Why would this be a big surprise? I mean, you have to figure, even if some mass extinction event occurs, there will always be a few stragglers that survive, unless the atmosphere becomes fully toxic. Makes sense there would be some remaining pockets of dinosaurs here and there, surviving for a little while. Just hard to say how many and for how long.
