  1. Holy Dan Hudson! And I sure do like me some Brady Shoemaker.
  2. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 04:19 PM) This kid has an unhealthy obsession with Chocolate Milk. From his bio: PERSONAL: Born in September of 1988... son of Roger and Debbie Murray... brother Greg played baseball at Pacific (2007-08)... goal for the season is to help the team as much as possible... thinks the best thing about being a student-athlete is priority registration and the free showers and soap... chose USF because of the coaches, it is close to home and has great weather... would like to be the Nesquick Bunny for a day so he could drink chocolate milk all day... lists Kobe Bryant as the most impressive person he has ever met... would like to backpack around the West Coast after graduation... favorite sports hero is Greg Maddux... favorite movie is Big Daddy... favorite book is Mental ABC's of Pitching... favorite musical artist is Bob Marley... favorite food is chocolate milk... hobbies include ping pong and drinking chocolate milk... majoring in Environmental Studies. OK, I changed my mind on my AAP from this draft - I want THIS guy. LOL @ free showers and soap. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 09:33 PM) So, it turns out that Ozzie actually was really upset that Ozney fell. This coming from a guy who said that we shoudn't draft the kid as a favor to him. It's not a surpise to see how his children behave, when he himself acts like a hypocritical child. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/...-usf-bound.html If you actually read the article, you'd see that... QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 9, 2010 -> 08:00 AM) Did you read the article? Ok, his son was drafted about 10 rounds later than they, and many scouts, thought he might be. That's understandable they'd be a little disappointed. How inflammatory! Seriously, what is wrong with that statement? Disappointment does not equate to anger. He even admits to people having varying opinions. As is the case with a lot of young players. Seriously, what is with this getting pissed off just for the sake of getting pissed off lately. (I'm not saying it's just you btw.)
  3. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) Oh, i don't think Ozzie will be hurt or anything. I just would have thought that word would have gotten out to the family for them not to hold their collective breaths. They may have told Ozzie what their plan was - in fact I bet they did. Doesn't mean anyone told Oney, or that if they did, that Oney cared to listen.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 03:52 PM) It's very interesting to me that the Sox clearly didn't come out and tell the Guillen family that they wouldn't draft Ozney. Oney is clearly waiting for it to happen. If we don't end up taking him, this could get very interesting. You keep projecting Oney onto Ozzie. Yes they are close, yes they will share some views. But Oney is a different animal than Ozzie, from what I can tell. Oney can be pissed all he wants, and he will be, but I'm willing to be that Ozzie doesn't make a huge deal of it.
  5. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) So we have yet to take a catcher or an OF yet? That's amazing. No catcher yet? the poster girlslikebaseballandlongusernames will be very happy. Blackwood should get some playing time.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 03:22 PM) It sure sounds like the actual attempt to build a clean energy economy is going to get stripped out of any energy bill that goes before the Senate this year. So NSS and others, your grand bargain, where we give up enormous amounts of money to coal, nuclear, and oil interests in order to buy them off so that they won't complain too much about cap and trade of CO2 emissions is likely to be replaced by giving enormous amounts of money to coal, nuclear, and oil interests, so that they won't be too mad if we give much less money to renewable energy companies. Let's see what happens in the bill that gets passed. If there is little or no work done on alt energy, I'll be upset.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 03:34 PM) A .566 winning percentage would have won 2 divisions last year. That's basically the Rockies winning percentage last year. That's really good. That's a 92-70 average record over 162. That's because the AL is better. Never said otherwise. I just think its silly to point to someone going from Cy Young level to really bad, or vice versa, and say that's how much better the AL is. It makes no sense. If the difference was that big, the WPct would be absurdly high, like .800 or .900, and no pitcher could ever go NL to AL and not end up being released. That's obviously not the case.
  8. Looked it up - .566 AL vs NL in the past five complete seasons, goes down to .530's if you go to 10 years. This year so far, the NL is actually winning (in an admitedly small scale): .476.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) Completely disagree with you Results say otherwise. Seriously, what is the AL win pct vs NL the past few seasons? I don't recall off hand but have seen it before, its certainly between .500 and .600, probably on the lower half of that range. Its not .800 or .900, which is what you are suggesting. Not to mention that taking a few specific cases to make the point in a league of a thousand players is statistically useless. I could easily find a couple guys traded the other way who did better in the AL, but that also proves nothing. Overall results, which are a much more complete reflection of reality, says that the AL is a little better than the NL. Not 2-3 full ERA runs better.
  10. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) Silva took the fluke baton from Randy Wells this year. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets crushed in interleague though, he's maybe the ultimate example of what a move to the NL can do for a pitcher. That league is an absolute joke, which makes the Cubs struggles even more surprising. This argument again? The same one I see used for Peavy? Let's not be ridiculous. A pitcher changes leagues and his ERA changes by 2 or 3 full points, and you seriously think that's because of the league change? If the AL was that much better, they'd win 95% of the interleague games, not 53% of them. The AL is better, but not even close to enough to solely justify Peavy's downfall or Silva's renaissance.
  11. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) <!--quoteo(post=2168331:date=Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:28 PM:name=Buehrlesque)-->QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) <!--quotec-->(*Shedding Konerko, Pierzynski and Jenks would net the team more than $20 million to work with, although KW's M.O. is to make a trade not sign a FA.) Problem is we have about $16.5M in raises next season and payroll will probably be pared back with shrinking revenue streams so unless we move someone like Buehrle I'm not sure how much payroll flexibility we'll actually have in 2011 even after letting 8 players go in free agency and trading/non-tendering Jenks. Buehrle 14 Castro 0.2 buyout Danks 6 ARB Floyd 5 Linebrink 5.5 Peavy 16 Pena 2 ARB Pierre 5 Quentin 5 ARB Ramirez 1.1 Rios 12 Teahen 4.75 Thornton 3 option Viciedo 1.25 TOTAL: 80.8 That's 12 major league baseball players totaling $80.8M One of MB or Peavy will be traded, I am pretty sure. Pena might too, and Linebrink if they can find a suitor.
  12. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:43 PM) I don't think that Viciedo will be ready next year. He just turned 21, and has not yet demonstrated that he has the baseball skill and acumen to be one of those rare players who can contribute at the Major League Level at such a young age. Moreover, he is not nearly ready to play consistently good defense at any position. I'd much prefer a power hitting left handed first baseman. Viciedo has been red hot lately in AAA.
  13. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 11:44 AM) I've always thought that Ozzie and Walker are competent at what they do, but are average at best. Therefore, I won't be unhappy if Kenny brings a new staff in this winter. To be clear, I am not among the crowd that labels Ozzie or Walker as stupid, or anything of the like. They both are obviously smart guys, and they know baseball, and I don't doubt that they work their asses off. But they simply haven't been effective, from what evidence I can see.
  14. I hope that Ozzie is shown the door before Opening Day 2011, as well as the advance scouting and hitting coaching staffs. I just don't have confidence anymore that they can do what is needed with any new players brought in.
  15. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 07:11 AM) Unload and reload please. The goal is to win the World Series, not to just catch the Twins. Can this team playing at their best win it all? No. Well, if the Sox miraculously catch the Twins, that probably means they get really hot and stay that way for the rest of the season. So by nature, if that happens, we would look awfully good in the post-season, having the hot hand.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 07:56 PM) When you look into your sunglasses, a reflection of Obama appears. True story. On stuff like this, I'll wear it. I'm fine with this decision, as I agree that in the long run its probably for the best. I've not been ecstatic with Obama thus far, but I think he's taken the right approach on most environmental issues. He knows you can't just go in and lay down the law about alt energy and wild lands/animal protections, especially with the economy in the s***ter. But instead of abandoning ship entirely on the matter (ala Bush), he's trying to get done what he can get done.
  17. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) HoT FiRe with 3 errors today. OUCH. You keep using this strange nickname for Viciedo. Where are you getting it from? Also, note that Savannah had 0 runs on 10 hits against Kanny. Stranded 13 runners. Ouch.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) I've always gotten the feeling those work better from LHP than RHP unless the RHP is a true sidearmer. Rem isn't a sidearmer. But he's unusual in that he's got a big deceptive motion and excellent control.
  19. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 06:33 PM) To be fair, Iceland does commercially hunt whales under very strict limitations, and the market is so small that they don't even fill their annual cap of 30-35 whales per year. There are about 250,000 whales in the waters surrounding Iceland, IIRC, and limited hunting would be sustainable. This seems like pretty much classic Obama environmental policy, thus far. Its the halfway answer. Offer the olive branch of allowing a very small number to be taken over 10 years at reducing levels, and in exchange get transparency to keep illegal operations better in check. In the long run, its probably a positive net effect.
  20. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 07:02 AM) Have you seen him pitch?? Deceptive deliveries usually play in the bigs a la Dontrelle Willis early on Video, not in person. Big high leg kick, and something I'm not sure I can describe with the upper body, makes the ball look a lot faster out of his hand than it really is.
  21. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2010 -> 10:19 PM) He also allowed 3 stolen bases. I'd have guessed he would have trouble holding runners on. He's got a big, odd motion, which helps deceive hitters, but I'm sure his delivery time to the plate is slow.
  22. Anyone in or near Illinois State, you need to take shelter. Now. Damaging tornado.
  23. Glad to see Remenowsky getting back to form: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. He had 3 or 4 bad outings in a row, which I don't think he's ever had.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2010 -> 07:34 PM) I think experience says...follow your course, and they get into the lake. You want to stop them, you go the drastic route. My experience tells me that bizarre foreign fish are going to get in there anyway, and already ARE there. Zerba mullosks, lamprey, etc. all invaded. Various salmon, alewives, other fish were put there intentionally, which was stupid. Here is my opinion - some will get through no matter what. Its a question of what economic toll you want to take. Kind of the same reasoning I use to support having a virtual wall on the southern border, instead of a concrete rampart.
