QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 01:24 PM) As I noted...they're already being done and the impact is very limited. The current efforts are getting 2-3% per year. 2 to 3 %, depending on your total number. Increasing the spending by 33% has still left us in the 2 to 3% range. And of course, none of that takes into account the legitimate economic hit that you'd take by removing people who do spend money here and so forth. Saying that there are low cost ways to remove them is absolute fantasy. Its not fantasy - you are saying that because up to now the small increases haven't had a huge effect, that means that all the methods I mentioned won't work. If you do all of them in concert, they will work, to an extent - and that is all I am saying. No one is suggesting that ANY method will fully fix the problem.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 12:45 PM) It would be easier to oppose amnesty, and I do. It historically does not work. Which leads the other side to state, correctly, that deporting 20 million people en masse is entirely impractical. I think the best solution to this, really, is a combination of very tough enforcement on businesses, federally mandated rules on provision of identification used for any federal purpose, laws disallowing various services to illegal immigrants where practical, and finally, deportation to the extent reasonably possible. Do all those things, and you will make it such that many people will leave on their own, and few new ones will come in. Its not a perfect solution, but its workable.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) The jury has a verdict on only two of the 24 counts and is hung on the rest. Judge sent them back for further deliberations. Trib clarifies - they are sure on 2, deadlocked on some, but have not yet begun deliberating on the wire fraud counts. Judge sent them back out to deliberate those.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 11:41 AM) I'm curious what that factors in. That seems a bit high to me. That's roughly $16,826.47 per year. Is it assuming private schooling? If so, that MAYBE i can see where that might be right since the school my daughters will be attending when they start school is roughly $3200 a year. Jeez, I'd be ecstatic if I was paying only that much for school/daycare. I can't wait until kindergarten starts and we can start using some of that property tax money we've been paying.

Last night was hot, and a slight breeze out, so I expected a slugfest... got just one home run. Tonight might be different. I like the pitching matchup. A win here would be huge.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 10:45 AM) I'd imagine the issue is that on most counts the jury agrees that he's guilty, but on some of the harder counts, the juror(s) holding out don't think there is enough there. That's my guess as well, so he'll end up being found guilty on some counts.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 09:16 AM) I think part of the problem also was that Ozzie buried him when he was hot. Dayan was killing the ball then he didnt play for 3-4 games, got a game in, didnt play. They need to give him more consistent time than that or send him down. His up and in hole is really exposed now, he needs to lay off if he wants to stick in the bigs That's what I've said all along - that Dayan should only stay up until Teahen is back. I just thought Teahen would be back sooner. Viciedo will go down, and come back on 9/1, which should be good. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 08:55 AM) Every so often in this thread we wind up noting when the peak of foreclosure sales is going to wind up being. Eh, they've been saying late 2010 for a while now, early 2011 wouldn't be too far off. The general picture hasn't changed much in the past year, in terms of the approximate timeframe. Sure will be nice to get past that peak though, instead of just being happy about decelerration.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 11:08 AM) Yeah, there's something seriously screwed up going on here. Short call from a cell phone with no callback - they may have had no idea where he was. For one thing, not all PD's are equipped to receive GPS information from E911 cell calls. For another, he may have had GPS turned off or his phone may not have even had it. Who knows though.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) Ames got f***ed. Worse than 93 I was in Ames that summer. Spent some time sandbagging on the Skunk River. That was fun. Not. Is it really worse than that? The national news was in Iowa for like a week in '93 (I mean like, the 6pm NBC news was live from Des Moines), entire towns were wiped off the map, it was the worst flooding they had ever seen, etc.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 12:05 AM) I dont know if its explained in the book, but can someone explain The Road to me. Why were they headed south, why was the family following them, and what exactly happened to make the world go bad? It is intentionally never made fully clear why the world went bad, though in the book, the hints seem to point mostly towards nuclear war. Not sure what you mean by a family following them - I don't recall that from the book (haven't seen the film). South, and more importantly, to the water - that was what kept them going, though I think it was always inentionally unclear as to why exactly they chose that path.

So... Leighton Pangilinan had a nice year last year, he's pretty young still, seemed to be getting a head of steam going in GF... then hasn't played since July 26th. But he's not on the DL. Anyone know what the deal is with him?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 05:22 PM) The jury is currently deadlocked on several issues. Seems like they will probably go guilty on some counts, but not others, when its all done.

The scene in Saving Private Ryan where the American soldier is slowly stabbed to death by the German who was calmly telling him it would be OK in German.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) California a few years ago had a large debate over a proposal to allow illegal immigrants to obtain drivers' licenses...the proposal came about basically because the population of unlicensed illegals who either didn't know the rules of the road or who didn't care to follow them because they were driving illegally anyway was making a complete mess of California's highway system. Plus, it brought illegals into the system by requiring that they also have automobile insurance. The bill was repealed by the current Governor upon taking office. This law passed and stuck in New Mexico.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 02:54 PM) Hate to say it, but the Cubs are down about 2000 tickets a game compared to 2008. The White Sox are down about 4000 tickets/game. Game attendence right now, absolutely. For one, Sox fans tend to be much more aligned on performance than Cubs fans, and this team sucked until mid-June. For another thing, the Sox attendence also tends to follow a weather pattern, and will increase in these next couple months guaranteed. Also, a drop from sellouts to below sellout is more significant than the actual number drop, due to the artificial ceiling. But really, to be clear, I am not saying the Sox are catching the Cubs in terms of fan base any time soon. I'm saying, I think the Sox are doing all the right things and having the stars align to continue to grow (look at the past 5 seasons versus pre-2005 for the Sox), whereas the Cubs are going mostly the opposite direction. Give it 10 years, and you may see things getting pretty equal. Maybe less than that.
-
By the way, just want to add, this is the best discussion we've had in the Buster in a while, IMO. Even with the occasional hyperbole.
-
Cubs continue to have the most expensive tickets in baseball, and have been headed downhill for a few years. That along with the econominc downturn have created a situation where their attendence has been down for 3 straight years. My prediction is that will continue And I'll tell you something else - you see a LOT more kids at Sox games in recent years, and a lot fewer at Cubs games. My guess is the Sox are winning the long run fight right now. See where we're at in 10 years.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:23 PM) And look, it works against other groups too. So, Soxbadger says I'm a racist, and you say I'm fearmongering. Fantastic. I somehow knew you'd try for this ridiculous leap. If you bothered to actually read my posts, I told you why I felt the way I did, and it has zero to do with either fearmongering or racism. But feel free to continue ignorning that and painting me into a corner.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:18 PM) It's pretty much the natural outgrowth of the anti-Mosque movements the Right is feeding around the country. This isn't new - there was fear in this country after 9/11, and shortly after, a significant portion of "the Right" decided that using fear was a great way to get support. So, fearmongering became a major tenet of their marketing scheme. Cheney led the way. And the fear train continues to plow forward.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:15 PM) The American Family Association comes out against construction of any more Mosques. Hey look, idiots!

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) So my buddy and I are planning on arriving at US Cellular around 5 PM. That means we will be able to watching batting practice, right? Gates open for most games 1.5 hours before first pitch, so that's 5:40pm. You will catch visitors' BP, not the Sox.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) I can't believe people are pining for Mark Teahen. Over Kotsay? Heck yeah. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:25 PM) Agree 100%, and I think that's why the discussion is an important one. No one is saying close the borders completely. Well, there is a radical element saying we should indeed close down the borders, or certain borders anyway. Not in this forum though, at least so far. And those are the people who are more likely to be motivated by racism.
