  1. The worst case scenario here isn't that the team will lose a bunch more games - because that would cause action. Nor is it that the team gets red hot, because its still early enough that such a run could put them right back in it. The worst case scenario is that the team gets a little better. Better enough that no changes are made, but not better enough to get competitive again. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) I saw that on the Score's stupid texts facebook page. What exactly is the rumor? Ryno to manage the Sox?
  2. QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 4, 2011 -> 12:56 AM) This is what happened to my brother-in-law in his own words, my wife is the older sister he refers to... Thank you so much for posting that, that's amazing. Also, I believe that Raja Ed Downtime may be the most awesome name I've ever seen.
  3. QUOTE (danman31 @ May 5, 2011 -> 12:29 AM) Both day games today. Jon Gilmore back on the DL for the Barons. Can we please have someone step up in the minors this year? Rienzo, Reed and Petricka have done well, but they're still just in A ball with question marks. Gilmore and Saladino hurt. Short, Phegley, Mitchell, Flowers, Danks, Wilkins and even Viciedo are off to slow starts. Ugh. Something good happen this year! I'll point out again, Infante and Remenowsky both looking awfully good in B-Ham. QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 5, 2011 -> 01:01 AM) Gilmore was hit by a pitch on the hand that he had hurt in ST. In his first game back? Well that sucks.
  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) Its not a false argument. We could simply rebuilt our team with our own players if we not only drafted talent, but were able to consistently groom players within our system. If we had an actual teaching method we would be able to plug fundamentally sound players already versed in how the big team plays at least once in awhile. Instead we are forced to sign or acquire players from other teams to try and plug holes, which clearly hasnt been working most of the time. The organization as a whole has no direction, no philosophy, and pretty much no immediate hope of success. Thats grounds for a CEO to get fired by his board, and KW is the CEO of this organization. First of all, here is something you and others are failing to acknowledge... most teams get most of their talent from other teams. That's the nature of the game. The few teams who truly get a majority internally are usually the low payroll teams that are far less successful than the Sox. If you want to be the Royals, go ahead. I'd rather not. And you have no clue about any sort of direction or philosophy within the organization. Neither do I. So that's just a silly thing to even discuss. Why bother?
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:49 PM) You don't think Peavy and Rios are bad contracts? Peavy might have surpassed Zito as having the worst contract in the majors. I feel like you're confusing activity with achievement, as he's really hurt this organization by going "all in" with a roster that had flaws and sacrificing the future after this season. Peavy? No, I don't. No one could have possibly begun to predict his freakish injury. Rios? Maybe. Jury is still out on that one.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:46 PM) Most of that is because we dont have the players in our system to fill holes. So, you blame the players who don't make the majors for the mistakes that the guys who do make it make? That makes zero sense. As a fully seperate argument from your false one about fundamentals, certainly, the farm sucks. But that's not a result that matters - that's an institutional risk. And if he can prove consistently that it doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter. So who on this roster would you replace with a minor leaguer, even a very good one? Unless you are one of these people who thinks there is such a thing as a can't miss prospect (which does not exist), the answer is basically none. And if your argument is that they wouldn't have to sign these big contracts as a result, I'll say again... show me the bad contracts. Show me the supposed albatross contracts this team has, that KW signed. Teahen is bad, but its one more year at a relatively low number. Ohman was overpaid. Who else? Rios as an acquisition maybe? KW isn't the problem here, at all. He's succeeded, as far as I am concerned.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:45 PM) How has he done a great job? We used to pride ourselves on having no bad contracts. Now, we have a handful of guys you couldn't even give away. He built a roster that by all accounts has plenty of talent to go to the post-season. That's his job, and he did it, and did it well. He even convinced JR to spend more money than the org really wanted to. He juiced everything he could out of people to make a roster that has the talent to get it done. Seems like a good job to me. And we really don't have many bad contracts, I fail to see where you see that. Teahen extension was stupid, given. Ohman was too much money. Otherwise, I don't see it.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:44 PM) Its not just out major league roster, he's responsible for the entire organization including the minor leagues and scouting. We have no identity, no "White Sox Way" being taught up and down our system. We have players coming up to the majors with poor fundamentals. The players with poor fundamentals are coming mostly from outside the system... because most of the players, period, are coming from outside the system. So I disagree with your sentiment.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:29 PM) Fire Everyone from KW on down. The organization as a whole has had zero direction, zero character, and zero identity. I personally don't see a need to fire KW. I think on the whole he's done a great job. This is not about building a poor roster, at all. Its about living up to talent. That's on the manager, the coaches, and the players, in some combination.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 4, 2011 -> 03:36 PM) Why is Teahen on PH'ing for Omar here? OK, or for Pierre at this point?
  11. Just curious on the current barometer in this forum for coaching changes.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 4, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) This is truly the worst managed team I've seen in baseball in a long time. Terrible fundamentals and strategy all around. This has to be Ozzie's last game. I'm pretty much done with Ozzie at this point myself. Not because the offense isnt' hitting, that's not his problem. But because of the stupid f***ing fundamentally awful coaching, plus his side show distractions. I've officially jumped off the Ozzie train.
  13. I'm usually not a guy to go all stupid and overreact, but I really have to say, its pissing me off that the Sox are trying to steal at such a high rate. Its obviously, painfully, not working. I think the great majority of players are either no good at it and should never try it, or, be pure opportunists. By opportunists, I mean, if you see that the pitcher or defense is clearly falling asleep on you, and/or a catcher is struggling mightily, then sure, steal the very occasional base. Then there are the 5% of players good enough at it to make it a strategic part of their game plan... but even in their cases, they need to see when they are not getting it done and dial it back. This f***ing Ozzie-ball, stealing for the sake of stealing all the damn time, is just plain stupid. They are giving away way too many runners. Time to tell the whole team to just dial it back to near-zero for the time being, or just do a few hit-and-runs, until they can slowly warm back up into it.
  14. QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 2, 2011 -> 09:11 AM) He was put on the DL before the season started, he's probably out in AZ with the other players in extended. Interesting. He was on the 7-day DL but hasn't played yet. Also, the other team rosters show DL players, but his name doesn't appear. Maybe they haven't assigned him to a team yet.
  15. Excellent. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 2, 2011 -> 09:28 AM) WOW! Apparently the US got all of the computers/hard drives in the compound. THat's a HUGE blow to Al Qaeda Yeah, that is definitely huge. I agree with SS2K5, that might turn out to be bigger then getting the man himself. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 2, 2011 -> 10:50 AM) Maybe he was feeling/looking good because he was the one who actually pulled the trigger. That is friggin awesome.
  16. So, Garrett doesn't appear on any roster in the system, and his profile on MiLB shows no results for this year. I think he may be out of baseball. But if anyone knows different, let me know.
  17. April update for D Lucy... well, he's 28, and I think its generally agreed that he's no longer looked at as potential starter material in the majors. Its possible he could be a competent backup however. And he did see more playing time in April than you'd expect for the AAA backup C, with Flowers struggling ahead of him. His April line was .281/.324/.375/.699. No power to speak of (just one of his 9 hits was XBH), decent contact rate. His value if course is his defense, presence and ability to play the position in all facets. With Flowers failing to hit, if one of the catchers in Chicago goes down, I'd have to think Lucy gets the call-up at this point.
  18. Charlie was demoted to start the season, and put int he bullpen for W-S. His first couple outings were abysmal - 2.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. He has improved a bit since then though. His numbers in his next 5 appearances: 8 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. The fact that he was moved to relief wasn't a huge surprise, given that his K numbers had been trending down as he was promoted up through the system, and he seemed to tire as season went on. But being demoted was not a good sign. He'll need to be lights-out in relief and find his was back to AA soon if he's to be considered a significant prospect again, even in this relatively weak system.
  19. First monthly update of 2011... This was a big year for Dan - coming off a significant injury and surgery, he was already under pressure due to his relatively advanced age for level (he just turned 25 this month), and was promoted to AA despite having only a couple months of A+ under his belt. He needed to show he was healthy, and show he could make the big jump to AA and get batters out. I'd say so far he's done that. Here are are his April numbers... 11 IP 3 H 0 R 1 BB 15 K 0.00 ERA 0.36 WHIP .086 AvgA 0.8 BB/9 12.3 K/9 15:1 K:BB Now, obviously, he won't keep up some of those values all season - that would be basically impossible. But if he keeps pitching even close to this well, it would be a surprise if he didn't see Charlotte some time this season.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2011 -> 01:49 PM) There is my biggest problem right there. I hate the state and federalization of education. It drives me crazy. Mostly agree. The local schools are now heavily dependent on non-local funding, which is a problem all around. State is a little different though, I think schools particularly in poor areas need support to level the playing field funding-wise. Alternately, you re-do the whole funding system state-wide towards that end. But the Feds' role in education should be only to provide: --Basic skills standards, as a purely advisory role --Safety and regulations around schools to ensure all schools are a safe environment at the basic level (safe buildings, basic security, health standards, etc.) All else should be state and local, mostly local. The schools, the students and the government will all be better off this way.
  21. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 29, 2011 -> 01:06 PM) As all-time bad as the tornado outbreak in the south was, and as much as I expected many fatalities with several tornadoes hitting metro areas, I'm a little surprised the number is up to 300 now. Are there just not many basements/storm cellars in the south? First, many homes in the south don't have basements. Second, have you seen the pictures of the damage? I'm amazed the toll isn't higher.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2011 -> 01:03 PM) Improvement rates would be the biggest way. In general, I think that is a terrible idea to use a standardized test to judge how good of a teacher someone is. I support evaluations being done by in-building administration, just like any other job would be done. I agree with this. The school is a business or an office in many ways, and evaluation of staff should be handled the same way. Heck, do some 360's even. Test scores can be a part of that, but I also agree that improvement should be what is looked at.
  23. Time for some home cookin' against a couple struggling teams. Slump buster. *cough* *cough* GO YOU WHITE SOX!!!
  24. Combined stats of the back end pair in the B-Ham bullpen (Infante and Remenowsky) so far this season... 15.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 18 K (0.30 WHIP, 0.00 ERA, .127 AvgA, 1.1 BB/9, 11.6 K/9) That'll work.
