Hard to describe why, but I really dislike the CF camera angle in this park. I think its maybe too low or something. -

QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 15, 2010 -> 04:19 PM) AJP with a day off against a RHP, after we had a day off yesterday is interesting to say the least. You have to question Ozzie on that one, unless there is something brewing on the trade front, which I doubt is the case. That does seem strange, doesn't it? -

Using my own thread, here is Freddy's career as a hitter (through 2009): 12-58 (.207/.230/.241/.471), 2 2B, 19 K, 13 Sac -
Each season I have posted this, but forgot to this year. So here it is - a look at how all White Sox pitchers have fared in their careers as hitters... Mark Buehrle: 4-40 (.100/.122/.175/.297), 1 HR, 1 BB, 21 K, 7 Sac Jake Peavy: 73-405 (.180/.220/.235/.455), 2 HR, 1 3B, 14 2B, 18 BB, 116 K, 45 Sac Gavin Floyd: 2-46 (.043/.043/.043/.086), 0 BB, 26 K, 3 Sac John Danks: 1-10 (.100/.182/.100/.282), 1 BB, 5 K, 1 Sac Freddy Garcia: 12-58 (.207/.230/.241/.471), 2 2B, 19 K, 13 Sac Bobby Jenks: never hit JJ Putz: never hit Scott Linebrink: 4-18 (.222/.222/.278/.500), 1 2B, 0 BB, 10 K, 2 Sac Matt Thornton: 0-1, K Tony Pena: 1-7 (.143/.143/.143/.286), ) BB, 2 K, 0 Sac Sergio Santos: never hit Randy Williams: 0-1 So... Freddy, Jake and Linebrink seem to be our best hitting pitchers.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 06:26 PM) The Big 12 now HAS to look at expansion to get back to 12, even if they don't actually add. Have to look at BYU, Utah (even though they might very well be gone), Air Force, Arkansas, Memphis and Louisville. I'd add TCU to that list, and maybe New Mexico. -
Flowers 5 HR in his last 7 games. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 10:01 PM) Pretty hard thrower is Threets...used to throw 98 mph before injury. Threets another scoreless inning, ERA down to 0.79.

The article doesn't even get Ozzie's sons right, so I am still skeptical. That said, more and more of this noise has been hitting the wires. Its certainly possible there is fire there. Ozzie needs to go.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 01:42 PM) There's no way in hell this team is capable of sweeping a three-game series against Pitt. Let's not be ridiculous - this is Pittsburgh. Any team in baseball is CAPABLE of sweeping them. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 01:26 PM) Yeah, well, one is dead. Yeah, the one who started the problem with an assault. See how it can be seen either way? I haven't expressed a definite opinion on this, because I don't think we have enough information to know.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 12:50 PM) Right, and I don't believe that exporting valuable metals is going to improve the life of the average Afghan. I believe it will make it worse, and I point to centuries of foreign exploitation and internal corruption of poorer countries as evidence. I give up.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 12:28 PM) I'll spare citing a bunch of colonial industrial accidents* and how terrible they've made certain areas and just say that I disagree. I think there are very real negative potentials for this for the general Afghan population, including dangerous working conditions, near-slave-labor, and completely destroyed environmental areas (including water sources). *I don't mean colonial-era, but the practice of corps going in similar to a colonial power and exploiting the local population and resources to their own detriment. Can you cite any situations where average citizens in under-developed countries benefited from resource development? As far as I can tell, it always results in corrupt governments staying corrupt and the wealthy ruling class staying the wealthy ruling class while causing massive environmental damage. OK, I'll try this one more time, then I give up. I am NOT saying it won't have negative consequences. I am NOT saying they won't be big. I am saying you cannot look at it in a vacuum - you have to compare it to the current situation. Without this, you have a country whose only significant export industry is an illicit drug, versus that illicit drug AND valuable metals for commercial use. That is the only comparison worth looking at here.

The statements being thrown around in here from the extremes are pretty absurd. Its not possible to really know if this was justified or not, with what little information we have. The attitudes towards both law enforcement AND the teenager are pretty crass.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 10:22 AM) It's just the fact of that streak that guarantees that the sox will break it. The Sox always do it. Remeber the year Baltimore started out the season with a 20 some game losing streak? Yeah I was gonna say, an 8 game losing streak seems incredibly unlikely to go to 11. Let's hope this one goes to 11. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 08:08 AM) As bmags pointed out, I think we have far more instances of natural resources being exploited at the expense of the local populace rather than to the benefit. That, and mining is pretty terrible environmentally and I can't imagine the Afghans enacting strict environmental or workplace safety regulations. I think you guys are missing my point. Of course there will be exploitation. My point is, there will be that for poppy OR minerals, but minerals will put more legally obtained money in more people's hands, and provide more jobs that are not as slavery-like, that you get in the poppy industry there. Its not some great thing - but its an improvement.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 14, 2010 -> 06:30 AM) I have a feeling that this won't end well for the poor people of Afghanistan. Not that the current or previous paths were any good... You know, believe it or not, I think this offers a better path than what they have now. As it stands, the corruption is already there, and all the s***ty cultural dynamics between the tribes... except their cash cow is opium. You are really just replacing some of that, long term, with minerals. Minerals will be extracted by mining companies. Yes, they will exploit people. But there will also be large sums of money, and jobs, in the country, in a generally legal enterprise. This is an improvement.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 13, 2010 -> 09:08 PM) Mineral wealth has a habit of being as large of a corrupting influence as anything in a state these days. Eh, the corruption is already there, that's not going to be the new aspect.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) I'd go Putz, he's worked 1 inning since the 6th. I didn't realize he was that short on work, that would work too. But I'd love to have all of Putz, Thornton and Jenks fresh for future games. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) Who gets the 9th? I'd go with Thornton...but it will probably be Linebrink. Thornton has worked a lot, I'd go Linebrink, with a 5 run lead. Its one inning. If it gets interesting, then break out the big guns. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) It is embarrassing that Randy Williams is still a member of this team. Erick Threets has thrown 6 scoreless innings since returning from the DL, at Charlotte. If the Sox win a few more and there is any blood in the water, he'll be up. -

QUOTE (vandy125 @ Jun 11, 2010 -> 02:38 PM) Looks like AZ is taking another step in the illegal immigration battle Illegal Immigrant's Kids Denied Citizenship Not sure how it would ever pass off as constitutional, but there it is, a law to not allow citizenship to kids that are born in the US but have illegal immigrant parents. Not only is it not Constitutional, Arizona doesn't even have legal standing to decide citizenship in any form. This is completely for show, and what a stupid show it is. -
