  1. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 06:58 AM) The funny thing is (believe it or not) I tend to be more of a "social liberal" or that is to say "libertarian", which all the social conservatives go apepoopoo over. My stance on that is people can do what they want and the government needs to stay out of it. That drives social conservatives batty because they want government to dictate, say marriage, and I think it should be left alone and the states deal with it. You have hit me on the head. I don't think the government should be in my wallet or my bedroom.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 01:06 PM) That won't necessarily last. I'd rather see this country be out in front of the technology, than behind it. Much better for us economically. And now that decades of consumer choices have driven the prices to the point that they are today, you are seeing that happen WITHOUT government intervention. Like I always say, if there is a profit motivation to do something, someone out there will be doing it.
  3. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 10:27 PM) He'll pitch tomorrow IMO, and if he pitches well, I can see him and Broadway going to Seattle for Washburn. Just a thought. They are both on the 40 man roster and would have to clear waivers for that to happen. In other words, forget about it.
  4. Also worth noting, this was a win where we did not hit a homer.
  5. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) I was speaking to corporations that "reported trillions of dollars in sales" per GAO's estimate, while making these sales over the last eight years, and then paying NO Federal Income Taxes. That, which was described by the article. Companies escaping the payment of taxes specifically due to depreciation, operating losses, or because of tax credits were not in the wrong. You do realize that you can have huge numbers in sales and still lose money, right? For example GM had something like $43 billion dollars in sales last quarter alone. They didn't pay a dime in taxes. The line about "trillions of dollars" in sales is a garbage statement because all that does it take an aggregate of everyone who didn't have to pay taxes to make the article look more impressive. Its bad reporting.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:54 PM) I look at this year a little differently. If someone told you March 30th that as of 8/13: Both Buerhle and Vazquez would be below .500 Bobby Jenks would have 22 strikeouts Scott Linebrink would miss over 1 month of the season There would be more than a couple posts that Octavio Dotel shouldn't be used in close games Nick Swisher would commonly be refered to as "dirty .230" Paul Konerko could only wish he was hitting .230 Joe Crede's back would go out again and Juan Uribe would be the 3rd baseman Jim Thome didn't hit the first 2 1/2 months Wasserman,Russell,Carrasco,Broadway would all be recalled from Charlotte. Contreras would be hurt. Win 7 games and be lost for the season. Horacio Ramirez would be acquired because Boone Logan was horrible. Cabrera would have several issues with teammates and management. I don't think anyone would say first place was even a remote possibility. Everyone mentions the Sox faults, and obviously there are many. A lot of people are afraid of the Twins, and maybe rightfully so, but everytime they grab first place, the Sox take it right back. This team is different. They haven't got all the breaks. Just like I said from day one in this thread... That is why you enjoy every victory and forget every defeat. People waste too much time on who is right, and who is wrong.... On who sucks and who is the star. Forget all of the peripheral crap, and enjoy the game of baseball for what it is. You get a lot more out of it that way.
  7. Jackinthebox>>>>>the rest
  8. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) For all the times he gets hit, our team just doesnt retaliate-its our reputation so he keeps getting drilled I'm sure getting a pitcher or two suspended would really help our pitching depth problems
  9. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 11:45 AM) Who pays the people who defend your freedom? Who pays the service men and women in our communities to recruit civilians in order to provide for the common defense? The Federal Government. Article I of the Constitution vests Congress with the power to raise and support military forces to provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States." Where does Congress get the power to raise and support our military? Federal dollars. Unless compulsatory service becomes policy, dodging these necessary payments weakens the ability of of the armed forces to attract men and women who have the skills needed for the Nations defense. No, I probably won't walk away from my belief that it is treasonous not to pay one's share over an eight-year period as alleged in the report. Companies create more revenues for the US tax base than anyone or anything else in the country. They must be the greatest patriots ever! By the way dodging taxes has a connotation of being illegal. If there is an illegal activity here, that is very different than following existing laws. If you have a problem with the laws, you need to start calling the Congress traitors, because they are the ones who wrote the tax code.
  10. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 10:49 AM) Either option would be ok, but I think he needs to be in Charlotte at some point next season, with the way he's been hitting this season. Personally I would like to see him stay in B-ham and get the playoff experience.
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 10:08 AM) I would argue it's very different than what's in place today. It dramatically increases funding to alternative energy, increases taxes on oil, makes off-shore drilling "states rights", sets a goal of 85% non-oil based cars in 20 year (i think it was 20 years). It's a pretty drastic in my opinion. Higher taxes with gasoline still $4 a gallon is pretty drastic IMO as well.
  12. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) Thanks. Small sample size in B-Ham with only 86AB's, but he's got a .942 OPS there with 6 HR's and a 22/15 K/BB ratio. He also has a 1.114 OPS in games away from B-Ham. I'd move him up to Charlotte next season, and see if he's the guy who can take over 1B from 2010 (depending on what we do with Konerko, Swisher, Griffey etc.). He is still really young. At least starting at B-ham would be a fine idea by me.
  13. Usually I wouldn't post anything from the Enquirer, but then again, they are the ones who have been right on this story from day one, so here goes... http://www.nationalenquirer.com/john_edwar...celebrity/65288
  14. QUOTE (Fotop @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:39 AM) Isn't the dollar at 6 month highs right now though? Also think there's probably easier ways to put that view on outside of acquiring some theme parks... Granted, I think it's a solid play if they're trying to get their foot in the door in terms of having businesses in North America (specifically the US) but I just don't get why they'd want to do that in the first place. It seems to me their resources have been focused on making their home a tourist destination, why stray from that plan? Diversification would be the main reason, I suppose, but it's counter-intiuitive to their nationalistic strategy. The dollar is at historical lows, even with the short-term bounceback. Dubai has invested LOTS of money in the US, and they have always been interested in the bigger pieces.
  15. QUOTE (Fotop @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:21 AM) Just don't understand why Dubai would want it in the first place though. They're building their own supermega theme park in Dubai already. From a business perspective, I guess it would make sense if they got it on the cheap but it seems like there's plenty of bidders to drive the price out of the "undervalued" range. They do have the deepest pockets though, that's for sure. I am guessing because they think the dollar is cheap and is going to rebound pretty well, along with the economy.
  16. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) he's been hit in five straight games. don't know if that is a record. No need to find out. Elias has gone back to 1920, and on one has ever done it during that time span.
  17. Great Ebay auction of the day... http://cgi.ebay.com/EMPTY-CONDOM-PACKET-A-...t=1218636824817
  18. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) Do you see ana cross the board drop in wages and benefits, or will it be stratisfied? I keep thinking we're going to see a "coming to the middle". I'd love to see where I said anything like that. I gave the effect of rising costs on business with very clear real world examples. I'd love to see how you gave raises and hired more people in the face of higher taxes/costs in your business though.
  19. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 05:29 PM) The U.S. companies that dodge paying federal income taxes are guilty of treason in my view. No offense, but this statement is a loaded bowl of crap. Unless you can back it up, you probably should walk away.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) I am not sure, but I thought you only have som many claims that you are allowed to make? And besides, maybe they think Boston having Byrd will help THEM instead of Boston. I could have sworn that I read in previous years you were limited to so many claims per day. I know you can only "waive" 7 players a day, and I thought it was a part of the strategy to dump them out there in bunches to make sure that all of them couldn't be claimed, and to try to "protect" the guys you want to clear so that you can get something for them. I scoured Google eariler and couldn't find that bit of info. If anyone else knows where it is at, that would be great.
  21. I would never get elected President because I am not afraid of how the world works. There are counter-arguements out there, but I believe the current and historical results speak to what would portend the future.
  22. Well so much for that idea... I wonder if Kenny every had a chance with Shapiro?
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 01:05 PM) I finally found someone nice enough to put it in graphical form yesterday...heres' the oil price graph over the last few years. In terms of total dollars, the oil price correction we're seeing right now is the biggest...but in terms of percentage drop, it's somewhere right in the middle (the price is down another $5 or so from the point this graph was made, so the %age drop is around 18% now I think). Someones math is wrong. The top for Crude was $147.90 It is currently at 113.20 as we speak. That is down about 23.5%. The lows of the last few days of 112.21 are very close to down a full 25% from the all time highs.
