  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 12:13 PM) <!--quoteo(post=1876157:date=Apr 22, 2009 -> 04:27 PM:name=Balta1701)-->QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 04:27 PM) <!--quotec-->Secretary Chu tries to explain basic Plate Tectonics to Rep Barton, R-TX. LINK Is Barton just really, really dumb? I mean, he's linking the video, where he clearly doesn't get it. This will only work on the wingbats who support him no matter what. Anyone who actually watches the video and has a few brain cells will see this.
  2. The Dash put up 18 hits last night - pretty darn good. Shirek got hit a bit again, not as bad this time though, got the W. Lucy is a great story, and he's doing reasonably well in Charlotte. Decent avg and OBP, and he's been throwing some base stealers out too. I'd say he's healthy. If Miller struggles, we have Donny ready to take over.
  3. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:58 AM) I would guess that India is not liking this either. Does Pakistan have long range nuclear missiles? I don't know, but, it doesn't really matter. They have missiles that can reach everyone else in the region, which is plenty enough to scare people. Also, there is the real fear that the nuclear material or bombs could be taken out of the country to who knows where.
  4. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:21 AM) Ummm, India-Pakistan was actually made more stable, not less by nuclear proliferation. I disagree here. I see no stabilization related to the events. India went nuclear some time in the 80's by most accounts, and wars continued. Paki went more recently, and they still nip at each other. The lack of all out war in recent years is more a factor of lack of central military control in Pakistan, its own fights in the north with Taliban and other tribes, and an economy that was collapsing some time ago.
  5. The Taliban have, for a while, been taking effective control of regions in Pakistan (not Afghanistan - Pakistan). The latest area is called Buner, only 60 miles from the capitol. This, to me, is awfully disturbing. The Paki military is apparently unable or unwanting to wrest back control from the Taliban. Pakistan is a nuclear country, bordering another nuclear country who it wars with regularly (India), a country with no truly effective government (Afghanistan), and a country who is seen by some as a regional hegemon (Iran). if the Taliban were to get into all out war in Pakistan, that could get ugly real fast. Latest article here. Thoughts?
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 09:39 AM) http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/gamelog?playerId=5842 We'll see how long it lasts, but this guy has been their version of Gavin Floyd so far...he has another start today. The consensus was that Edwin would never turn it around, realize his potential, and become a consistent starter. KW can't be right 100% of the time, and Jackson might falter (starting today), but there's no doubt we would be better off with him rather than Jose as our #4/5 guy. I know he was one of the more talked-about names on the boards in terms of targets to fill the back of the rotation. First, there is still plenty of doubt - we are 3 starts in for these guys. Second, how do you know KW was somehow wrong here? Was Jackson even available? Third, you ignore the fact that Jose was already signed and paid - Jackson would cost something.
  7. QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) What? I don't blame either America or the Indians for what happened in the past, as I think both sides were wrong. What's so mind numbing about that? This should probably be a different thread topic, but, as a whole, I think its awfully hard to put much blame on a civilization that fought back as we slowly crushed them to death so that we could take over the continent. You can certainly blame individual Indians, and bands or tribes, for some of their particular actions, though. Its really an interesting duality. Aside from the revolution, I think the event that most heavily influenced the American persona was the march west in the 19th century. That was when our country went through its puberty and into adulthood. Continuing the analogy, we did some pretty awful things in that transition. We annihilated a civilization, but in the process, built one of the great empires the world has known - one that has done many great things for the world.
  8. aaaaaand... 23 minutes after this thread was started.... BAM!
  9. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 06:28 PM) I'm not sure Iran is as close as people say, even so there is almost no chance they'd ever use them. It would be a nice balance of power for the middle east, I kinda hope they do get them to bring some stability to the region. Wow.
  10. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) That was 1973. 40 years of peace between Egypt and Israel requires more than a 20 day war that was shut down by the UN. The UN did not stop that war. Israel kicking ass, again, stopped that war.
  11. A cat snuck onto the field at Wrigley last night (cat is fine). Funny article has a Sox bit at the end.
  12. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) Nothin like a good afternoon beer. So how was VEISHEA this year?
  13. Vote for your Sox favorites - Quentin, Konerko, AJ.... Dewayne Wise... Linky.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 09:27 PM) Exactly. They are honoring a guy who broke down barriers, by forcing their will on everyone. Brilliant. I can't think of a more inappropriate way to honor Robinson. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 16, 2009 -> 07:36 AM) Here is something interesting I thought last night... so, the way to honor the man who introduced DIVERSITY into majr leage baseball... is to force everyone into uniformity. Ironic. Or you read it in this thread three days ago.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) Okay. Brian Anderson is 3 for 13 with 6 K's when he starts out with an 0-1 count. He's 3 for 10 with 6 walks when he starts out with a 1-0 count. In those situations...he's getting a ball 43.5% of the time. That ratio (first pitch balls to strikes) will even out eventually. No quality big league pitchers throw anywhere close to 45% first pitch balls, especially to #9 hitters in the order. And as has been pointed out to multiple times, the book on Anderson was to make him chase bad pitches, so he was adjusting by taking them. He WANTS the trend to change, and it will. That is what being more selective, and taking walks, does for a hitter. And I can't believe you brought up, again, that Wise was treated worse. Wise has been bad, in the majors and the minors, for YEARS. He is an entirely different case.
  16. This got ugly in a hurry. Let's try not to go after other posters' religious beliefs, supposed or know, mmmmmmkay?
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 12:04 PM) How would you all feel if one day America became a Muslim majority nation and Christians were being detained and tortured because it was feared they might be terrorists? Since that isn't happening here, at all, to any religion, I fail to see the point of this comparison.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:43 AM) Which is why Dick Cheney has been campaigning loudly to get the whole story told. As long as it isn't him telling it. That guy is seriously whacked in the head.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:45 AM) Which is why it is important to get starters their innings now. If you aren't stretching these guys out, you aren't going to be able to get long games out of them, and then you start to make Carrasco, Egbert, and Richard more important than you really want them to be. They are arcing them in - that is my take, anyway. The long relivers will do a lot early, and late, in the season.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) Although the other starters are doing well, none of them are going very deep into the games. Thus my use of tense - WILL. Its early in the season and it is cold, they aren't lengthening out quite yet.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) SLC had the Olympics in 2002. Nagano was 1998. Wouldn't that be a bigger blow against a US city than against a Japanese one? Good point, but, the US is so much larger in every measure than Japan... for Olympic purposes, if you look at history and frequency, the US is less like a country and more like a region. The equivalent for Chicago would be if Milwaukee had the winter Olympics recently.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:28 AM) The problem with that is games like last night that are very close when the move could have been made...are Carrasco, Egbert or Richard capable of going 2-3 innings and keeping the team in the game? Last night, they definitely weren't, although Jose did himself no favors with his lack of control. You seem to think that teams all over baseball have 7 shut-down relievers in their bullpens. They do not. Our bullpen is among the best, in the back 4. And the other three - currently Carrasco, Richard and Egbert - are no worse than what most teams have. And they can all go 3 innings. Guys who can do that, and are shut-down at it, are incredibly rare, and usually get converted into starters or late inning guys anyway. Plus, with the fact that the other starters are all doing very well, they will go deep into games, so the bullpen can be saved a bit for covering Contreras/Colon. Contreras (and possibly Colon) will lengthen out with time. No need to panic just yet.
  23. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:14 AM) We can't even get Metra to run efficient train service (Heritage Corridor). 2 trains/dialy in and out is not good service. The problem is the big freight haulers, BNI CSX etc., own the right of ways. Until the gov't steps in and mandates some change on their part there will be no change in the service that is provided. I've said before, I really like the general idea of what the Brits did. They turned the rails into a utility-like structure, where they are not owned by businesses - the lines are cooperatively owned and operated by everyone using them, and no one gets special precedence. Decisions on schedule conflicts and what not are actually made at a higher level, involving all parties. Users pay into the maintenance "pot". It would work far better than what we have now.
