QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 08:56 PM) So far pretty underwhelming meetings for the Sox. Kenny is leaving tomorrow. Not the greatest time to be a Sox fan, seems like this team, this board, and this fan base are in disarray. To be fair, that part isn't new. It's an internet message board, I'm astounded we're as collected as we are I think it's a pretty decent time to be a Sox fan, though, as I still have memories of a World Series. Couldn't say that in the early/mid 90's, even. Plus, rebuilds just mean you have to be a different kind of fan. One that focuses more on young players with potential. Unless we are signing a 30-year mortgage like the Pirates...ughhh.

Why in god's name would we sign a washed up vet in a year where we're ostensibly not contending, even for the league minimum? Just for fun? We're fine at OF. I see it posted that we have "nothing to lose" but we have nothing to gain, either. What, do you want him to be a professor of grindiness? Ozzie's gone, and hopefully so is that sort of silliness.
-
I just hope he has a bunch more successful seasons so he can enter the HOF at the age of 92 with a Sox cap on
-
Miss him already Maybe they'll let him tarp slide down there.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 03:34 AM) Phil Rogers said a few weeks ago that Santos was being shopped to other teams, so if he knew its hard to believe not the rest of the league knew about it.. EDIT: okay, so that image link isn't working. It was a blind squirrel.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) That was my initial, posted reaction. However, this involves Cowley, so most of Soxtalk can only hate on him. Spiegel sounded like the fat moron he is. Wait, regardless of Speigel's composure, do you think Cowley has essentially been acting as a mouthpiece for the Guillens? And do you think he attacks KW on a personal level rather than a professional one? If not, have you ever read his articles or tweets? It's pretty indisputable that he
-
Wowwww. Crazy interview. I get what Cowley's trying to say, that only one side of the story will be told when the other side refuses to talk, but it's very, very clear that he's being a petulant child about KW's silence rather than a responsible reporter. Good to see someone call Cowley's out on his childishness.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 04:17 PM) Honestly, what would that be worth? like $50 million maybe? Depends, does said record come with a World Series title? The only thing that will redeem Peavy is playoff domination. Could happen.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) Unfortunately, yup. Green? Has to be green, right? I've been absent for a couple of months so my finger is off the pulse of Soxtalk.

This season is a statement on organizational resiliency

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) If the Sox refused to hand out large contracts we would pretty much be the laughingstock of baseball. Yup. There are other teams that don't, and they are perpetually in the basement. Not that I'm advocating that the Royals and Pirates start inking huge contracts until they have a core built, but that's the situation where you stop taking risks: when you're terrible. We are not yet terrible and it's not time to slam on the brakes. Exception: Atlanta, and even they dole out the occasional chunk of change. Plus, they are clearly the most consistent scouters in baseball so they are anomalous as well. And let us not pretend like we really broke the bank for Dunn. Jason Werth got $23597923M to Dunn's $56M. Dunn's contract is nowhere near the risk ceiling in baseball. -
2nd place, it's happening!

I think trying to generalize lessons from an anomalous situation is a mistake. You don't structure your policy around the surest possible thing failing. If you do, you will lose indefinitely. -

Holy crap, I leave for 3 days and I come back to panic mode? That's... Okay so if you want to panic, do so because our talented bullpen has failed us. There's no room to complain about the offense or rotation, where most of the payroll is invested, because they've been good. Is this thread meant to suggest that they wish we'd spent more money on bullpen arms? If so, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY disagree. Signing bullpen arms to large money is risky business and is not as likely to give us a return as an expensive Rios or Dunn or even Peavy is. Seriously, just because people are justifiably upset with bullpen blowups does not give them carte blanche to rewrite history or bash whatever the he'll they please. There is sooo much freaking time left. We were well below .500 last year, yet led the division in July last year. So wtf are people sh**ing their pants over? Call me back in a month if the issues are the same, Christ.

QUOTE (TitoMB @ Apr 16, 2011 -> 06:34 PM) I think I'm utterly confused. Nevermind. No, no, I'm with you. I just read through the thread and lol'd but I would like to be sure that Felix is kidding. If he's not, though, I might have to sacrifice my computer to the Internet gods to appease them.

I....what? Has it been confirmed that Felix was kidding?

It'll Take a Brave Manager to Change Mindset on Starters
ScottyDo replied to greg775's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 06:02 PM) Removing dominant starters after eight innings really is a sucky part of modern baseball. Is there any proof one more inning, considering the adrenaline the pitcher would have, helps ruin arms? Mark and Danks should have completed easy, clean, victories recently. These clean victories can set a tone for a season. Instead we see what happens when you start anew and bring in a reliever. I say we need a brave manager or GM or owner (Nolan Ryan) to say "f*** pitch counts" when starters are dominant through eight. Let 'em finish their masterpieces. Did Picasso let some clown finish his work at the end? I think they would have finished these games, were we later in the season. Plus, I think Ozzie's theory thusfar has been to try and build some confidence for the 'pen so we can break out of the spiral. Unfortunately, there's no lead large enough to do that with, apparently, so we may have to resort to your suggestion. Also, the bolded is a great idea. Maybe he would have put that chick's eye next to her other eye if someone had played mop-up for him in the late innings. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 05:59 PM) WHAT THE f***? I turned off the game at 3:30 and they were up 4-1. DAMMIT! Ahh, so it's YOUR fault. You're fired.

QUOTE (Wedge @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) I agree that at this point Santos should get a shot closing, but I don't think there's really much evidence to suggest he'll succeed in the role. There really isn't much to suggest he'll fail, either. He's a total unknown and I don't think that warrants full time promotion for the rest of the season. I think what I'm discovering is that there is never any evidence to suggest whether or not someone will succeed until they've actually done it. I mean, you can't have a much better track record than Thornton's, and he's been a miserable flop thus far. I say try out Santos and see if he can get it done.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) I've only heard highlights, haven't been able to see any games live yet, so it might be just be in the small sample that I've heard that Hawk sounds different. He sounds old. He sounds like he has a new accent. Did he get new teeth? Am I crazy? No, he just lost the old ones

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) Anyone know how many games we have lead after 8 innings? I would venture to guess that our record would be about 9-3 or 10-2 had games ended after 8. I do believe we're 0-4 in saves (or 4-4 in blown saves, if you're a glass-half-full of diarrhea type of person), if that answers your question

I give up. Everybody sucks. Can't think of who to blame anymore.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 08:35 AM) Ozzie is upset with the fans for getting on Pierre and now Rios for dropping balls. The White Sox have officially dropped 5 fly balls so far this year, with another couple questionable. Maybe Ozzie is just trying to protect his players, although he throws them under a bus occassionally, but if people are charged a lot of money to watch a game and guys are paid as much as those two, I think its more than reasonable to expect them to make plays high school kids make routinely. He said he doesn't care about the boos, but he doesn't like the Bronx cheers. I actually don't really care for those either, because you're not just letting them hear it when they suck but when they do what they're supposed to as well. However, I get that you can do what you want when you pay for tickets. I just won't participate in the Bronx cheers, personally. Of course, this assumes that players even give a crap what the crowd does. I think they do, somewhat, when it's the home crowd.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 13, 2011 -> 11:53 AM) Castro two games this series? Is AJ hurting or something? Also, for a good laugh check out Castro's profile picture on ESPN. I don't think the MLB photographers count to 3 before they snap those things.
