  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 07:54 AM) All the guy wrote was that one of his New Year's wishes was that Peavy and Rios justify the White Sox big investment in them. I think we all have that wish. Thank you. I'm not a big fan of Rogers' baseball articles either, but you have to understand that he isn't writing towards the uber-fans. He is addressing the heart of the fan base, which sometimes feel differently about these players than the superfans on this site do (myself included). To them, they still don't trust Peavy or Rios to do well yet, and they love Paulie, even if the numbers say that PK has been a mediocre 1B in terms of offensive production for a few years now.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 07:36 PM) It isn't hard to see it being our future. Right now we are programed to worry about the huge attacks. As more and more of those avenues become too difficult for Al Qaeda to pull off, they will not just go away. The transition will be to smaller and smaller attacks more frequently. It is how it progresses. I honestly feel you are seeing that transition as we speak in this country. We will never be at that level. Israel is surrounded by, and economically intertwined with, multiple states who politically and literally want them dead. Geography and economics will not allow the US to have that level of security threats from Islamic Jihadists and the like. Just won't happen. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 09:14 PM) I love that oft repeated myth. Myth? Its not a myth, its quite clearly the single largest contributing factor. We meddle. Of course, its not nearly as simple as saying "pull out of everywhere", any more than it is to say its a myth. Neither of those stances make much sense. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 07:04 AM) I'm sure you'd be equally thrilled if Yemeni and Saudi soldiers were patrolling your neighborhood and every now and then one of your neighbors were killed as a civilian casualty. We're patrolling neighborhoods in Yemen and Saudi Arabia?
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) Was it in the ninth inning of a no-hitter that was being thrown against the Sox? It was indeed in the bottom of the 9th. Not sure about the no-hitter though. Why? Were you there too?
  4. An update on the winter league performances of some selected Sox major and minor league players is up on SoxNet.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 07:01 PM) I would be curious where that line for people... How many people would like to have a society like Israel with M16s on most corners, 4 hour waits for plane trips, and searches done all of the time? Its definitely an interesting discussion. Although Israel is under a much different level of threat than the US. Interesting side effect in Isreal - terrorism and bombings still occur regularly, but due to the police state, regular crime is very, very low.
  6. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) i dunno... i just think all the hoopla is ridiculous. yes, s*** happens. yes, s*** will continue to happen. but iran has these kinds of suicide attacks daily. ours have now been separated by 8 years. there's absolutely no way to guard against terrorism except by invisible measures (ie: intelligence). Extra scanners will cost $ and the terrorists will figure out a way around them anyway. Plus, like has already been mentioned - you make air travel 100% secure, then they'll just bomb a subway. Naturally the government is forced to do something just so it can look like they're doing something in response, but any measure that gets taken will be a useless, superficial one designed to make the masses happy - even if it doesn't increase security, and even if it wastes millions, if not billions of dollars. This is the opposite extreme of the fearmongering. It makes no sense to do nothing, really. You plug the obvious holes you can, you adjust over time to new tactics... that will prevent many deaths. That is worth it. the key is just to not get past the point of diminishing returns, where you prevent no more loss of life but keep spending billions. Hard to know where exactly that line is, but that doesn't mean you should just throw up your hands and give up either.
  7. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) Overall, with proper concern for privacy, I am also for these scanners. I am concerned when we are forced to give up other rights because something is not a "right". It probably falls within the 10th Amendment, but just because something is not defined as a rights does not mean we can throw out the Constitution when someone is involved in that activity. The software already contains measures to protect - obscuring certain areas as long as they don't contain something bad, no facial features, and no memory function.
  8. flying is a special risk - the confined space and vulnerability, not to mention the fact that you are flying in a guided missle, means security needs to be special. Further, flying isn't a right, any more than driving is. I'm all for these scanners, and suggest that for those who aren't willing, that they can wait in a different line, and undergo the full pat-down instead, which takes a lot longer.
  9. Oh man, so many. My father, and the rest of my family, are Cubs fans. But once a year through childhood, my Dad would begrudgingly take me to one Sox game at Comiskey (he grew up in Englewood until around age 7, and his father was a Sox fan). I saw all sorts of amazing games in there - the infamous seat cushion game, back-to-back-to-back HR (I think it was Law-Guillen-Baines, maybe), and Gary Redus winning the game on a home run in the bottom of the 9th, when the Sox were down 4 runs or more going into the 9th. Dad was a good sport though, he didn't root against the Sox, and in some of those great moments, I caught him smiling. Now, its my own daughter, who I took to her first game this past August. She was 9 months old, and I couldn't believe how much fun she had - didn't cry or get upset once. Just loved it. Can't wait for next year.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 05:55 AM) I'll take base-clogging if it's at a .370+ clip. And, as slow as Thome is, he's a solid baserunner. There was also the thought that bringing Swisher in was going to improve his homer totals, but that proved false. The Coliseum is much bigger than the Cell and will sometimes allow for better averages. It's entirely possible that Cust would come in and do exactly what Swisher did - they are pretty similar players. I will take better hitters who may be older and more injury prone rather than a fresher player who is very likely to be worse. Want to emphasize the bolded. Thome is not only a smart baserunner, he also wasn't the slowest baserunner on the team last year. Konerko takes that crown. A couple years back, I'd put Crede behind Thome in terms of effective speed on the bases as well. Thome is slow, but he isn't quite as bad a baserunner as he's sometimes characterized. And he hustles.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 09:52 AM) Now we are getting back to the true intent of the thread! Yeah, I thought the idea here was people that are not typical crushes. Erin Andrews? Kind of the opposite. I'll throw out another one... haven't seen her lately, but some years ago, I thought Jeanine Garrafolo was hot. I have no idea why, I can't describe it... just something.
  12. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 09:24 PM) Aardsma, Dewon Day, Bukvich, Sisco (can't recall if he made an appearance that year), MacDougal, Wasserman, etc. My goodness was that a bad bullpen! Wassermann in 2007, his only near-full season: 2.74 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, .224 AvgA. He was actually an above-average reliever that year, among a crowd of losers. QUOTE (The Beast @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) Really? Did Tony Romo graduate? Hell no, he's a dumb ass. I'm not a big Dotel fan is all. I'd rather see Kelly Wunsch out there than Oh, Do Tell. LOL, this wasn't the "players I'm not a fan of" thread, its supposed to be the absolute worst of the decade. With all the awful players to choose from, how can you pick a guy who was probably better than most relievers the team had in that period?
  13. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 1, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) Tempe was covered in cardinal and gold last night. 3rd bowl win in school history. Pretty nice, two seasons after going 2-10.
  14. The White Sox right now have a truly classic looking going on. Don't mess with it, or you'll end up with some of the garbage this team had in the 70's and 80's.
  15. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) Christina Hendricks. dear lord in heaven. Right there with ya. Saw here in Firefly. Speaking of which, I loved Jewel Staite in that show.
  16. I tend not to crush on celebrities or people on TV/big screen, because I usually prefer women that aren't skin and bones. I'm definitely a fan of the hourglass. Women need curves. I also think most women look better with little or no makeup. So I am a lot more likely to crush on some girl I see on the train, or walking around the city, than an actress or model. There are a few women in Hollywood with a little more on them, that I like - Beyonce (though she seems to fluctuate), Kate Winslet, Scarlett Johannsen as examples. But oddball crushes? OK - Julie Warner.
  17. Without a doubt the best financial news we've seen in a while: Employers to boost hiring in 2010.
  18. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 06:22 PM) That's my focus anyway and what I'm here for, whether you look at the minor leaguers as prospects or trade bait, but that was funnier. For you...The ladies love my autographed Chris Widger jersey. This thread doesn't work as well with so few people posting in it. We need some new blood. Why not give some of these youngsters a shot? Like the ones from Birmingham, maybe?
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 05:03 PM) I think Kila has a legitimate chance at making the team, or atleast he should. They've lost Shealy and Jacobs this offseason, so they're lacking 1B depth. Hopefully he gets a shot. You may be right. So if my Kila trade concept doesn't fly, my backup, more realistic choice is... Thome.
  20. I've used the puffer machines in airports before - I don't see them as a problem, from a user point of view. I agree with Rex that its a much more practical tool at this point than the magnetometer. That said, explain this to me - if this thing can sniff out explosives, why the hell do I still have to take off my shoes, belt, and everything else? I would volunteer for the puffer machine line every time, if they let me stay dressed. And lf, you make a good point about the lists - however, I do think that anyone on the watch list, trying to come into the country, even if not on the no-fly-list, should at least be given a serious "random" search.
  21. I'm hoping we trade for Kila Ka'ahuie, and move Paulie to DH. Seemed like KC had a crowd at 1B, maybe not as much anymore, but Kila has nowhere to go at the moment. Should be able to be had without giving up the farm. Similar to how we acquired TCQ. Gives Paulie more rest for the hip.
  22. QUOTE (mreye @ Dec 28, 2009 -> 09:45 AM) "The system worked." Seriously? LOL, that's as idiotic as blaming Obama for this. The guy was, from what I read, on the terrorist watch list, but somehow NOT on the no-fly list (f*** up), AND he got through screening with explosives (f*** up). The system worked... that's a laugh.
  23. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 24, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) They were not better than the 98 Yankees and it really isn't close. The 98 Yankees are easily the best team in the last 20 years. The 05 Sox were one of the top 2 teams of this decade though and the best team in 05 which is really all that matters. Ah yes, the phrase used when obviously, it is close, or people wouldn't be talking about it. The 98 Yankees team was probably better, but I think people have different ideas of what makes teams better or worse. In any case, not the same decade - I still take the 2005 Sox as the best of the decade. The numbers are pretty clear.
