  1. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 08:01 PM) How is Posey for MVP ridiculous? On a side note, Keith Law picked the White Sox to win by 2 games. I thought about making a thread but then realized 40 posts of "Keith Law hates the White Sox" without anyone having actual proof, isn't fun. I'll give him a point or two for that. He's still down ~285138 points though.
  2. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 07:52 PM) Well it's time to flip that switch. A slow start is not going to work this year. It starts on Friday. To win your division you need to beat your division. If last April/May left as bad a taste in the Sox' mouths as it did in mine, we'll be fine. I think they'll be pretty motivated out the gate.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 06:53 PM) A platoon with 2 guys who can combine for a .380 wOBA is bad? Huh? Haha yeah, that actually sounds like one of the better RF platoons to me... Again, if Q proves he just isn't going to find that Q!perman phone booth, platoon away. Just gotta let a few months play out first.
  4. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 06:20 PM) He should be loading the luggage in the bus right now. He can't reach the overhead compartments
  5. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 06:09 PM) Why is Lillibridge still playing? Aren't they leaving...like in an hour? He's the 25th man, he's walking
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) They won the AL Central last year with Justin Morneau missing the 2nd half of the season. The entire half. If he's back to full-health, they've improved significantly by inserting a f***ing MVP into the lineup. He still has trouble dealing with crowd noise, that's how dysfunctional his brain is. I have no doubt he'll hit while he's up, but brains don't heal that well. He's a mild collision away from being out for the season, possibly his career.
  7. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 02:14 PM) Passan and Brown have a good discussion on the AL central on Yahoo, and make a valid point: the twins get Morneau and Nathan back. Sure, they've lost some bullpen depth, but it's essentially the same team with an upgrade at 2b. Both the Sox and kitties will have to raise their game significantly to beat them, but they both see the twins prevailing in the end. But Passan is high on the Sox. I don't discount the Twins in the slightest, but I've been following Morneau fairly closely (as I have had a vested Fantasy interest in him in my keeper league), and I trust him about as far as I can throw him. And I bench ~95. I trust a pitcher coming off of Tommy John even less until they've had a year's worth of pitching under their belt. Sure, they get them back, but for how long and at what effectiveness level? I would put a sig bet on Morneau playing less than 100 games.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 02:11 PM) With Milledge probably making the team, the White Sox have a perfect platoon situation. Milledge rakes against left handed pitchers, something that Quentin and Teahen fail to do. Of course, Ozzie will probably NEVER do this on a regular basis, but there is the possibility that he could do something like this on a Sunday get-away game or when he wants to rest his starters. Milledge vs. LHP Career: 510 PA, .289, 13 HR, .350 wOBA 2010: 145 PA, ..400 wOBA Quentin vs. RHP Career: 1239 PA, .266, 70 HR, .370 wOBA 2010: 393 PA, .253, 20 HR, .361 wOBA Teahen vs. RHP Career: 2120 PA, .274, 51 HR, .332 wOBA 2010: 221 PA, .276, 4 HR, .336 wOBA The best combination will be Milledge and Quentin. Not to mention Milledge is most likely a better defender than Quentin. There's not too many good platoon situations, but this looks like a pretty good situation for that to happen. Even though it probably won't. I'd rather take the first couple of months to see if Quentin can rake on his own. If he can't, I have no problem with a platoon. If he can, though, I want him getting regular AB's. Q at his best >> Half-time Q and half-time Milledge.
  9. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) Pfft...who cares? It's not out of the question, but that would mean the Twins are going to stay constant (doubtful) while the Tigers vastly improve (very doubtful). Yah, I don't actually care, but they have us winning 84 games which is somewhat interesting, I suppose. I guess they thought we moved backwards in talent?
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) That's the major criticism of Joe Buck. He shows no emotion whatsoever. See, I don't think that's quite it because he has slobbery man-love for the Yankees/Red Sox/Cubs, so if it was one of them I think he might pee his pants. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) OTOH, you've got guys like Chris Berman, who screams "OH NO!" when Graffanino misses a ball. It's nicer to have bland than it is to have a guy rooting against your team. Okay you picked the one person I prefer Joe Buck to. One is the Hindenburg, the other is the Titanic. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) I thought it was that he is a smug prick? THIS!
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 12:17 PM) Well, that certainly was a writeup of the 2011 White Sox roster. Nothing more, nothing less. Yah, that was pretty weak. I guess I shouldn't have expected much. Anyone else see/hear that SI has us third in the division though?
  12. Does anyone else think Joe Buck's call in the 2005 WS was one of the worst ever? Every time they replay it on that Score commercial, it's like nails on a chalkboard. "Juan Uribe with a play, charging it, throwing it..." So...freaking...LAZY!!!! What kind of description is that? "A guy, does a thing, and someone is out, I guess." My grandma could call that play better and she barely knows where she is! What a terrible broadcaster. /aside
  13. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 08:52 AM) Probably pretty low odds...WTF is gluten free beer? That has to taste TERRIBLE. A friend of mine has a gluten issue, I forget what the technical term is and I'm too lazy to look it up really quick, and I feel bad for him...he says he had to give up everything that tasted good in the world. :/ Gluten free beer is actually not bad. Red Bridge is made by Anhueiser-Busch and it's a sorghum beer. Tastes better than Bud, easy, but not as good as, say, Bell's or microbrew stuff. It's definitely serviceable. If your friend hasn't tried it, you should make him. And the technical term is Celiac disease. And yes, pretty much everything delicious is off the board except nachos. All the stuff you guys are talking about is torture to my poor celiac soul but beer is what hurts the most
  14. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 05:49 PM) You are on the right track. What is the point of Beckham sacrificing or cutting down on his swing to get Juan from first to second or second to third with Dunn coming up? So, Juan leads off with a bunt single, steals second and Beckham gets him to third... why? Against any righty Dunn gets intentionally walked; Against a lefty you have risked Juan's leadoff hit/stealing 2nd/taking the bat out of Beckhams hand for about a 10% chance that Dunn's atbat ends with a sacrifice fly instead of an extra base hit/strikeout/other out. There is no point of playing "small ball" in front of Dunn batting third. Another problem is you have Rios following Dunn and Konerko, which will dramatically cut down on his ability to use his speed on offense. When your team is anchored by Dunn, Konerko, Quentin; Juan Pierre doesn't make a lick of sense offensively. If you must play Juan, why not have our first three play a little baseball ahead of the three "power walkers"? Two points: even though Dunn strikes out a lot, his FB% is approaching infinity so he more than likely gets the sac with a runner on 3rd. Secondly, if they intentionally walk him to get to Konerko, that's an extra run when PK launches one. i.e an IBB to Dunn is not a given considering who's protecting him.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 08:36 AM) 10 wins against the Twins. Then what!? THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME!!
  16. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 01:05 AM) Well don't you think they have people in charge of their network that have considered all these things? I am not privy to the inner workings of ESPN, but my guess is that they understand there is a certain segment of their audience that gets alienated by the Red Sox/Yankees coverage, however, the ratings they get are enough to trump this. You can never please all of the people all of the time, so you just try to please as many of them as you can as much of the time. The challenge is to find that sweet spot which results in the big ratings from the Yanks/Red Sox games and the Cubs/Cards games, while still keeping around as many fans of the other teams and casual fans as possible. And I am certain they have poured plenty of research into finding where that is. I'm sure you're right, but often times business are too shortsighted to worry about their image long-term. I wouldn't discount the possibility that ESPN continues to progress towards becoming YES/NESN 2 in order to milk as much Atlantic money as possible to their long-term detriment as they lose credibility. Not saying it'll happen, but I also don't buy that just because companies spend a lot of money on a problem, they will necessary come to the long-term best conclusion. Short-term almost always wins.
  17. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 12:32 AM) Maybe we can see if we can get a prize this year. Maybe an autographed something or other. I'll autograph something or other and the winner can have that. /helpful
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 29, 2011 -> 12:39 AM) It doesn't? I don't know if this is true or not, but it seems as though their pretty obvious bias has gotten under the skin of enough fans that it could eventually be a problem. I, for one, only watch ESPN when they have a game on that I want to see. I don't watch it for highlights anymore at all, simply because I find their choice of coverage obnoxious. They may be winning over a few fans but they might be alienating a lot more in the process. I'm sure their finger is on the pulse of this issue much more than mine, but some balanced coverage and non-meathead/sensationalist analysis might get them some people back.
  19. What are the odds of them selling a gluten free beer? Ballgames just haven't been the same since I had to give up regular beer....
  20. Pulled the trigger, now he's dead. mamaaa!!!!
  21. QUOTE (since56 @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 05:28 PM) I don't want Marquez, but I don't see why we need both Milli and Lilli on the bench. Maybe the waiver wire can give us another pitcher......Silva? Milli + Lilli makes a versatile, dangerous bench player. Marquez makes a gas can to pour on the occasional poor start. We have the roster spot, we don't want to give Lilli up for nothing (he WOULD get claimed off of waivers) so why not? No Silva for me, thanks. P.S. On an ancillary note, in another thread someone mentioned that Silva's contract was better than Teahen's. I wonder if they still feel that way...
  22. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 05:31 PM) Is this real life? I think it might stay like this forever
  23. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 03:42 PM) So if I was just looking to watch the game with a bunch of sox fans Key West is the place to go? I have a friend who goes to the Cellar all the time but she is a Cubby fan so meh on that. Why is she your friend? Are you using her for something? Money? Power? /green
  24. Interesting. Me likey. I'm no grand Lillibridge fan, but he does provide reliable defense in a lot of places. Good emergency plan in case Vizquel decides to act his age.
  25. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) To me it makes no sense to leadoff Pierre, if Dunn is hitting third. I personally would solve this by finding a new LF, but since that isn't going to happen.... this would be my lineup: Pierre Beckham Rios Dunn Konerko Quentin Pierzynski Ramirez Morel Explain? Just because you don't need speed to score on a homer?
