Official 2008-2009 NHL Thread
QUOTE (The Critic @ May 22, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) Sorry, but that was not an interference penalty. If you wanted to call an elbow, maybe, but the puck was between Havlat's feet so there's no way that was interference. And certainly not a 5-minute interference. I agree, and so does Eddie O. And FWIW, I have a sneaking suspscion that not scoring on that 5 minute PP, is going to bite the Hawks.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
So the pregame interview with Kenny was pretty clear that they are probably negotiating still... He was very eager to say that Peavy was surprised that the Sox offer came along, and that it was so early in the year. His big concern was family negotations according to KW. It was all very nice, and kissing his butt essentially. He said they are still open to the deal, but that they were NOT waiting on it, and that they could still do a different deal if it came along.

5/21 Games
QUOTE (scenario @ May 22, 2009 -> 10:15 AM) He sucked in April... batting .143 in 70 at-bats. Looks pretty good in May... batting .324 in 71 at-bats... including going 15-38 (.395) over his last 10 games. Also, he struck out 20 times in April... only 5 times so far in May. Sounds like he's adjusted to the pitching in low-A. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 22, 2009 -> 10:37 AM) And he's still only 20 years old and less than two years removed from being the 33rd overall pick out of high school. At this point in his career, writing him and saying he sucks is ignorant Gilmore really seems to be following the Brandon Allen career arc. He seems to be adjusting slowly to each level, but he is on the young end for the leagues he is at. Once he figures it out, he goes crazy. It will be interesting to keep an eye on him.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ May 22, 2009 -> 01:38 PM) You're 100% right and it's poor reporting if that's not being pointed out. Levine on AM 1000 yesterday stressed the Cubs are in no position right no to "add a dime" currently and then even going forward with the new owners, it seems DeRosa is on the market and the Cubs can't even add his contract at this point. Not to mention the Pads didn't like what they were offering last year and I don't see how it could have possibly got any better. Why hasn't anyone picked up on this??? Without a three way deal, sending some very good players out of Wrigley, the Cubs can't afford Jake Peavy. Heck its not even that they can't afford him, they don't even have anyone to ask if they can raise the payroll right now. Do you really think a bankruptcy court is going to authorize the Tribune to spend $11 million without any extra revenue coming from this deal? Uh, no. Ricketts couldn't do anything even if he wanted to, until the deal is approved, and from the sounds of it, he is having problems raising the billion dollars or so that they bid for the team because of the recession. Peavy's options are a lot more limited than he thinks right now.

Forman to be new Bulls GM.
I would have rather had Abe Froman.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
OK, how, with the Cubs in bankruptcy court, and their sale stalled, are they going to be able to add payroll? They already have payroll concerns stated by Jim Hendry for 2010 and beyond when their biggest earners start go get into their balloon years. How did this all change?

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) Yeah I know, but... it just seems so not Kenny, after Peavy turned them down that way. That's why I was shocked at the statement... But Kenny has left the door open to multiple pursuits of players before, so I guess it makes sense. He just wants to make the team as good as possible. Stepping back and thinking about it, think of all of the players that Kenny has made a serious effort to go after in his time as GM... Arod, Randy Johnson, Carlos Delgado, Darrin Erstad (while he was still good), Larry Walker, Torii Hunter, Fukodome... and I am sure there are plenty I am forgetting. And now you can add Peavy to that list.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 22, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) Wait, what? Its not over yet? I'd be shocked if KW of all people would let Peavy publically reject him, and still acquire him, at the ridiculous terms he is supposedly asking for. Actually, the rejection aside, if the rumors are true about Peavy wanting opt-outs each year AND full option guarantees, given what we have to give up in trade, I am no longer sure I'd want to do this deal. That opt-out is the killer. Without that, I'd still seriously consider it. With it, I think its a no. Kenny's public statement left the door WIDE open...

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (kwolf68 @ May 22, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) I don't get what else could be there from Peavy's perspective. He asked for everything and then some. Easy, if one of his big wishes doesn't come calling, he can always drop some of his demands. The NTC would be an easy thing to drop, or he could be willing to accept some deferred money.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2009 -> 10:30 AM) According to Barry Rozner, this isn't over yet. Kenny left the door open yesterday with the "as of yet" cavet, and Axelrod didn't close the door on this either. I am surprised more writers didn't pick up on what we got here at Soxtalk yesterday.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 22, 2009 -> 09:37 AM) Just curious, but what's the record? I'd imagine it would be from the WS winner or maybe even the Freddy Garcia trade day 10-26-2005 3628 posts. Not close to the record, but almost one of the 10 busiest days in Soxtalks nearly 7 year history.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
Mainly because of the Peavy roller coaster, Soxtalk had 2340 posts yesterday.

The Democrat Thread

Payroll
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:00 PM) So the money is there. After all. Since JR OK'd this deal, for a pitcher no less....which he's known to not want on long term deals... Then what was the problem with spending relatively little dough on Hudson, Abreu...make the deal in one way or another for Figgins... AND keep the farm system's best players. Why give away the young talent when we couldve done a lot more in free agency to solidify this team? That's a lack of foresight. Unless they just absolutely completely love Peavy alone. As had been said before, this is how it works for the Sox. Annually they get a budget number from the Board of Directors for the organization. Pretty much Kenny has to stay within that number. Occasionally Kenny will target someone who takes them out of this range, and he will go back to Jerry and ask for a special consideration to chase after this specific player. Much like us, just because they give special allowance for something specific, it doesn't mean they can spend the money on anything. Think of your own budget. You have your own spending limits, but maybe for something very specific you might talk to the wife and get permission to whip out the credit card just this one time. It doesn't mean you have more money, just that you are willing to make a one time exception in this case. Now I am sure my budgetary stalker will be here later with the "Sox are cheap" speech...

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:23 PM) The White Sox are going to have some cash to play with for a couple of years, however if a few of the Barons pan out, they will all be hitting their arb years together. Some will be bought through them some will not. It would be a shame to have to rid yourself of a good young player because you foolishly guaranteed a $22 million option in a trade 4 years earlier. One thing about pitchers, its not a question of if they are going to get hurt but when. So essentially, you are agreeing with the Sox payroll approach... awesome

We have a turkey on this team!
QUOTE (daa84 @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:17 PM) so now that the peavy deal is off....are we gonna see Poreda take Gobbles spot soon? I would imagine so...even Hahn said he'd prefer to take it slow with him I could see Aaron up as a reliever in a David Price situation where he could help us win important games on the way to the playoffs, otherwise the Sox see his biggest value as a starter, and with the kid trying to learn extra pitches, he needs those innings and repetitions to do it. He won't get them in the Sox pen pitching 2-3 innings a week. Poreda's best value to the Sox is as a starter with two plus pitches and a third and maybe forth pitch, and not as a reliever with a plus pitch and a second solid pitch. Think of Aaron right now as being a Matt Thornton at best today, but a guy with a #2 starter type ceiling if you give him 200-300 more innings of experience.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (G&T @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:45 PM) Rosenthal is only saying that the demands would not be as high for an NL team. I addressed this pages ago when I quoted the same language. We don't know what he would want from and NL team. Rosenthal thinks an NL team would not have to pick up the option, which would mean they wouldn't have to eat the whole contract. If you read the article he blames the Padres for the inability to move Peavy because they had better deals in place but Towers wouldn't pull the trigger. My opinion is that he is wrong. I think Peavy wants the option picked up no matter what, but what do I know. Towers is smart enough to realize he doesn't want his franchise player kicking his ass on a regular basis, even if Rosenthal isn't.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
I'm actually with Gage on this one (I'm scared, hold me) I can't hate a guy for 1. Liking the place he works/plays/lives or 2. Trying to get another year of his contract if he can, especially at $22 million Be honest, who here would have given up on $22 million right away? Who here would be willing to leave a job they liked, for a job at a company they didn't like as much, for the exact same amount of money? Maybe he will change his mind, or end up somewhere else, but in reality, he isn't acting any differently than anyone of us would have acted.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) Food for thought. KW didn't burn any bridges on this one. Going back and re-reading the statement, the at this time comment sure sounds like the Sox would be willing to revisit this deal if Jake was more interested.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (DanksFan @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:39 PM) Originally posted: May 21, 2009 White Sox's Ken Williams comments on Peavy rejection By Mark Gonzales White Sox general manager Ken Williams issued the following statement on Jake Peavy's declining of a trade from San Diego to Chicago: "It was communicated to me earlier this evening that Jake Peavy is simply not yet ready to make a commitment to join the Chicago White Sox. "I understand where Jake is coming from given the unusually early timing of this type of event. It's understandable that he was caught a bit off guard, as most people in his position would be. He has a wife and three young boys to consider, and Jake has earned the right to thoroughly think through this move. "He and his agent, Barry Axelrod, have been transparent in their thoughts, respectful and complimentary of what we have accomplished with the White Sox, and understand our desire to win another World Series title. I walk away with a greater respect and admiration for both as a result. "Anyone who has followed our club knows we still have championship aspirations for this season and will continue to improve our current club by pursuing all of our various opportunities." Someone needs to hire Kenny's speechwriter because you know that isn't what he was thinking when Peavy turned them down.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Ya, but you can't go to Peavy until something is done because in all fairness, the Sox are going to have to sell him on the fact and so many other things. Plus you don't want to constantly bother Peavy or really get too involved unless it is serious. I'm sure the Pads told Kenny there was a chance and if they could reach things than you could talk to Jake and try to swing something. It didn't work, no biggie. Not to mention the tampering implications from running around talking to other teams players about trades and contracts.
