QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 10:12 PM) Beat me to it So, who goes to the pen and who comes up? My guess is Mitchell comes up as a pinch run, O-Dawg becomes primary IF backup, and Floyd or Humber is traded. Kinda dount they pick up an outfielder at this point. My wild guess is Johnson or Jackson come up, Hudson is skill position IF backup. Though that means Beckham is the backup SS, which is maybe scary with Alexei hurt.

Multiple sources now, saying Sox announced it. I think its real. Fantastic move for value, Hernandez was likely not anything special, and Escobar is a utility guy. Awesome. Great week for the Sox.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:16 PM) Ster-oids *clap, clap* His profile sure screams that. Had that suddenly gigantic increase in power in AAA, and first year in the majors... then the new drug testing came out, and he's fallen off to being awful.

SOX GAMETHREAD: TAKING YU DOWN FOR THE 4 COUNT

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:30 PM) “@MDGonzales: De Aza cf, Youkilis 3b , Dunn dh, Konerko 1b, Rios rf, Ramirez ss, Viciedo lf, Flowers c, Beckham 2b, Sale p” AJ out at least one more game, but Youk is back. I guess that's half good news. -
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 03:07 PM) The requested package is too high in my opinion I agree, from what I have heard MIL wants. That's why I said, if the other teams are walking away, maybe MIL blinks and comes down on it a bit. I think they are really making a mistake if they don't move him, and get nothing for him at end of season. Just getting, say, Floyd, Mitchell/Thompson and Jones/Santiago, is a lot better than nothing. Its also better than a comp pick. I think things are going to get crazy around Sunday or so.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 02:56 PM) Just like how many have argued this is a career year for Dempster, Greinke's fantastic CY season looks like a career year as well. He's never come close to matching that season. Dempster is incredibly underrated on here if you're looking for a 10 game stretch run from a pitcher. If I'm a big market GM looking to upgrade for a playoff run, I'd rather have Dempster than Greinke (assuming Demp would be willing of course). It is about this year, Dempster is better this year, and he's not a head case. This all said... if others are leaping off the Greinke ship, maybe KW can slip in and get it done for less than some of the reported packages.

LOL, the Yankees aren't even an option in the poll? Not to mention this subject is so insanely subjective and variable from person to person that there really is no substantive discussion to be had. Wins? Titles? Penants? Attendance? Ballpark experience? Cost to attend games? Fan treatment in general? Personalities? Hall of Famers and great players? Uniforms?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 02:17 PM) That's the way to look at it. I guess we would know how valuable or invaluable he is if he went on the DL. I'm not sure where people get that he can play plus defense at three positions. All scouting reports were that, at SS, he'd be average at best, probably not even that. He was pretty darn good at 3B. But 2B is the only position he's shown, so far, to be truly plus defensively.

YOUR FIRST PLACE CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Detroit may have a cake walk the last couple weeks, but the Sox schedule in August/September, for the most part, is very favorable as well. They play Minny and KC a bunch, and CLE as well. -
2012 Minor League Catch All thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 12:33 PM) Before Beck added all of the muscle and regressed, teams were looking at him at a top 10 pick in the entire draft. I didn't disagree with you. Just adding color on the Bellamy talk. -
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 12:18 PM) The signing of Cole Hamels on Wednesday to a six-year, $144-million contract was great news for Phillies fans. But for Mariners fans, it was an ominous development. Not that anyone thought locking up Felix Hernandez was going to be cheap. Not when in April, the Giants' Matt Cain signed an extension for six years and $127 million. But the Hamels' signing is just another reminder of what sort of commitment -- financial, and in years -- it's going to take for whomever winds up signing Hernandez to his next deal. Because here's the bottom line: Hernandez is arguably better than both those pitchers, not to mention almost every other one in MLB. And in 2015, when he starts his next deal, Hernandez will turn 29 in April -- the same age Hamels will be next year when his deal kicks in. Right now, of course, there is considerable debate over whether the Mariners should trade Hernandez, perhaps as soon as next week's non-waiver deadline. But perhaps the more pertinent debate is whether it would be wise for the Mariners to give Hernandez the contract he has coming to him, by virtue of established industry standards and his own body of work. Because, obviously, the two debates are intertwined. If the Mariners conclude, for whatever reason, that they can't, or won't, re-sign Felix, then it would be incumbent upon them to pursue a trade Mariners are paying Hernandez $18.5 million, and until Monday, were paying Ichiro $17 million. That's $35.5 million out of a total payroll of about $84 million -- 42 percent. History has shown that devoting that much to one or two players is not conducive to building a winning team. But to bring Felix back would likely require, based on the progression of salaries we've seen given to elite pitchers -- Hamels' being the latest example -- a deal that averages at least $25 million a season, almost certainly for at least six years. Would that be wise for a team like the Mariner, who unlike the Yankees or Red Sox, can't afford a whiff on a contract that large? As great as Hernandez has been and continues to be, he has been a workhorse in his six-plus seasons. That's part of what makes him great. But you also have to wonder how much of a toll all those 200-innings seasons will take on his arm. Already this year, we've seen decreased velocity, though it hasn't seemed to affect his performance. But those are legitimate questions to ask as you ponder whether to give out an astronomical contract. And they are questions that have to be answered soon, because with Hernandez's current deal ending after the 2014 season, the time to begin negotiations on an extension -- or ponder the dreaded trade -- are rapidly approaching. 2012 Minor League Catch All thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 10:34 AM) Which means someone at the major league level or Charlotte is getting traded. Maybe. Zaleski is filler and that's it, so, they may just be using him to help manage the other guys' innings. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) At no time was Bellamy ever thought of as a Top 10 pick. He was at one time ranked as high as #12 in the Sox system by FutureSox (in 2010). Surgery in 2011 is what knocked him off the radar. 2012 is a recovery year for him, getting stretched back out. 2013 will be the year that dictates if he still has a major league future. But at this point, he's off the radar, probably in the 30-40 range in the system. -

He's better than any current in-house option. Better than Escobar would be, better than Hudson is at this point in his career. And yeah, I think at some point Beckham will start to hit a lot better. Seemed like he had it in May and into June, then went funky again. If he isn't there in a year or two, then you look at some of the guys in the system who can play there that will have matured a bit (Sanchez, DeMichele, M Johnson, Saladino, etc.).
-
Lots of people suggesting flip trades, but remember, there were rumors back around the time of the EJax acquisition that KW got screwed in between one of those. He may be gun shy, and really, those sorts of things rarely happen and are hard to pull off.
-
With the Cubs getting pretty desperate, I'm starting to wonder if KW is on the phone with Theo today. Maybe not Dempster, but, who knows.
-
Has anyone else pointed out yet that Greinke's ERA on the road is 1.5 runs higher than at home? BAA is about 100 points higher on the road as well? Same thing last year, by the way, ERA about 1.5 runs higher on the road. This may be an effect of his anxiety disorder - he doesn't travel well. And jumping onto a new team for two months in pennant race means almost every game will feel like an away game for him.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) Milwaukee would laugh their asses off at that package. And the KW would do that in a heartbeat. For my money, a package of Santiago, Castro, Rienzo and Petricka is more valuable than, say, Floyd and Jones. Or Floyd and Mitchell. Especially for a team like Milwaukee looking at future years, not this year.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 03:44 PM) NO chance Milwaukee is interested in that package. I'd actually say they would, they are trying to load on pitching talent for the future, not necessarily for today. But it really hurts the Sox.
-
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 03:39 PM) Here's how I would do the deal Greinke to the Sox for Santiago, Castro, Rienzo and Petricka That guts the Sox already-not-that-deep minor league pitching ranks, especially for 2013. Santiago and Castro are in line for possible starting in 2013, maybe even Rienzo. Petricka is fine, don't care there. If you can remove one of the first three in your list, it might be worth considering.
-
Floyd for ZG straight up - love it. Floyd plus a non-Reed young reliever, like maybe Jones - like it. Floyd plus almost any current position player prospect in the Sox minors - probably like it (remember, 2012 picks can't be traded yet). Quintana for ZG straight up, or maybe with some money back - not sure, on the fence. Floyd plus Reed, or Floyd plus Viciedo: don't like it. Quintana plus anything else of value, don't like it.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) Everything I've read projects him to be an average or slightly below average major league middle infielder, especially range and arm-wise. Maybe he can practice and practice and practice like Ventura did and make it into an asset. You sure those weren't talking about him at SS? Where he played originally?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 01:44 PM) Sanchez needs to develop another positive tool. He doesn't have much power and he's not a very good fielder and he's not super fast. That means he has to hit 300+ and take a ton of walks to compensate for all of his other weaknesses. What makes you think he is a "not very good fielder"? Because the reports I've read say the opposite.
