  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 12:36 PM) that's pretty accurrate for someone his age. The difference will be that they will use an augmentation device to help the repair heal faster and have more tensile strength later on. So he will begin moving a little earlier than the 8-12 weeks. As I've stated before with all of his variables (size, age etc.) I would guess it to be about a year from surgery that he will be pitching for the Sox at the MLB level. I don't remember when he had surgery but that should be about the time frame. My experience was with my Dads achillies tear he had at about 34 years old. We were told then that the injury recovery didn't really have much to do with what kind of physical shape you were in. I guess they have made some advancements in the rehab process with the augmentation device. I really do hope that Jose can get well quicker than that. It would be like getting a front line pitcher in a deadline deal, while giving up nothing for him.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 12:47 PM) Honestly, I'd really rather not see Poreda in the pen. The main thing keeping him from being an MLB ready starter is a successful 3rd pitch, I think he's been working on a slider quite a bit. If he's coming out of the pen, he'll never be using his 3rd pitch in a game situation. I'd rather have him getting innings. But Hey, if he earns the bullpen slot and the team goes with it, then maybe he can learn it in the pen. I think unless Jenks was moved without getting another closer candidate in return, I'd also rather see Poreda getting his innings. I will keep saying that this is exactly why Andy Sisco never amounted to anything at the major league level. He never got the chance to get regular innings to hone his secondary pitches and perfect his repeatablility and arm slot. Poreda needs to work on all of these things if we really want to make him a servicable major leaguer.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) The guy skipped out on thousands in taxes over multiple years, and took offset money for payments he didn't make. And, again I point out, this is the TREASURY secretary nominee we are talking about. I don't care if everything else is perfect, to me, this make him a non-starter. Unfortunately, he will probably be confirmed anyway. Its funny, people yell about things like Richardson maybe steering funds to a certain campaign-friendly construction company, or the Clintons getting campaign money from places that were benefited by government actions. Those are accusations unproven, and even if true, are not (IMO) at as bad a level as knowingly evading large amounts of taxes, which is what Geithner did. Richardson and Clinton's actions are admittedly a lot more gray. In this case we would literally be putting a should-be felon into the cabinet.
  4. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 11:33 AM) No, it's not a complicated one. He KNEW he needed to pay the taxes, he even got an extra check just to cover the taxes. he even signed a form saying that he would use this extra check to pay the taxes that he owed. If he is that stupid, he doesn't desrve that kind of a job. http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YzJjO...jhlMWQ2MWZiNTA= That kind of blatent disregard for the tax laws would land you or me in jail. This guy is just another rich asshole gaming the system because he thinks he can get away with it, and hoping now that his 'friends' and connections can get him out of it. Jail him! Wow. That is pretty incredible.
  5. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) Looks like the deal is official now The White Sox and Colon have agreed on a one-year, $1 million contract, the club announced Thursday. Under terms of the deal, Colon is eligible to earn an additional $2 million during the 2009 season based upon innings pitched. For that price, it's well worth the risk. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...sp&c_id=cws WOW. I am not surprised by the up front money, but the incentives are nothing. That is officially a steal. A rookie costs us $500,000, so even if we cut him early, we barely lose more than we would have given to anyone else.
  6. QUOTE (TheBlackSox8 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 10:01 PM) all i'm waiting for now is Lost and Burn Notice to start back up....then I will be set for a couple months. Watching the season finale recap with the pop ups, has me all fired up for next week!
  7. Woo-Hoo TEX IS BUYING TICKETS TO THE SOFTBALL/PATIO PARTY THIS YEAR!!!
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:06 AM) Sep. 29, 2008 - 10:37 a.m. ET According to the Chicago Sun Times, the "best-case scenario" for Jose Contreras' return from a torn Achilles' tendon next season is "late July or early August." The newspaper adds that "even that was doubtful because of the severity of the injury" and speculates that he may have pitched his last game for the White Sox. ''Things are going well mentally, but it isn't something I can rush,'' Contreras said. ''I know it's something that is going to take time.'' Are there any more recent stories anywhere about Contreras' rehab/comeback? I haven't heard anything new, but it makes sense. A full achillies tear is a major rehab. They go in and stitch the thing back together in the surgery. Then you have to wait a long ( I want to say like 8-12 weeks) to make sure that it grew back together properly. Once you have that, then they begin a very basic rehab to get you back simple range of motion and strength. Once that is done, then you actually start to resume some normal activity. After that, then you can get into some more challenging activities. The problem is that once you have a tear, it is very easy to re-tear, which is why every step take so long. When they say a year to recover, that is very realistic from my experiences. Hopefully Ptac sees this and can give some more medical details.
  9. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 08:23 AM) Correct me if my perceptions are wrong. Comparing a couple sox pitchers. Wednesday afternoon in May before a crowd of 6,000 Colon goes 6 innings, gives up 5 earned, appears almost asleep. Freddy goes 7 gives up 5 at home, 3 on the road Javy goes 8, gives up 1 earned Buerhle goes 7, gives up 4, looks relaxed and having fun Saturday night in late September at Yankee stadium, playoff spot on the line. 70,000 fans Colon goes 8, gives up 3, filthy in the 6-7-8 Freddy goes 8, gives up 3, pissed he's pulled, wants to finish Javy goes 3, gives up 8, leaves no out and the bases loaded. May have crapped/pissed his pants Buerhle goes 7, gives up 4, looks relaxed and having fun Looks about right to me.
  10. Its amazing already how many of the pointless arguements have switched side, yet the things that remain important aren't really changing. Am I the only one thinking that after the 8-9 weeks between the election and inauguration?
  11. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 09:41 PM) The Angels and Chone Figgins avoided arbitration by agreeing to a 1 year, $5.775M deal today. So for those of you wondering how much he'll make this season, there you go. So that makes a one for one Dye/Konerko type deal make perfect sense for both teams. The Sox get their leadoff hitter and free up about $6 million in payroll. The Angels get their right handed thumper they have been looking for... which means the deal will never happen.
  12. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 07:35 PM) Pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Worst case scenario, the Sox end up with kids at #4 and 5 anyway. Worth a shot. Plus, it gave everyone a chance to clear the fat jokes out of the comedy warehouse! Good times! Good point.
  13. Interesting. Colon was #3 on my depth chart of Ex-Sox pitchers most likely to return, but it makes sense. He gets to come back to a place he had success, and he knows the organization. He gets a chance to prove he is still effective, while the Sox get to give him one year on the cheap and try to protect themselves against having too many question marks on the staff. I like it.

  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) The restisting cities are falling one by one. They are falling because one by one they are rushing to get a better deal by not being the last one to agree to the merger. The local residents are still threatening tons of lawsuits if this ever gets off of the blackboard.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) They will fall A LOT more rapidly if the federal government comes in and says "We're paying for this chunk". Actually in this case two companies are paying for it.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 11:26 AM) So, for a counter-example, the UK has had a similar tax for years. Has that tax crippled the UK any more than any other financial market? Until Sarbanes Oxley, the US was burying the rest of the world in tradng volume and listings. I would say that until that point it was obvious that the rest of the world came to the US for its markets. Now as the government as gotten more involved, that advantage has disipated, and people have started going overseas when possible. If you start taxing the very people who make a market liquid, yes, it will hurt more. Its basic economic sense that the more something costs, the less of it that will be demanded. In a world wide setting the UK is no where near the many other world markets.

  20. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) Which has always troubled me. Wouldn't you want to do business with those people that share your ideals? The same people that would naturally support you? Basically we want the GOP to support Dem businesses and vice versa, Doesn't make sense. If you are an ag business, needing guest workers, would you donate to me, or one of our pro-border wall types? Now once I am elected, wouldn't I also support a guest worker program, as I have stated here forever? The someone looks back and sees someone donated and then received favorable actions and believes it was pay to play? I understand the dangers, but this area is always less cut and dried than first glance. They are charging a sitting governor with this, amongst other things. If we say it is illegal in Rod Blago's case, why isn't it illegal when the future Secretary of State does it?
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) I'd suggest those are three different issues, only one of which is a vetting one - Commerce (Richardson). They failed to recognize the problem there. It may turn out to be nothing, but he's under investigation. With Treas, I'm frankly very disappointed with the fact that the FOUND those tax irregularities in the vetting process, but decided to proceed with him anyway. Really poor judgement. As for State, I am not sure there is really any fire there, to be honest. And this coming from someone who really dislikes Hillary Clinton. With Hillary, these types of allegations have been floating around for a very long time. They finally got their records released and there was a direct link with certian companies receiving favorable actions after giving money to Bill's fund. That is pretty much the definition of pay for play.
  22. QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 09:45 AM) Jeter will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. There will be at least one writer who says, "Jeter is overrated because he's a Yankee; Jeter dates better-looking women than I do; Jeter didn't deserve the Gold Glove!" Same with Maddux. "He spit on the ball," or someone will say, "He played in the steroid era," or who says, "Maddux never gave straight answers to questions. He always gave Bull Durham nonsense." I hope you don't seriously think it's a possibility, especially not for someone like Jeter. No one is going to get 100%. Ever. By the way, I don't know why people care about the exact percentages. Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb weren't unanimous; Walter Johnson, no. No one has ever been and to worry whether or not they should be is to worry about something ultimately unimportant and unrealistic. You mean Jeter and won't be unanimous, correct? There is no way those guys won't be first ballot HOFers.
  23. If we are just giving money away, here is a way to give each taxpayer or business up to a 7.65% return to each employee depending on how it was done. They also get personal kudos from me for actually referencing actual history, instead of just policital BS, by referencing Japans banking collapse. http://www.aei.org/publications/filter.all.../pub_detail.asp
  24. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 07:56 PM) http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090113/D95MGFTO1.html May belong in the cabinet thread instead, but just imagine if this were to be you or me? On one hand we're assured he's brilliant and possesses a steel-trap mind for finance. On the other hand, he "forgot" that he had to pay taxes in America. Sec Commerce-Pay for Play Sec State-Pay for Play Sec Treas- Tax evader, possible immigration violator. lol. So much for surrounding himself with better people. This is the ethics and change we have all been waiting for, right? Not to mention everyone who made fun of the Palin vetting process, probably needs to grab a second plate for the crow they are eating now.
  25. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) I honestly don't see that up for debate. He is in every way a first ballot Hall of Famer. I would say so, but I have no idea how writers outside of Chicago view his career today.
