  1. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 12:15 PM) I agree with you here. The Cubs grew a national fan base when Harry and Steve were broadcasting nationally on WGN (Reinsdorf and Einhorn's fault), and the Sox lost a decent chunk of their fan base after Reinsdorf's hard-line stance tanked the '94 season with the Sox in first place. Those are the two major reasons for the disparity in popularity between the two franchises. Except the White Sox leanest attendance years happened while Carry was still here.
  2. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 10:33 AM) I am sure that local cable has a higher subscriber rate than Sportsvision's 20k to 30k. Except their network won't be on local cable to start. It is an absolute certainty that they will not be on TV anymore in the entire Chicago network. The Yankees and Dodgers haven't been able to do that.
  3. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 10:11 AM) Enter the "JR and Einhorn blunders" you mentioned earlier. They took the Sox off of superstation WGN and hid them away on the ill-fated SportsVision, while simultaneously allowing Harry Caray to go to the Cubs to become the rockstar he would become promoting them on WGN, and POOF! The Cubs were the clear-cut #1 team in Chicago by the mid '80s, and have been ever since. The funny thing is the Cubs are about to go start their own cable network. If this theory is right, the Sox should be back in no time.

  5. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 09:43 AM) I'd legit go with Lochte QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 09:47 AM) Yeah thats not even much of a contest really. Lochte actually has a college degree Lochte is smart, just a pompous entitled douche. Rose, is a legitimate moron.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 09:47 AM) At the same time, the libertarian party's domestic and foreign policy platforms aren't exactly mainstream either. Honestly I think small government and non-intervention are more popular than you think, especially after the last decade.
  7. That was a pretty solid write up too. I really love how they made the case against Trump and Clinton, and very clearly stated their both abandoning the center of the country.
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 06:13 AM) Apparently Rose is having issues learning the triangle http://www.slamonline.com/nba/derrick-rose...7768LeByRR3g.97 Considering he couldn't take his own SATs, is anyone surprised by that?
  9. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 07:55 PM) Exactly. Reinsdorf's lease has some nice incentives, but it doesn't even begin to make up for the increased revenue from increased ticket sales. Also consider that most people drive to the ballpark and, of those, the Sox get $20 in parking for every 2-4 of those folks. And each person probably spends $10-$30 on food/beer at the ballpark. Each of those tickets has more spending at the park to go with it, not to mention the things like bigger advertising dollars from having more people watching games, higher ratings etc.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:29 PM) Ugh, I remember the day I tried to make a subforum. I was exhausted for a week. Back in my day we'd spend hours pinning topics. AND WE LIKED IT!
  11. QUOTE (captain54 @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:18 PM) Yes, I see... it's hard to follow bits and pieces of posts scattered about.. You said: To further expand on this. Even if the Sox ran the table, and made another $100 million, they would STILL be closer to Tampa in revenue than the Yankees. If the Sox had a 40% increase in revenue, they would be tied for 5th in MLB with the Cubs in incoming $$... Yes, they'd still be closer to Tampa in $$ than the Yankees, but so would 25 other teams, so .. who cares? the bigger issue.. why are the White Sox the smallest revenue earning franchise, among big city teams, in all of MLB? not even being able to crack the top 15? Because the White Sox are the 2nd team in the smallest market with multiple teams.
  12. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:15 PM) 2K5 would've been had half this board banned if it was up to him though lol. [scribbles on "ban list"]
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:51 PM) Nope. That was top half though...the White Sox were #16 coming into the season. If we can't operate in that 8-16 space (and 8 was the franchise value according to Forbes less than a decade ago), what's the point? It must have been someone else then. They literally just posted that all of the top revenue teams except for two are on the verge of playoff births, while only one low revenue team is.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) Good stuff. How much time do you think school board/city council seat would be in your town? City Council is a pretty heavy burden. Those guys have meetings every two weeks, plus they serve on 5 to 6 committees each, and there are mandatory board positions that have to be filled by members of the council. I would bet most of the good ones put in a good 20 to 30 hours a week on average. Even the bad ones have probably 10 to 15 hours of obligations. The Mayor probably works 70 to 80 hours a week. Technically Council is a part time job that pays about 20k a year. School board is probably the most variable. The good ones serve probably 15 to 20 hours a week between meetings and being involved in school functions. A couple of them barely show up for meetings.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:04 PM) That's genuinely awesome that you're that involved in your community. Ha. Seriously appreciate that the mods here are not petty at all and don't let their power go to their head just because someone is arguing with them. Never once been concerned that people would be unfairly or arbitrarily banned here. I appreciate that. I actually enjoy doing almost all of it.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:03 PM) The first time I ran, it was on a whim because a seat opened up about a year before the election and the superintendent was an absolute scumbag. I didn't get to fill the temporary seat, and I ran in the full election too. I finished 3rd of 3, but made some good headway. I actually took the domain I bought to run for the election and made it into a local message board. Overtime I turned it into more of a political forumn and op-ed platform. I ran the second time four years later, and did a lot better. I have been asked to run again in the last two elections, but decided that was going to be my last run, until at least my kids were older. I have stayed largely in the public domain more than ever, both being on the local Planning Commission, an Economic Development group, and serving on a not-for-profit board as a President for five years. The social media aspect of my webpage has over 7500 members now, so I have a nice following there. I think if I decided to run again, I would have a really good chance at winning, but with everything else in life, I don't have the free time to serve an office well anymore. Maybe once the kids are older I will give a shot at an actual political office. I also just became my high schools SID for all intents and purposes. I run their sports website for them, and supply lots of their content, which started at the end of this summer. Their hit count has tripled since I took over [/humble brag]
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 04:02 PM) right, now it is 100% conservatives who ban everyone at the drop of a hat Remind me to ban you later. K? Tnx.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:57 PM) ss2k5, were you involved in PTA beforehand or just visible in public meetings? The first time I ran, it was on a whim because a seat opened up about a year before the election and the superintendent was an absolute scumbag. I didn't get to fill the temporary seat, and I ran in the full election too. I finished 3rd of 3, but made some good headway. 19. QUOTE (Reddy @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:54 PM) Um... most of the mods lean conservative, and as such, I've been gangbanged on numerous occasions yet still post my "bs", so.... the martyr card doesn't totally work for ya bud. Uh, no. Not even close.
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:47 PM) I have to imagine that just getting your name out there in a local race and even just reminding people "hey there's an election this April" (or whatever non-Presidential year you're running in) matters a lot more than campaign spending for federal offices, at least on a vote-per-dollar basis. That's where even a small amount of funding for signs, ads in local papers, local events, etc. can really help. Yeah, if you can find ways to be involved in stuff ahead of time, it helps a lot. If you can find a wedge issue to stand behind, or a local crusade to be behind, it is easy and cheap name recognition. The hardest part of running locally is getting people to know who you are.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) And you won right? I covered school board in columbia, and at the time 2 won having raised 8k and 6k. But really what that signified was the two big civic groups had donated 5k to each of the candidates they chose and surprise! They won. I lost. Took 2nd in a 4 person race, losing to the person that spent $6k by about 10 percentage points. I did beat the incumbant.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) But there's no correlation there with winning recently...and the Yankees, especially in terms of the World Series. Otoh, you can obviously compete where the Royals, Astros, Pirates, Indians, etc., are in terms of revenues but the margin of error is that much much smaller. That's why you have also the Red Sox bouncing up and down but having the ability every year to finish in first, at least, if things go right. The common denominator is a superior farm system talent and quality depth. Nobody has ever compared the Sox with the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, Dodgers or Cubs. It's irrelevant. Of course, we only hear how Ilitch is creating a train wreck with reckless spending in Detroit, but the Tigers' fans have had a good product there to consume for going on 11 years now at least. Finally, Minnesota, Cleveland and KC all have/had much smaller revenue streams than the Sox the last 15+ years and almost always seem to kick our butts, too. Tampa Bay has been much more cost-efficient as well, since you name-dropped them. Didn't you just post that all of the teams in post season contention are all top revenue teams except for one?
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:34 PM) Jesus. I'd rather take a trip to Hawaii I spent under $500, as did almost everyone else. The problem is it only takes one.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 03:05 PM) Thats nuts. Its always pay to play regardless of how small I guess. When I ran for school board the 2nd time the woman I ran against spent $6k. She spent more by herself than the entire other 12 candidates combined for the all four open seats.
  25. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 02:57 PM) Probably still not super cheap and would help to be tied into whatever the existing political organizations/communities are in the area. It took $50k to win the Mayor's office in my town of 30k people.
