QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) Miss California ousted for speaking out against gay marriage: I'm a bit embarrassed to say I actually know something about this... that is not why she was ejected from her position, according to the people that manage these things. The Donald, who is that manager, said she had been missing engagements she had agreed to do, in order instead to make unapproved speeches about this whole gay marriage thing. He called her out publically, and gave her another chance, then she missed engagements again. According to Trump, that is why she was removed from that postiion.

Charlie made his debut with AA Birmingham yesterday (6/11), and it was a very nice outing: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K Not a lot of strikeouts, but one of the best signs of his outing was his GB/FB ratio of 15/5. He was pitching to contact and incuding a lot of ground balls, which is great to see, and a key to future success with the Sox (playing in what is normally a home run hitters' park). He also had a nice 2.09 GO/AO ratio at W-S before the promotion and a nice low 2.21 BB/9 with no home runs given up on the season, so the control and downward movement are definitely there.

A MESSAGE TO THE SOXTALK COMMUNITY
NorthSideSox72 replied to Administrator's topic in Pale Hose Talk
For anyone really worried about this... we will not become WSI. We are not even thinking of some of the overly strict restrictions they have on that site, and we do not want a pack mentality. Be negative if you want to, no one here is going to label you a dark cloud. Just follow that last sentence from YASNY's post, and you will be fine (and, the board will be better for it, for all of us). -
Anyone else see where CLE beat KC 4-3 in the 10th on a hit off a bird? Seagull saves the day for CLE. Pretty bizarre.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 08:39 AM) I read the first page of this thread and believed I had read enough to where I can opine. As I read PHT, in general, by the time I reach the end of a thread I have usually rolled my eyes several times and just flat believe that there is no need, nor do I have desire to comment on the garbage that I read. It gets pretty disgusting at times. I have gone from someone that was a very active PHT poster to someone rarely bothers anymore, even though I read it fairly regularly. The degeneration of Soxtalk post quality has been ongoing for quite some time. This is not, and I repeat not, just a result of the team's poor play this season. The Sox won the division championship last year, but the amount of vitriol was still over the top all season long. A little restraint, decorum, politeness and thoughtfulness can go a long way. This post is spot on, and the last sentence really covers what we are looking for. -
From what I have read so far on who we picked, overall I think we did pretty well. But the signing phase is just as important, so we'll know more in a couple months how it really went. We should probably have a new thread that shows all the draft picks, and updates their signing status.

I was sure this would be about a 10:1 ratio in favor of no, since its about 10:1 male to female on the board (or slightly more than that). I can't believe this many guys use conditioner.

My lord, people. You are seriously trying to disparage the Dems or Reps as a whole, based on the behaviors of various whack-jobs who happen to use one of the extreme ends of the spectrum as an excuse for their violence? Wow.

ITs not a question of capable, as I am sure he could make it work. He'd be rusty. But more importantly, he'd be in pain, if he's hurt like people are saying he is, and you don't want him to get injured further.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) whatever happened to Ben Broussard? I'd have to check, but I believe he was released after an unspectacular run at Charlotte early this season. Baseball Cube doesn't show anything after that - he may be out of baseball.

Lehigh Valley beating Charlotte 2-0 in the 7th. Egbert started and actually looked good, just no offense. B-Ham @ Mississippi scoreless in the 2nd, Shirek with his first start at AA. W-S beating Potomac 2-1 in the 6th, Carter started and looking decent but with 4 walks. Kanny rained out again, Sauer WAS due to start.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 06:04 PM) Hmm, it has been pretty mild in Memphis too. I mean, it's still in the upper 80s mostly, but that's low for here this time of year. And it has been unusually rainy/cloudy here a lot. I work at a golf course so it sucks b/c we've been getting on and off rain so much and it keeps golfers away. See, "mild" in Memphis in June is a good thing. "Mild" in Chicago in June means crappy.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 06:09 PM) what about fat people? they are like half the population and being obese is as bad if not worse than being a drunk is for your health. That is also a factor in how you fall on organ donation lists.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) I have no idea what depth of your imagination you pulled that from. You think cig and booze taxes are there to help curb those behaviours? They are there because politicians see an easy source of revenue. What i am saying is that if they mandate preventative care, and dictate just what that care is, it is but a short step to say that if you didnt do the preventative care, you dont get the benefits. Drink too much? no liver transplant for you. And you may not, in theory, be able to deny coverage, but you can sure move people to the back of the list, thereby denying them timely healtcare. This already happens in the current environment - as it should.

QUOTE (Cubano @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) Why do I have to pay for somebody consuming drugs in the street? Why do I have to pay for somebody that is sitting at home watching soap opera or Jerry Springer or Geraldo Rivera or Oprah? Why do I have to pay for somebody that keep having kids with 100 men to collect government handouts? Why do I have to pay for somebody that simply do not want to improve themselves? I'm going to use my favorite lostfan response here... lol wut?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) That's really part of the problem IMO. The fact that money is the bottom line. We're not talking about a flavor of soft drink, or a Blu-Ray player, or a website, we're talking about people's health. And furthermore, the consumer base doesn't have any kind of control over it because they can't see it, so I don't even really think the free market/laissez-faire argument is that valid anyway. They shouldn't be allowed to just extract profits from us because they want to, and because they can. I've brought this up before as well. Health Care is one of the few areas where the motivations of value and profit between business and consumers just does not work well. You can't leave it purely to market forces. OTOH, you can't just institutionalize everything either. IMO, a good part of the solution here should be the encouragement (at least) of not-for-profit but private entities running health care facilities and insurance.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) California is the same way. I can walk through the hills and say "These houses are going to burn down within 20 years" and those areas still get built up. There's a wonderful place right next to the San Andreas on the 14 where there is a whole hillslope that has been covered with new houses over the past 6 years, and a few places just down the slope where there are about 5 McMansions sitting right next to a man-made lake...which is there originally because of the fault. Every time you see people complaining about their houses burning down out here, you should remember how easy it would have been to keep houses from being built in the really, really guaranteed to burn areas in the foothills...or at least how many steps there now are to fireproof houses in those areas. This is where the government should indeed step in, in two ways. 1. Declare certain areas too high risk for building, because of highly likely disasters. Disasters COULD happen anywhere, but certain areas, like right next to the San Andreas or in below sea level areas on the Gulf Coast, you KNOW it will happen, and relatively soon. You prevent them from building residences, or businesses with hazardous materials, in those areas. 2. For people already in those areas, you make it law that they will not get financial assistance from the government in the event of the highly likely event you are marking for. By doing it this way, you avoid 5A Takings Clause issues because you are not dealing in things that belong to them (government assistance is not guaranteed in disasters) with your prevention. ETA: You need to draw this line pretty far up. These have to be areas of extreme risk, as I noted.

NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Allen is the guy I want to see in 2010 at some point, but I think he and Viciedo would have steep learning curves. Kroeger is much lower ceiling but would probably do better short term. So its a question of what the hell we are doing this year. If we are really making a run at the division, its Kroeger, and PK back ASAP. If we are retooling for 2010 and anything else is a bonus, then leave PK on the DL as long as he needs plus a little bit, and bring up Allen. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) Great. So when are we moving everyone out of California, the Gulf coast, and the Atlantic coast? After all we KNOW that there are going to be natural disasters there that are going to cost trillions more than if we just deserted those areas. We KNOW that many, many people there are going to be harmed. Why don't we force everyone out? Why did we pay to rebuild, and maintain places like Louisana when we KNOW that more Katrinas will happen in the future. It would just be preventative care, right? It would be saving people from harm, right? Nope, sorry, I don't agree with the logic. People are free to do what they want, and I shouldn't be forced to subsidize it, even though I pretty much am. The NOLA thing is a disaster. They had the chance to do what Chicago did after the fire, and rebuild smartly - in their case, rebuilding in areas NOT as prone to flooding, leaving the rest as open space, which would have had all sorts of benefits in lower infrastructure costs, better home values, and lesser risk of future disasters. But alas, no one at the federal, state or local levels had the balls (or not enough people did) to do it that way. Sorry, that was really a side issue, but its one that drives me nuts.
