  1. Shirek pulled from his scheduled 6/8 start, no word as to why.
  2. I can't believe there isn't a thread in here for this - I don't even see it being discussed, which is weird. Tectonic shifts going on, BIG 12 may be a gone goose. Nebraska to Big 10, 6 schools to PAC-10, 5 schools who knows...
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 10, 2010 -> 02:01 AM) oh but on the other hand the republicans have done a wonderful job turning around the disaster the created, oh f***, sorry, it's the democrats fault, because the escalating debt dies down immediately once another party takes in power, i forgot. The republicans are amazing, they take into account what real americans (white poor uneducated people) think, in other words, they give white poor uneducated people power when they have none, because despite everything they managed to not do s***, educate themselves, and become wealthy. I believe they are the lowest of the low, but in fact, they are the highest of the high, we should all worship them, because they are white and were born in the rural areas, bastian of morals. I can't figure out what your response has to do with the post you quoted.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) How is there not going to be a 5+ player purging? There's at least 5 guys who won't be resigned next year. PK14, AJP, Jenks, Garcia, Jones, Putz. Kotsay and Vizquel and Castro presumably as well. That's 8 people who either have to be extended or replaced just from free agency. And that's without a single player from the roster being traded. And Hell, I could see Quentin not even being offered arbitration at this point. Not seriously, but you know, kinda. I meant mid-season. I'd be shocked if more than 5 players were traded in-season. Obviously in the offseason, 5+ players isn't unusual.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 07:59 PM) Flowers and Kroeger both 2/3 with HR. Viciedo with, wha? 2 walks? That has to be a mistake. 3 HR in last 4 games for Flowers.
  6. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) "if we do something it will be along the lines of shuffling the deck with the expectation that we're going to add impact guys to win" - KW via Cowley I think that man might be lying to himself. How is it people here don't get this yet? 1. KW doesn't do rebuilding. 2. The Sox realize that they can't dive into a 3-4 year rebuilding expedition, because the fan base won't show up. They retool on the fly, that's what they do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, though the past decade (2000-2009) has been the most successful for any Chicago baseball franchise in the modern era, so it obviously works more often than not. I'm as frustrated as anyone, but everyone should just forget the idea of some huge 5+ player purge and rebuilding exercise. Not happening.
  7. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) This is a tricky one... I went back and forth on it. I'd assume riot gear would have sufficed, so I went with "no". How does riot gear "suffice"? These guys were on foot or bike patrol. They don't carry riot gear around with them. That's not a real option. Besides, would you want to walk around on patrol around El Paso in the summer wearing full tactical gear? Half of them would die of heat exhaustion. The ballistic vests they are probably wearing are bad enough.
  8. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 02:01 PM) Charlie Shirek was scratched from his start today (June 9th). Don't know why, doubtful it's a promotion. He was rolling for a month and a half... then had a bad outing, where he was injured, and went to the DL... came back and looked bad in his return... now scratched from a start. Doesn't sound good at all.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) I thought he was, and for what? It's not illegal to make political deals. Its illegal to offer employment - a senate seat in this case - in exchange for legislative action.
  10. I don't see anything on whitesox.com - where is this contest?
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) Seeing the actions of this administration to try to manipulate races, it could introduce a seed of doubt. All though I have no doubt Blago is about as dirty as they come. ITs certainly all relative. There's dirty politics, there's Illinois politics, and then there's Blago.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:29 PM) If a coyote tries to push a boulder on top of me from a cliff, does that institute deadly force? That would be one Wily Coyote.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) Yeah apparently he's known for doing that. But he makes a good impression. Reports were that he got the jurors attention and even made a few of them laugh. I'm sure it's a bit different than the dry and serious tone the government took. I thought it was interesting that as a defense Adams basically said that Blago used the seat in order to get his Illinois legislation passed. Blago tried to cut a deal with Obama/Rahm to put pressure on Mike Madigan to pass his legislation here at home. As a threat, he said he was going to appoint Jesse Jackson Jr, who the White House knew wouldn't get re-elected. So I guess Rahm calls Mike Madigan and basically says to pass Blago's stuff and he'll appoint Lisa Madigan to the senate seat. The following morning Blago was arrested. The timing seems a little fishy to me. I wonder if the Feds decided to pounce before a grand conspiracy (involving every major Democrat in Illinois and the White House) really got rolling. Lisa Madigan didn't even want that seat. Also doesn't seem like the typical Rahm move - he would have handled that differently, I think. If Rahm did indeed make that call, and it was recorded, he'd be under investigation or headed for trial now.
  14. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) I'm really liking this Griset kid. He's 6-2-195 and check out these this, " Each time Griset would toe the rubber, scouts would wield their radar guns, fixing their aim on the explosive power pitcher. He never disappointed. Griset was named the Western Athletic Conference MVP after posting a 6-3 record with six complete games, a 0.68 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 62 innings. He possesses a plus-fastball that tops out at about 92 mph, a sharp breaking ball and, with the help of CenCal director and pitching coach Mike McNeil, is developing a changeup. More important to his draft stock, Griset added 15 pounds to his lower trunk, which will help give his fastball more speed and movement as he moves forward." Read more: http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2010/06/07/14...l#ixzz0qNUEENfI Wow, kind of surprised he went that deep in the draft, the way they are describing him. Hopefully he signs.
  15. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 12:07 PM) I think your points are more than fair, NorthsideSox. I think given the state of the White Sox organization, right now, and my frustrations with the team, that when I pick up on things like this, I have the tendency to blow them a touch out of proportion (I have a bit of Cowley in me, that disturbs me greatly). Even still, I do think that this is a further example of Ozzie taking his work home with him, and I think the entitlement that seems to have formed around that is a big problem, just perhaps not as big a one as I’ve made it out to be. Fair enough. The Oney stuff bothers me, but I don't pin that directly on Ozzie - Oney is a grown man/baby. And the KW Jr pick bothered me a LOT more than this.
  16. Teh defense has been a circus before the trial, and from what I am reading, the opening statements have continued down that road. The lead defense attorney apparently did a lot of shouting, whispering, fist-pounding, and going off on wild tangents. And by the way, I've had my avatar since his arrest, and pledged to keep it until the case was resolved. I might need a new avatar soon.
  17. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 10:48 AM) Oh, please. If you weren't so busy trying to make this a non0issue, you'd realize that Ozzie actually made a much bigger deal out of this then he needed too. He's trying to have it both ways: express his dissapointment with the Sox and motivating his son. The entitlement alone bothers me. Given that you are taking his quotes that say one thing, and posting that he is saying something else, I'd say its you who wants it both ways. I see zero entitlement in any of his statements.
  18. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 11:17 AM) White Sox take another LHP (Yay!) Robert Young from Dartmouth. Darmouth? Wow, Ivy League. Last I knew, there was only one major league pitcher from an Ivy League school that was currently active.
  19. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 11:30 AM) Ok so it may not be lethal, but would being bombarded with rocks large enough to cause permanent damage to say, your eye(s), be enough justification for retaliation? Or is vision loss not a big enough deal? In other cases that I am aware of, throwing rocks has generally been considered positive justification for deadly force. BUt I am sure there are shades of grey to be considered here. The most interesting aspect of this, to me, is that there is apparently some surveillance video showing Mexican law enforcement officers crossing over to the US side, picking up an object, and bringing it back to Mexico. Coincidentally, there was a .40 cal shell found on the Mexican side near the shooting.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 10:23 AM) If the crowd and the police were close enough that the rocks were actually potentially injurious, this is the actual type of situation the Taser is designed for; a case where deadly force might wind up being necessary but where a less-lethal weapon could be used instead. Tazers have a very short effective range, like 10 feet for it to be of real use. They can go further, but with like zero accuracy.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 10:30 AM) The bigger issue is that Oney is basically calling out Ozzie's immediate boss and ripping on KW Jr. Well that's a different story - Oney is an idiot. We're not talking about Oney, we're talking about Ozzie.
  22. we needed another copy of the exact same poll I created a week ago? Really?
  23. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 10:10 AM) I fail to see how drafting a non prospect in the 22nd round is a slap in the face. Its not, and if you read the article in the Trib today about this, and read Ozzie's quotes, you'll see that Ozzie handled it quite well. He wasn't angry, he wasn't upset with the Sox, etc. T-Bolt brought this up in the FS forum too, and its not reality.
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) I warning shot would have sufficed. They went over the line. Warning shots are not part of any sort of police training, nor should they be. If you fire a gun, it had better be a deadly force situation, because there is no telling where that bullet will land. Remember that behind the target in this case, is the city of Juarez, a dense urban area.
  25. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) Look at this in the greater context of this year, On the 5th of the month, Ozzie said this to Merkin, "I respect the scouts' opinion about how low or how high they have my kid." He would later say to KW "Don't feel any pressure about him being my kid," Ozzie said. "Whatever team out there thinks he's good enough for them, that's fine with me." He would couch that by asking the organization not draft his kid as favor to him but on talent alone. Now on the 8th we get, ""Obviously, it's a disappointment," said the White Sox manager … shortly after his son was selected." Despite, Guillen’s admission to not having talked to “anyone involved with the Draft to see where their projections had Ozney slotted. “ Ozzie felt the need to talk through both sides of his mouth here, "I saw him play, and it surprised me that he [fell] that far before getting picked," Guillen said of his son. "I know baseball a little bit. This kid has a good future as long as he doesn't get hurt. ...” This seems fair to me, he is the kids’ father after all. I’d be disappointed too, but he doesn’t let it lye there, “Twenty-second round? Anybody can go 22nd round," Guillen said. "I respect the scouts' opinion with all my heart. I hope the 20 guys they pick before [Ozney] help us or help the White Sox ... But I'm a baseball man. I saw him play, and I saw him compete against a lot of people out there and I think this kid -- it might help him to improve himself. “ This is an interesting section here. We have Ozzie couching his comments with, "i respect the scouts' opinions" while saying that what they thought about his kid was wrong (in his baseball experiences) He finishes this off with saying that Ozney should use this as an incentive to improve himself. Which is exactly right, and is what he should have been saying all along. “I think the 22nd round in high school doesn't mean anything. I think the White Sox did what I told them ...” Ozzie is trying to say in the most diplomatic fashion possible, that the White Sox scouts were wrong. He'll say later that they pretty much dicked him over. Despite, Ozzie's admission that the White Sox simply did what he told them, he goes on to say that the drafting was a slap in the face, and that he’d pay Ozney the sighing bonus he would have received NOT to sign with the White Sox. Ozzie approached this from two ways, as a good point of adversity for Ozney and as an attack on the Guillen Family, by the White Sox organization. You can’t have it both ways. The only one wanting it both ways is you. Ozzie said absolutely nothing - zero - to indicate he felt this was somr sort of attack on his family as you state, or that it was a slap in the face, etc. Ozzie said beforehand that he felt his son was a strong player who could contribute, but that he respected the scouts' opinions. Afterwards, he expressed disappointment that he wasn't drafted higher, and then reiterated the exact same things. He has been quite consistent, and not inflammatory in the slightest. Your opinions about Ozzie's feelings are not reflected in the reality of that article.
