  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2011 -> 02:55 PM) Seriously. You guys ought to know by now I'm one of the positive ones, and generally tend to defend the team. This is f***ing asinine and ridiculous. 100% agreed.
  2. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 19, 2011 -> 02:07 PM) This is exactly what I was going to say. It's a good thing you said it first, because I would have probably gotten flak for being such a downer by pointing it out. I only gave you a hard time about the chances of some random injury, which I think Peavy is no more at risk of than anyone else. But specific to his injury is something else - we need to see that he's fully normal from that.
  3. I don't think this team should make any trades, at least not right now. The two biggest weak points I see are T-Pain and Pierre. In both cases, we have good in-house options in the minors to replace them. If you can get something for them in trade, great. If not, just let them go. I really do think Beckham and Rios will turn it around. The 6 pitchers is a great asset, but until Peavy pitches a little longer and we know he's really back to full strength, I'd hold onto them. If the team is in contention at deadline time, then you can look at trading pitching for something of need (whatever that is at that point).
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 19, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) Let me make this simple for you... If the US defaults, it doesn't matter if you sold or not. The difference would be having a bunch of worthless paper vs wishing you had sold so you could have a bunch of worthless paper. Don't sell on fear, that's what the suckers do. It doesn't matter what the asset is worth now, or during a depression, it matters what it's worth when you sell it. People never seem to learn from the past. I don't know how many times I've seen the market crash and hear people say the era of the stock market is over...only to see it recover again...and again. Imagine if you were one of the suckers that panicked in 2008 and sold before you "lost everything" because some "financial manager" told you too get out before it's too late...instead of just waiting a few short years (if that), and being right back where you were (or very close too it), in 2007. The market, be it stocks, bonds, or commodities, are not for the feint of heart...if you look at your portfolio everyday and say damnit, I just lost X...it means you're doing it wrong. You didn't lose X unless you sold it, so long as you didn't, just wait...if it's a viable asset, it WILL recover in time. The good news is, we are all pretty young, and we have time. I think I said that.
  5. For those who think DET is the team to beat, here is something to consider... the Sox are only 4 games behind them now.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2011 -> 07:45 AM) How the Hell does that make a player a "fraud"? Seems he's hinting at some sort of chemical enhancement.
  7. Win the game, win the series in a sweep. Win the series in a sweep, gain 2 games on first place for the series. Its progress.
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 19, 2011 -> 09:51 AM) Rookies beware! While on the other hand, I'm sure the veterans rightfully see this as an empty threat. I don't know, I got the impression that he was indeed talking about Pierre. If Juan continues to struggle, he may get benched or released. Morel is probably on the hot seat too though, and I'd have to think T-Pain as well.
  9. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 19, 2011 -> 09:52 AM) That's why I asked last night if it was fine to do it. Nobody said it wasn't, so I took that as the go-ahead. No big deal, that's why it was just a friendly warning. I wasn't on here last night to respond, others may not have been either. Its fine to talk about Ignoring features, but getting into saying "I ignore these people" really could come off as insulting. I personally wouldn't care, but others might. I guess I'm just saying... use caution.
  10. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 19, 2011 -> 09:24 AM) There you go being all literal again. I was responding to Milk. I think he just meant that JP can go down at any moment and to be forever skeptical. Which I kinda agree with. But Peavy was great last night. I'm going to be positive for now. The chances of Peavy having his elbow blow out is no more or less than any other pitcher.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2011 -> 08:50 AM) I don't know that I am really scared just yet...I just don't want to be the 3rd person who becomes really scared, because the first 2 are going to make out ok, while the rest of the people won't. I'm actually kinda starting to think that nothing will happen in Congress until there is a huge move in the bond market where people do get scared. Might take that kind of fear to shake things loose. And then things get back to basically normal shortly after, so you are back where you started. So again, selling on this type of fear is only smart if you are doing it with the intention of buying again at a lower price.
  12. I wouldn't sell. You have to understand, there are a number of short term things they can do to cover their debt obligations, if Congress goes into a temporary pattern of inaction. Further, the bonds wouldn't become worthless anyway - the US government may just miss a "payment" of interest for some period, a very short one if at all. If the US government starts actually defaulting on the principal obligation on any significant amount its debt, then frankly, none of this matters, because the entire financial market system begins to collapse and there is no longer a safe haven of any kind. That's the disaster scenario, and it won't occur. Then there are the idiots who are holding and hoarding gold for such an event. This is the silliest thing I can imagine, beyond just the fact that the likelihood of a full collapse is insanely low. Buying gold as an investment vehicle is one thing, it makes sense. Buying and delivering is just patently stupid. If things got so bad that the currency collapsed, the country falls into chaos... and what good does that brick of gold do you anyway? Its not a usable good, so it becomes as empty as paper money, unless you want to build some circuits or jewelry or something.
  13. Just a little warning here... let's be careful to avoid telling the world which specific posters you have on Ignore. Might be interpereted as insulting.
  14. Viciedo has been playing OF, particularly RF, almost exclusively this year. And reports have been pretty positive on his play out there. He has also played a bit at 1B. He's really no longer a 3B. Danks' issue was the high K totals, and he started this year with that same problem... but he seems to have made a pretty dramatic shift for the better recently. So keep an eye on him. Flowers is a puzzle. I thought for sure he'd figure it out midway through last year, but he's still struggling. If you want to look at catchers in the system, keep an eye on Phegley, and maybe also Gonzalez and Blanke.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 19, 2011 -> 08:01 AM) Wait, Merkin actually wrote that? That's actually unusual for him, to write something that stinging about the Sox. I read the article and don't see the quote. A reader comment maybe?
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2011 -> 02:41 AM) http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?g...id=mlb#continue Merkin game write-up with lots of good quotes. And Ozzie still wants to manage in the NL and have every game be 1-0, decided on sacrifice bunts/flies, stolen bases and hitting to the right side of the field. He should trade places with Gardenhire, that style is a lot more suitable for Target Field, Safeco, Oakland Coliseum (I refuse to call it overstock.com) or PetCo. Wait, Merkin actually wrote that? That's actually unusual for him, to write something that stinging about the Sox.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 19, 2011 -> 07:54 AM) Link That was a warning to certain players on the team, even though it looks like just a "no comment".
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2011 -> 07:36 AM) I have zero on ignore, and zero have ignored me. Pretty sure that you cannot put Mods or Admins on ignore anyway. Otherwise I would have ignored your tea-partying ass years ago.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2011 -> 07:26 AM) There is a s***-ton of irony there. That's all I'll say right now. Yeah its pretty ridiculous for him to be saying that, given we actually DO make sure articles are credited here, and further that he himself has stolen stuff from here before, and in at least one case didn't take it down even when he was asked to. That said, we should always be careful to credit sources (which the OP did here, so thank you). One other note - FutureSox was invited to this call, but due to the timing and that they didn't contact necessarily the right people, we missed the call. FS does plan to attend future calls.
  20. During a blogger interview with Buddy Bell, someone asked about Rem... From the Buddy Bell interview, on Remenowsky... JM: Dan Remenowsky, we've heard about him as a guy with so-so stuff who just gets it done and his walk and strikeout numbers are insane this year. How encouraged are you by him and how aggressively will you advance him, like say if a bullpen spot opens up on the White Sox 25-man roster? BB: He;s one of the guys that we talk about a lot. He's a kid who doesn't throw 95-96 like Sergio, Infante or Omogrosso. We talk about him because this guy throws 88-89, maybe tops out at 90 on his best day, but what we talk about all the time is that we have to get guys like that to higher levels to see if it's real or not. He's shocked us everywhere he's been. He was an undrafted player, went to Bristol and did well there. We needed somebody in Great Falls, we sent him there, he ended up being the closer. Hey, professional baseball is professional baseball, so when you're doing what he did even in Great Falls, there is something to this There's deception there, there's something going on. Plus he's coming up with an above average changeup. It's realistic to think, and you don't really want to put him in a category of a Sutter or a Doug Jones who wasn't overpowering but had great secondary changes in their split and their changeup so a kid like Remenowsky who could hit a gnat in the ass on both sides of the plates to go along with some deception, there is a chance that this kid could be throwing in Chicago and that's wuite a story for an undrafted kid. We're gonna have to figure something out right now, since he's kind of blocked off, and as long as he gets innings that's fine, but at some point we're going to have to get him to another level to see how real this really is. But the hitters normally will tell us this.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 9, 2011 -> 09:56 PM) I'm headed to Denver for 8 days next week for lacrosse and we'll have a lot of down time between games. Any suggestions on things to do or see in the city? I'm thinking about going to a Rockies game on Monday night. Also, where are you staying?

    Denver

I lived in DEN for 2 years, in the mid-late 90's. Been back a bunch of times. Some suggestions... --Best area of town to hang out is LoDo (Lower Downtown). Lots of great bars and microbrews (I recommend Rocky Mountain Tap and its 100+ beers on tap, and the Wynkoop micro-brewery), Coors Field is there, some good restaurants, art galleries, music venues, everything you'd want. Light rail gets you to and from. --Denver area is incredibly sprawled, so careful where you plan to go, and leave time. --A beer recommendation, one of my all time faves, brewed in CO and only available there and in nearby states: 90 Shilling by O'Dell's. --Hidden gem restaurant: Parisi Italian Market and Deli, on the NW side. A real-ish Italian deli and cafe.
  24. Of course, as soon as people start talking about Remenowsky like he should replace T-Pain, he gets rocked. Seems to happen a lot around here, as soon as we "notice" a player.
  25. QUOTE (danman31 @ May 17, 2011 -> 07:08 PM) 6 walks in 55 May ABs for Viciedo. It's almost not worth joking about anymore. Almost. The importance of this shouldn't be understated. For a guy known for lacking plate discipline, to suddenly start drawing walks at an above average rate and still hit well... this is very good to see.
