  1. I've lost track I think, but so far day 2, only one guy looks particularly good. The others I just don't know, as they are obviously picks made for tools, not results, and I don't know their tools. Can someone update Post 1 of this thread, or the other one, with the picks so far?
  2. QUOTE (OrlandoFan @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 11:46 AM) Mrs. OrlandoFan and I will be attending when the cubs visit the Sox on Friday the 26th. We do not have a parking pass. We would like to park & ride from the Blue Line CTA Rosemont or Cumberland stop; will there still be construction requiring a bus detour at that time? If so, would trying to park at the game be a reasonable option? We have parked there many time before, just never when there was a sellout crowd. Thanks! Blue Line shut-downs are now more rare, and only happen on the weekends (starting late in the evening Friday). Check CTA site that week to see if there is one. I don't like parking at the game, its a giant pain in the rear. Blue Line to Red Line should do you fine.
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 04:18 PM) And then there's the person that b****es about all of the above. Or the person who b****es about the b****es who b**** about b****ing.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) I've often wondered why some pitchers get a hand when they get taken out in the 5th or 6th inning and have given up 5 runs. I don't know why Ozzie is jealous Beckham is getting a hand for doing nothing. He should be happy for him. Beckham is smart enough to know he's going to have to produce or it will sound like Wise coming to the plate everytime he walks up to it. As far as Wise goes, I really think the only reason he's around is stubborness. I go to a lot of games. I've only booed one White Sox in my life. It wasn't Wise so I really don't understand when he gets booed, but he hasn't produced. I think Ozzie needs to know that people making a lot less money than him pay a lot more money to watch the White Sox play. Seeing Wise flail away at a 58 footeer gets old very quickly. Considering the family of 4 index, the only teams that are more expensive to watch are the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs. White Sox fans deserve a higher quality player in the batter's box. Alright, I'll bite. Who did you boo?
  5. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) On the second point, please educate me, because I was always under the assumption that there was some sort of an tax on oil. I don't even know all the dynamics, but it depends on lost of factors, such as where it is extracted, who buys it, who owns it first, etc. But its not like Exxon pulls it out of the ground and pays taxes on it as soon as they get it. They extract it, refine or process it into various states, and the resulting products are sold and taxed like other commodity items (sort of). And I do not know if Alaska specifically levies a tax on the commodities anyway, or if they even can, if the final sold product isn't producing in Alaska (even though the oil may come from there). Also, if you use a sliding tax scale like that, you are actually doing damage to the effort to get off oil.
  6. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 09:02 AM) Ok, so let me try and flesh this out a bit. I presume the quote was about money that is brought in via a tax on oil, correct? Hence the part about how it's government income. And if her philosophy is the less money me make the less we'll spend... then there are 2 options. 1) Pocket the tax money for a "rainy day" fund, and dont spend it because government spending is evil. 2) Put in a sliding scale on the tax on oil. Just an example: 10% tax on $20-30 a barrol, 7% on $31-40, 5% on 41-50. You get the idea. That would keep your income down as prices go up. OK, for one, Alaska already has a "rainy day" fund, its called the Alaska Permanent Fund. You can go google it. They get money from the government and from oil such that they run large budget surpluses, put the money in the fund, and everyone in AK gets a state tax refund, instead of paying taxes. But that is a whole different discussion there. Second, the taxes don't work like that. There is no tax on oil per se, in the way you state.
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 10, 2009 -> 08:43 AM) The future of the GOP: I actually like that quote from her. She's a disaster overall, but that sentiment is just fine with me.
  8. Unless he finds the fountain of youth and plays here for another 10 years... he's an Indian in the HOF. Zero question about it, despite that we'd like it to be otherwise (and that the CLE fans' behavior shows they don't deserve it).
  9. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) In terms of his offense growth, wouldn't that worry you guys to have him getting only part time at bats? Yes, and I think its a bad idea, but even more so on defense than offense. I'd rather see someone like Castro or Lucy back up AJ in 2010 with Flowers getting another full time year under his belt in Charlotte, then get called up during 2010 sometime, to be the starter in 2011.
  10. Hey look, a football player - outfielder with speed. What a surprise.
  11. anyone else freaked out a little that there are people being drafted this year who were born in the 90's?
  12. According to JPN336, Charlie has been promoted to Birmingham, to take Poreda's spot in the rotation. His final W-S numbers: 11 games (all starts) W-L: 8-1 ERA: 3.88 WHIP: 1.21 GO/AO: 2.09 AvgA: .251 IP: 65.0 H: 63 BB: 16 K: 44 HR: 0 His numbers are not outright spectacular, but he does induce a lot of ground balls, gave up no home runs, and his other numbers are all good-not-great. His last start was actually one of his few bad ones.
  13. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) Charlie Shirek was promoted to B'ham to take Aaron Poreda's spot. With Colon going on the DL in Chicago, Poreda takes his spot. Tyson Corley, who for some odd reason was promoted from Kanny all the way to Charlotte, should be sent to W-S to take Shirek's roster spot. Good on ya, Charlie. Should be interesting to see if he's really the prospect I think he is. I'm sure he'll have a few tough games at first, though. I think other moves are in the making. I happened to go look at Remenowsky's page on MiLB (for another discussion), and he suddenly doesn't have a team associated with his profile.
  14. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) I don't think Colon will accept that role and will ask to be released. And that would be just fine.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:59 PM) I nailed this one... You could see this coming a mile away, even before Poreda was recalled. Colon hasn't advanced at all this season, and the league has started to figure him out. He's clearly not healthy, and its not his knee either. He's not throwing right, he's not got any real velocity, he's protecting the arm to last as long as possible. If he returns from the DL, he needs to show he can throw with some speed, and then he's a bullpen guy, not a starter.
  16. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) In the video he says not to blame KW and Ozzie. so it's our fault and some of the media members. DFA him when Quentin comes back. Interesting. Like I said, I don't think he's a bad guy, he's just being put in a position to fail. I put the blame squarely on the organization in this case.
  17. So far, this thread is as embarrassing as I figured it would be. Kudos to the posters who have nothing intelligent to add beyond fat jokes and laughable team comparisons.
  18. I can't see the vid at work, but, I do feel a little badly for him personally. Not because I think the criticism isn't deserved, but I think the real criticism should fall on KW and Ozzie for running Wise out there almost every day when he is barely a AAA player, let alone a major leaguer. I'm sure DeWayne is a good guy, works hard, and is just trying to do his thing. That is why I never boo players just beacuse they play badly, only when they are also treating the fans like crap. Interestingly, I wonder what the reactions will be here on this, after the Fields whining.
  19. It appears I don't value Dotel as much as others. I just don't see him as being as reliable as most people here, apparently.
  20. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 02:35 PM) It's funny to see almost everyone we have drafted over the last ten years have been a bust, yet we been able to deal so many of our minor leaguers for actual major league talent. Makes you wonder what the problem is. And i think that article failed to take that into consideration. One thing KW has done well with the talent they did draft, is trading them at the right time for some value.
  21. QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:46 PM) How is Buehrle not the steal? Good point.
  22. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) I think we've drafted much better the past two years. Hopefully we can keep that going. This.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:24 AM) This is why the "Public Option" as proposed by the President is such a brilliant move. If the Republicans are right and the public insurance option is a government run debacle...then what happens is we've altered the tax structure enough to find a way to push the uninsured in to the ranks of the insured, and hopefully cut costs because we won't have 50 million people using the vastly more expensive emergency care systems and getting appropriate preventative care. If, on the other hand, I'm right and the public system will be vastly more efficient than the private debacles we currently have...then either the private system will have to lower its costs to stay competitive or it will go extinct. There really is no downside for anyone other than a current insurance company executive. If the Republicans are right, then the public option barely costs anything, if the Democrats are right, then the public option keeps this country out of bankruptcy. Not what I was getting at, when I said consumer choice. Here is what I mean, in very brief terms. When you go to spend money on something, you find the product that is the combination of best and cheapest, to get the most value of it. With insurance companies, this choice is entirely gone. If you have insurance, you find a doctor, and pay them all the same damn amount. Further, when you have hospitalization or other charges, its nearly impossible to know how much you really end up paying, AND you don't get to really choose a provider, they are chosen for you. On the flip side, the medical professionals charge some amount, the insurance company uses formulas only they know to dictate how much they actually pay and charge down, and then the customer billing is decided. By having the insurance companies between like this, the normal equation of consumer choice is shot to hell.
  24. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:22 AM) How many times have we've been a really sucky team with KW as GM? In 07, and it looks like this year. The difference though is this year, we actually have some decent prospects compared to 07 when we had s***. Also, it seems like KW is furious and there's some serious tension going on between Ozzie and KW. I wouldn't be surprised if KW wants the young guys to play, and to force Ozzie's hand, he'll trade away some of the vets. This team still looks more like the 2008 team than the 2007 one, IMO, but with its best hitter injured. The 2008 team had its struggles early as well. And summer is late this year. I think we see KW make a move or two early, but they are tweaks or moves that help now AND later. Then come July, if we're abysmal, that's a different story. I think the next month or so will tell the fortunes of this team.
  25. Kenny isn't going into firesale mode yet, if ever. If he makes trades, its for now AND later.
