Sox offer an option like that or do you have to give them all the money now? I wish.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 01:04 PM) Sox sign a Dominican righty. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospe...er-victor-done/ Victor Done? Love the name. Also liked seeing this...

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 12:32 PM) I was at the Voyagers game. I like Micah Johnson offensively. His homer was clobbered, all his hits hard hit. Defensively he seemed kinda slow-footed. So many of Orem's hits were seeing-eye singles that were just out of the reach of the Great Falls infielders. This kid Barroso has a strong arm in RF. Brennan was pretty impressive. He had a good mix of pitches. Beck came into the game with the bases loaded and 2 outs and fanned his man. His fastball was clocked at 92. He looked pretty good but struggled with his control. It was a fun game until the bottom of the 8th. There were a few Sox fans in attendance, that's cool to see these young guys get some support at a road game. Thanks for the report! Always nice to hear from someone there in person. If you look at the game recaps for a lot of GF's games, a large portion of the hits for both teams end up being infield hits or ground balls through the infield.

I saw that the Sox are starting to send out the post-season ticket invoices to season ticket holders. Last couple years I dreaded that. This year, kind of excited for it!

Orem beat Great Falls, 8-7 Micah Johnson and Yoandy Barroso both 3 hits Brennan 3.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K Beck 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 07:59 AM) So no runs at AAA in just under 15 IP. I'll take it. Hector in three starts so far at AAA: 14.2 IP, 9 H, 0 R, 6 BB, 13 K

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 11:12 PM) Brandon Short has been pretty great since he returned. He was headed for AAA when he went down. I kind of hope he'd be tearing up A+. The key thing is that he's healthy and playing earlier than expected, in his rehab assignment.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 04:56 PM) Yeah, what's up with Bristol? They are terrible, literally, every year. I expected this season to be different with all of the high draft picks going there and some repeat guys, but they still suck. That team is a black hole. What's interesting is that the Sox' other rookie team, Great Falls, is almost always crushing that league. As I understand it, the Appy and Pinoeer leagues are both considered advanced-rookie, and at a similar level. But the Sox send their more polished players to Great Falls, and the younger, more raw guys to Bristol. So, they tend to be a little overmatched maybe.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 03:26 PM) I would not be surprised if AJ and Peavy didn't like each other. The types of personalities they have, and the run in's they have had for the camera already just scream potential for conflict. Or more simply, Flowers has been looking better lately and they want him to get regular at bats when they can... and DH'ing AJ gives him a partial break.

Slow pitch softball thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Finished our season, the team did pretty badly. And the team started to fray a bit. Might need to find another team. We're a B-level team (A-B-C) in Northbrook, the A teams are very, very good. I have to be honest with myself and realize I don't have the speed and quickness to do much at that high level anymore in 12". I can probably hit there still, and handle playing 1B or something, but I won't be the super-ridiculous bat those guys have at that position typically. So... damn this hurts to say... I turn 40 in December, and I might consider... playing in an Over 40 league. Ugh. I am still an above average hitter in 12" B, and I can hold down 3B, 2B or 1B just fine. Corner OF in a pinch. So I have to decide, if I need a new team anyway, do I play at that same level and be good? Find an A team and be a low guy on the totem pole? Go back to 16", where I can hit well and even pitch pretty well? Or go for the over-40 12" and look like a track star? -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 01:46 PM) I think it's pretty obvious he'll hit below .200 again. But his dingers have been a big plus this year and his RBIs. What is obvious is that Dunn this year is not the same hitter as Dunn last year. But even at his best, he is streaky. He'll get hot again at least one more time this year. I'd bet the over on .200 at this point.

QUOTE (Caesar @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) Judging by the line Vegas has put out and the reverse line movement Vegas is betting the SOx lose tonight. Not a good sign I'd call that next to meaningless. Vegas lines on individual baseball games are such a 51/49 thing, just by the nature of the game.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 02:55 PM) He also gave up on throwing the pitch that made him a high pick after his injury QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 02:55 PM) He was also seemingly never the same after surgery in 2008. I'm guessing these are related. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) Nev is the poster child for "high risk, high reward" High bust rate. He never could get the control figured out. He was also seemingly never the same after surgery in 2008. And this was his 6th year as a minor leaguer, whcih I think means he'd be a minor league FA in a month anyway. This year and last in AA were pretty miserable for him, posting 6+ ERA's, with BB/9 rates of 8.0 and 9.2. -
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Aug 10, 2012 -> 02:57 PM) • Clubs from the same division will be allowed to play one another in either the Wild Card Game or the Division Series. That is interesting.

2012 Minor League Catch All thread

In addition to the Thompson and Hawkins promotions... Nevin Griffith was released, and Brandon Kloess was send down to B-Ham from Charlotte. -
This AAP thread has been cold for a while, so... Trayce was promoted to AA Birmingham yesterday. Sort of a surprise in mid-August to see a significant promotion like that. Could be because of his recent hot hitting, or could be a reward for the work, or could be to make him AA qualified for the AFL. He may return to W-S for their post-season, also. Take a look at his splits and totals: April: .225/.336/.404/.741, 30 K in 89 AB May: .200/.283/.420/.703, 38 K in 100 AB June: .255/.310/.578/.888, 29 K in 102 AB July: .283/.339/.522/.861, 37 K in 113 AB August: .356/.396/.489/.885, 10 K in 45 AB Last 10 games: .400/.442/.55/.992, 8 K in 40 AB Season totals: .254/.325/.486/.810, 144 K in 510 total PA (28.2% K rate) Last season: .241/.329/.457/.785, 172 K in 597 total PA (28.8% K rate) His total season was better than last year all around, and he had been getting better as the year went on. K rate is still high, but trending the right direction. Also, while I don't know the detailed defensive metrics, he has 5 errors this year, versus 9 last year.

Tough 4 game series in a place the Sox have stunk it up... but TOR is down, and this is a late summer series, not early like most. A split is OK, but taking 3 of 4 would be fantastic.

Is Smokey riding his big boys too hard?

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 10:58 AM) I believe Porcello leads all MLB pitchers in errors this year with 5 I hadn't even looked at the pitchers, but yeah, Detroit is just not a good defensive team. -
Kind of a surprise, this late in the season. I figured they'd keep Trayce in A+ for their playoffs. Then again, maybe this is done in part so that Trayce is AA-qualified for a slot in the AFL (I think there are limits as to how many players below AA can be in the AFL). Hawkins was seemingly doing pretty well in Bristol, but it is hard to use stats in that league with such a small sample size to evaluate anything. I assume this means an OF will go from Kanny to W-S as well... probably (hopefully) my AAP Mark Haddow.

Fine by me. But the thing that is realy killing DET, and that I said pre-season I was amazed how few people brought it up... is defense. Defense matters, but people seem to forget that when analyzing teams. Detroit has allowed 33 more UER than the Sox (54 vs 21), allowed 25 more SB than the Sox, turned fewer double plays than all but one team in the AL... and that's not even getting into the fact that DET will allow even more runs with their defense via lack of range at 1B, 3B and other positions where their players suck on defense. They have probably the worst regular defensive players in baseball at three positions. Conservatively, if just in terms of errors they are allowing 33 more UER than the team they are chasing, given the lack of range at so many positions, I'm guessing the've given up just as many runs earned but defensively causedas well. That would be 66 runs, which is more than half a run EVERY GAME. If DET just misses the playoffs, or just misses the division, you can look at defense as the difference maker. -

Looks like the Southern League is starting to figure out Shoemaker. Should be interesting to see if he can adjust. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 12, 2012 -> 06:32 PM) Mitchell kinda stinkin' up the joint in Charlotte. Sure seemed like he wasn't ready for a promotion, so not a surprise he is struggling. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Aug 12, 2012 -> 07:25 PM) Bristol is quite the explosive team. Speaking of which... why has Courtney Hawkins barely played in August?
