  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) Wait, what? More than Dotel to get a back-up outfielder? Dotel's one of the best relievers that will be available, and if we start unloading guys to get utility veterans, then KW needs to leave. That's why I suggested (in another thread I think) we do Dotel+Anderson for Johnson+Prospect. I think the reality is, Johnson is a large upgrade over Anderson, we don't know what Quentin's health will be like, and the numbers Johnson puts up aren't far below higher paid guys like Fukudome. If we can get him and a prospect, for Dotel, if the prospect is the right one, I'd do it. But then, I also think that Dotel is likely to go downhill the rest of this year.
  2. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) HOw about Dotel and Anderson for Fukudome? I personally think that Fukudome may not be able to sustain his success, plus he's pricey and the Cubs start him. Johnson is the odd man out, is cheaper, and plays really good defense in CF (but would probably hit better than Anderson).
  3. Anyone think maybe we send Dotel and Anderson to the Cubs for Reed Johnson and a relief prospect?
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) It has to be someone like Dotel. I bet the Cubs would love to add Dotel to the back end of their bullpen. If KW could trade Contreras it would be a miracle. He would have to eat alot, if not all of his contract. I haven't tracked the Cubs lately, but weren't they having a hard time finding playing time for Reed Johnson at one point? If that is still true, he'd be a nice pick-up, but it would take more than Dotel to get him.
  5. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) The Sox have extra starters. Colon may not be great, Contreras may not be great, Richard could be good, Poreda could be good, and there are plenty of teams out there with NEEDS And there are some pitchers in the minors as well, guys like Torres, who aren't huge value, but could be part of a deal, and would get a chance to start on other teams.
  6. This was in the Trib this morning as well, mentioned it in the Contreras thread. The game is afoot.
  7. Were there any holy hand grenades among your birthday drinks?
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:42 AM) Poreda on ESPN 1000 right now. Reports, please!
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) The White Sox could be trading a reliever. Everyone needs them and teams will overpay. Hawk and Stone were talking about it the other day saying teams would have to pay double to get a good reliever. Maybe they were hinting at something. Agreed, the Sox have a few relievers in the minors they could call up (Jon Link for example), and some good ones on the major league squad (the back 4, plus a strangely successful Carrasco and now Poreda), plus a guy like Colon who at this point SHOULD be a reliever. Not many other teams have relievers to spare.
  10. For an article to be posted in FutureSox.com, I would like to see if we can find out who in the system went undrafted. Not talking about international signings here, I mean guys who played high school and/or college ball in the states (eligible for amatuer draft), weren't drafted, but were signed by the Sox. I know of three: Ehren Wassermann, CJ Retherford, and Dan Remenowsky. Anyone know of any others?
  11. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) I think the Poreda call up reaffirms the need for another power arm in the system, preferably, another lefty. . In baseball, I personally think its a mistake in the first few rounds to target needs that specifically. First few rounds, you go get the most talented player available at that time, regardless of position. You might emphasize more upside+risk, or more stable with lower upside, but that's about it. Then, after the first few picks, you start looking at the system (those first few picks included) and say, OK, what are we thin on? Then you go get the best available in those areas (though if some name falls that you can't pass up, you get them, of course).
  12. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 08:35 AM) What are the odds that at least 1 of Getz/Fields, or possibly 2 of Getz/Nix/Fields are gone 3 weeks from now? I'd have to guess probably 50% or higher. Beckham needs a place to call home and get comfortable, and I can't see the Sox sending Fields or Getz down at this stage of their careers. 90%.
  13. QUOTE (SI1020 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 08:53 AM) I do too. I have a documentary from 1978 warning about the impending Ice Age. And as has been discussed here before, those were not scientific pieces. Actual, peer-reviewed scientific research pieces are virtually all acknowledging a warming trend, and at least some degree of human involvement (how much is of course debateable). Those 70's pieces talking of a mini-Ice Age were pop stuff based on just a couple years of data, which isn't enough to make any sort of reasonable case one way or another.
  14. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 10:51 PM) how do you suggest we force the health care industry to lower their outrageous prices? I don't know the solution, but I think part of it has to be a re-entry of consumerism into that markeplace. In the current situation, with the insurance companies between and their billing structures effectively negasting any level of consumer choice or control, the whole system is out of whack.
  15. Cook has a 1.240 OPS in June, hitting .333 with 6 HR in his last 10 games. Season OPS now up to .890. Time for him to go to Charlotte. Allen just looking fantastic, he's hitting, getting on base, not too many K's, decent power in a tough park... can't ask for much more than that.
  16. I don't see any issue with anything Josh said. He's right. He was bad, but had improved noticeably, then got replaced while he was improving. The promotion of Beckham was done at the wrong time, for both Josh/Gordon AND for the team, I agree with Josh on that. I honestly think people's vitriol on here, about him being a mental midget (which looks to me to be far from the truth), and all that ridiculousness, is mostly due to his error yesterday potentially costing the game. Fields' fielding has indeed been a disappointment, no one could say otherwise. But the presence of Beckham on the team will only make Beckham, Fields and Getz WORSE in the short run. Now that he's here, I hope KW has the sense to make another move to let 2 of those 3 guys know who really has a starting job. Otherwise, this little experiment will continue to be a disaster.
  17. QUOTE (Sox1422 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:49 AM) Whisler got sent down for Contreras. the Poreda call up hasn't been officially announced. Then I'm 99% sure its Gobble going down, unless some trade happened that we aren't aware of.
  18. Wasn't expecting this. I don't even know who got sent down when Contreras came up. I guess perhaps Whisler and Gobble are the ones going down for these two. Anyone know?
  19. QUOTE (TitoMB345 @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 03:07 PM) Alexei deserves to be benched after that horrible joke of an AB. Beckham at SS, Getz at 2B, Nix at 3B tonight. You panicky guys are hilarious. He's been getting better and better for weeks, but one AB and he deserves to be benched? Seriously? LOL
  20. I just can't believe how well Pods is doing for the Sox. I was just way wrong about him, at least so far.
  21. Is the ump squeezing the zone? On the gameday screen, and on ESPN earlier, it looked like some pitches right there were being called balls.
  22. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) I saw them pitch yesterday and Gobble looked servicable as he had in his previous few outings which off the top of my head I can not recall each individual stat and Whisler couldn't throw a strike and killed the momentum in the game. Outside of one outing where Gobble had to "wear it" he has looked good to me. I really could care less which stays and which goes maybe a statistical analysis of their careers starting at age 5 will change my mind can you dig that up for me. I think this is the least of their worries. Also Thome should have played yesterday and Saturday over Beckham, an opinion that I fear could get me ridden out of town as god forbid someone not annoint Beckham the second coming. I understand Robin Ventura and Ryne Sandberg began their careers a combined 0-70. This seems like a panic move to me. So in other words, your opinion is based on one game you watched? And the stats are meaningless? But for the record I'm with you in the camp that says calling up Beckham was a mistake. Its just that, now that he's here, he needs to play to develop.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) According to Ozzie at his press conference yesterday, Colon isn't leaving the rotation. If Contreras has a good game today, I bet you see a change of heart on that.
  24. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) why I love drudgereport: Heh, that's a great picture. Dredge report is just some guy's amalgamation of news that fits his world view. Its not a real news source, and no one should be surprised of its bias, any more than DailyKos or HuffPost.
