Petricka struck guys out but otherwise struggled. Griffith was just terrible, I wonder if he's done. On the offensive side, Short with a mostly impressive line, except that he struck out 32% of the time. Saladino hit for average, drew some walks and made so-so contact (22% K rate), but showed no power. Blanke struggled a bit, and left early, and no one seems to know why.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 08:19 AM) My excitement for the off-season is a 7. I feel like there will be some moving & shaking with the roster, and I can't wait to see how it breaks down. For the actual 2012 season, I'm at about a 2.5 right now. They aren't gonna add a Pujols/Reyes type player, and the hoping for turnaround seasons from Dunn/Rios/Beckham worries me now. That's pretty much me as well. Pretty psyched for what goes on in the next month or two, not so much about 2011, but that could change later.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 04:35 AM) FWIW, Valverde was 2nd in the AL in WPA, first among closers. Only David Robertson had a higher WPA. Valverde also led the league in shut downs (saves or good appearances in close game situations) with 38. His 5 meltdowns were the second lowest for a closer. So Valverde really did have a great season if you view things from a win probability perspective. His peripherals were far from excellent though. Which probably means he won't repeat what he did this past year. I am sure he won't, not just because of the odds, but because I think he was unusually lucky (which is what you are getting at I think). His stuff was good, but didn't look as good as the perfect save % made it seem.
  4. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 12:49 AM) Well the upset isn't happening, but I will not root for it anyway, as I don't want any part of an LSU/Alabama or LSU/Oregon rematch. Let's see this Okie St/LSU game if they get by Okla. You never know. I saw the game in '92 when a much worse ISU team (They were something like #101 out of 107 Sagarin going in) beat a Top 5 Nebraska team, 19-10, and did it with a QB who had never started a game in his collegiate life. Not likely, but, stranger things have happened.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 02:04 PM) Anywho, back onto MF. I hadn't realized the sweep rules were that open-ended. I thought it only covered Money Market, US Treasury debt and cash-for-cash. Leaving foreign obligations in there may have been intended as a way to allow international customers to have their own nation's "safe" debt, but that is highly dangerous to leave it open as such.
  6. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) 3/$39 million with an option for a fourth year. A creative contract like Konerko's would be nice to save some money up front until a bad contract or two goes away. That's pretty much what I had earlier, I agree. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) I hope that goes for all Sox fans. What I don't understand is if Buehrle signs elsewhere, why they would want to trade those pitchers as well. They have an opportunity to compete and hopefully catch lightning in a bottle with the pitching staff they have now. If it doesn't happen, the Sox will have plenty of attractive pieces to sell off next July--Floyd, Danks, Crain, Thornton, maybe Peavy. It just doesn't seem very Kenny-like to blow it all up now. Trading Danks and/or Quentin isn't about re-signing MB, although that could be a nice secondary effect. Danks and TCQ are free agents after 2012, and if we aren't going to extend them, it would be a good time to get something in return. And if you do that, and clear salary space, then it would be great to have Mark back at the right price. You can't look at signing MB by itself, it is part of the puzzle. And at the deadline, I think those players will get less return than they do right now. I'll admit though, I am also biased in that I think Mark at his money/years is a better investment than Danks at the money/years he would receive in an extension.
  7. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 10:05 AM) I wonder what the voter turnout would be for a Cain - Obama election. I don't know, but I'm willing to bet Obama wins it in a landslide. The Republicans only have a shot at the Presidency if they nominate Romney or Gingrich. Anyone else, its over before it starts.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 09:47 AM) And I believe a few lawyers said there werent any tax reasons. You have to admit its a bit of a coincidence that he did this after being interviewed by a Grand Jury about this mess. The guy didnt just turn old this year, he has been old for awhile and this could have happened at an time, why now? I'm not saying one way or the other, I honestly don't know. Just pointing out one possible reason.
  9. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 09:33 AM) If the property is jointly held with survivorship rights, it legally passes at the moment of death to the wife. All you do is send the death certificate to whoever holds the records to make it official on the books. It would be far easier not to sell it. But there are also sometimes tax reasons, not related to death and estate, that you want assets in the name of one or the other.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 08:58 AM) Posting for no other reasons than, A) it made me laugh and B) the conversation yesterday about fighting celebs. BSLillibridge Brent Lillibridge Who wants to arm wrestle at Soxfest? #Competitivetweet #workingoutmakesmestrong I think he should arm wrestle the poster named Soxfest, at Soxfest.

Also, the board is very low in ranking of member #'s (2139th), but very high in posts per member (92nd). Loyal following.

Hm. By posts, we are the 870th largest board they track (they claim to track the busiest ones on the web anywhere, tracking about 3000 of them), right behind Jehovahs Witness. Although it is interesting to see that SoxTalk may be on the way up. If you sort by Posts Last Week, SoxTalk is ranked 312th. Right behind Avril Lavigne Bandaids.
  13. I think a 3 year deal with a 4th year option, paying out around $13-$14M/year, will get it done for the Sox, maybe less money even. Might need to be a mutual option. Other teams may offer slightly more than that, such as a guaranteed 4th year or another $1M per year or something. But if the Sox offer what I stated here, I'd bet Mark stays, unless some team makes him an absurd offer (like 5 years, and/or more than $15M per).
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 08:28 AM) SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman Some folks saying buehrle won't fit in #chisox budget and will be gone unless owner reinsdorf intervenes Which he might. I still think that if KW can indeed make a few moves soon, he'll make a decent offer to MB and he'll be likely to stay. But the moves to get rid of some salary have to come first.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 07:59 AM) Both a casual slip-up line by the mayor of Oakland and now leaks from the Feds are suggesting that the FBI and DHS have taken the lead in coordinating/organizing the crackdowns on the OWS camps. Link to Minneapolis Examiner article. 1. If you read the article, it seems clear that they are neither organizing nor coordinating the crackdowns. Says it quite clearly, but I suppose that doesn't fit your narrative. 2. I fail to see the problem with local law enforcement asking for advice from the feds here. Occupy movement is national, lots of cities are dealing with it, seems only smart to me to talk to the feds and with other cities to come up with the best ideas possible to handle things.
  16. QUOTE (danman31 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 12:06 AM) LOL Heads this was the first and last time I listen to you on betting advice. General rule in Vegas is if you think you're missing something, you probably are. I was thinking this last night every time I looked at the score... I guess they knew something I didn't. Which is weird, because... its friggin Drake.
  17. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 01:22 PM) Drake lost to Quincy in an exhibition and just beat Upper Iowa by like 18. Then yeah, I'd bet the house on ISU. Not that Iowa State looks all that great yet, seems like they are still figuring each other out. But that's why you plan teams like Lehigh and Drake early on.
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 01:17 PM) I was speaking of regulatory space in general, not specifically in finance. Well sure, breaking into the nuclear plant business is going to have IMMENSE regulatory hurdles, in addition to lots of technological and capital ones.
  19. Glad no morons put Sabathia first. No surprises in the voting. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 01:11 PM) jaysonst Jayson Stark Found it fascinating that Jose Valverde finished 5th in AL Cy Young. No blown SVs but among AL relievers with 50+ IP, he ranked 19th in WAR! WAR is maybe not a great measure for closers. No way anyone in their right mind would have rather had 18 closers more so than Valverde last year.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) Setting up a large-scale compliance apparatus is an expensive startup cost. Simply figuring out the regulations and the proper compliance is a hurdle. Regulation isn't as huge a hurdle as you are making it out to be. Especially for smaller firms trying to edge into trading or brokerage. The bigger hurdles are capital requirements, and the good ol boy networks in place. Regulation is scalar-plus in relation to firm size in finance. The bigger you are, the regulatory and compliance costs go up at a greater rate than the overall size of your firm.
  21. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 12:09 PM) So........Iowa State is 2.5 point favorites at Drake tonight. If you're a sports better, that's gotta be an intriguing line. ISU beat Drake in Ames by 48 last year, and won in Des Moines by 20 two years ago. Is Drake maybe looking better than their usual selves? I don't know anything about their team, but maybe they are seen as being tougher this year.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 12:54 PM) That is sure what it seems like. But the language will never be "Person X committed fraud," it will be "fraud was committed." It's pervasive. That just isn't true. A significant firm went down, people will end up being prosecuted, count on it.
  23. Changing it in the middle of the offseason? That is just a horrible idea. Seriously, that is just incompetent.
  24. Lots of teams may have interest, but that doesn't mean they are willing to overpay either. I think there are concerns about velocity, and about age. We'll see though, I could be wrong.
  25. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 11:11 AM) It may be smarter than extending Danks, but it still doesn't mean it's a good move. I really want Mark back, but at 4 years, $60 million? No thanks. He won't get that kind of money. He won't even get the 4/56 he got in the last contract, I'm willing to bet. And I'm also willing to be he'd come back to the Sox for a little less than other offers he might have. Not a LOT less, but a little.
