  1. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) How short of leash does Floyd have? 1 baserunner? He's only at 76 pitches and has given up 1 run. He's got a pretty long leash still, I'd think.
  2. My hat is off to Ozzie for his game mgmt so far this series. Good stuff.
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) Look at those idiots caught on camera switching the ball and throwing back another one. Seriously? Bleacher dolts.
  4. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 12:53 PM) No. When teams realize that they should pitch around him and take their chance with the rest of the lineup, his numbers will drop. Bonus tidbit...a girl who was a waitress out at Regions Park back in 2006 was originally from Minnesota. Her sister had dated Mauer, and she said that he was a complete jerk. Ex-girlfriends tend to think that of their ex's.
  5. Soriano has the 2nd lowest OBP of any Cubs regular. And he's leading off.
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) Awesome haha I remember a picture like this, the faux inspirational posters, came out after the big AJ getting punched game with the Cubs. It had a picture of the punch in motion, and the caption read something like "when you suck at baseball, punch people in the face". Loved that.
  7. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 11:45 AM) Looks like Lee Cruz is coming up to B'ham too. That means more players from B'ham are going up to Charlotte. I guess they're finally dumping the duds in Charlotte. Kind of cool to watch this in motion, and see where the dust settles.
  8. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 11:44 AM) I definitely would never want to be responsible for making a decision like that. Plus, to that point, we never really even had much of a beef with Japan, and vice versa. Japanese history was at the end of a strange spasm of imperialsim in WWII. They had spent so many centuries preferring to be isolated. But then starting around the 1880's, they embarked on a series of huge wars, getting into tangles with China, Russia, and of course there was WWII. Then they kind of rewound and went back to that chosen isolation, though not economically, and that change worked well for them. ETA: I believe that the Russo-Japanese War, around 1899-1901 (peace treaty helped by Teddy R), was the third bloodiest war ever, having more deaths than any other than the 2 WW's.
  9. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 11:32 AM) Looks like Seth Loman, Justin Edwards & Tyler Kuhn have been promoted to Winston-Salem. Daniel Hudson & Christian Marrero are headed for Birmingham. David Cook may be going up to Charlotte, watch this space. I'd have to think some guys go to Kanny from the draft class then, or possible guys who played Rookie last year.
  10. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 10:42 AM) It looks like we're not going to get this one in. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 10:52 AM) I heard it was beautiful out there right now. How is the weather going to be at 700 which I am more interested in for my softball game? Its been nice out since about 9am, weather.com says precip chances very low (below 20%) until 2pm, but then spikes up to like 50-60%, then starts to go down again after 4pm, 5pm, down to 30% at 6pm, stays 30% until late night. I'd say good chance they get the game in, possibly with a delay in the middle. Softball still on, buddy.
  11. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) C.J. Retherford says hi. So do Ehren Wassermann and Dan Remenowsky.
  12. Our first undrafted FA, huh? Always fun to see how those work out.
  13. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 08:50 PM) Chicago Tribune - Sports Demo's White Sox fans have the lowest graduation rate, but should Cub fans be arguing that since they continue to continuously support a losing tradition? Merging with the thread I started a few days ago on the same article.
  14. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 08:59 PM) The storms are coming. You live in Iowa. The storms are coming every day from April to August. At least you don't live in Bradgate.
  15. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) If you disagree, your post here doesn't count. Agree or don't post in the 'buster. He misunderstood what he was quoting, as lostfan illustrated, he didn't disagree so much as not get it. I think we're all on the same page now.
  16. I wish they had said more about who was in Bristol, that would be on that squad.
  17. I actually take that back about Shirek, he did have a quality start.
  18. Egbert has been rockin' as a starter. Charlie Shirek gives up his first HR this year, has a not-great outing. Santo Luis has had a pretty terrible season - I thought some people were high on him as a power reliever.
  19. QUOTE (Nixon @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 12:32 PM) http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2009/j...7/iran-uprising Reminds me of the death in Memphis right after 9/11, when that TDOT staffer was found burned to death in her car (she had provided a driver's license to one or more of the hijackers). Unless it really is coincidence... disgusting.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 11:54 AM) Ok, even I have to admit this is pretty f***ing surreal - headline in CNN's latest news today: "Fly bugs Obama, so he coolly smacks it" LOL, that reads like a headline from The Onion.
  21. QUOTE (False Alarm @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) so after railing against nonfic earlier in this thread i'm now reading The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008, by thomas e ricks. it's all right. quite a bit of interesting stuff on tactics and strategy. I read an earlier Iraq book of his, called Fiasco, that was (IMO) essential reading if you want a picture of how things went in Iraq. Actually, that could be an interesting reading list. To understand the Iraq War, the essentials: All three of the Woodward books on BushCo and the war on terror Cobra II by Gordon, Trainer Curveball by Bob Drogin Fiasco by Thomas Ricks Blackwater by Jeremy Scahill Idiot's Guide to Surviving in Iraq by James Janega That should give you a pretty good picture of the various military, political, intel and ground factors. The only missing piece really is a good cultural guide to Iraq, so, you'll have to find that youself, as I don't know one off hand.
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 04:41 PM) Interesting. You'd figure home games would be cheap to do. Same motivation as black-outs. You try to draw more home crowds by not broadcasting the home games.
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 11:32 AM) He sold out on that on his campaign, so, what did people expect there? I'm over that, though. Besides him obviously being two-faced, I don't think the issue itself is what it was blown up to be in the first place. He's been more or less what I thought he was going to be. I didn't want sweeping super-liberal change and that isn't what I was voting for. I figure, there are goals, and there is what you can accomplish as president. That's about what he is. I also know that the entire government is not going to change overnight. Sometimes I wonder when I see certain criticisms from people - would they wake up from triple bypass surgery not even sure if they're going to live yet, and ask the doctor why their LASIK surgery wasn't done? Oh I agree, overall he's been what he said he'd be. And I'm more positive than negative on his performance thus far. I was just responding specifically to the whole "selling out" thing.
  24. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 11:26 AM) I'd argue that by and large, Obama has taken a lot of steps that are in line with what he's spoken about in his campaign. The only people he's sold out so far has been the gay community. I think he sold out on the telecom immunity thing.
  25. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) Inflation is a huge issue if we don't stop printing money like crazy. Could be. I don't see much effect in the next year or two, but I agree we have to be careful of creating all these debt obligations.
