Policy Initiatives for Rising Gas Costs
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 08:25 AM) It's the reaction by the GOP that I find silly. Sure they can dispute his assumptions/calculations regarding ANWR but they are making it out as if the only proposal for energy he has is proper tire pressure. That is just ludicrous as he laid out a very comprehensive energy plan this week (side note: I don't fully agree with his plan). Kinda like 100 years of war being the McCain Iraq plan? I will agree that the reaction has been ridiculous, but the statement was pretty full of hot air as well.

Policy Initiatives for Rising Gas Costs
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 08:08 AM) Here's a fun read: LINK If McCain had said it, they would be treating it like some old man gaffe. Its not the tire pressure comment per se, its the line AFTER that which makes it incredibly wrong. Obama wasn't just saying that inflating your tires helps, he actually said that if everyone did it, it would be the same as all of the off-shore drilling would be. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/ken-shepherd/...amas-tire-gaffe "There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy," Obama said. "Making sure your tires are properly inflated - simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling - if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You'd actually save just as much!" As I mentioned in my July 31 blog, Power Line's John Hinderaker demonstrated how Obama's claims are not just silly-sounding, they are mathematically impossible.: Americans drive approximately 2,880 billion miles per year. If we average 24 mpg, we use around 120 billion gallons of gasoline in our vehicles. If, through perfect tire inflation, we improved our collective fuel efficiency by 1.5%, that would be 1.8 billion gallons. A barrel of oil produces around 20 gallons of gasoline, so the total savings available through tire inflation is approximately 90,000,000 barrels of oil annually. How does this stack up against "all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling?" ANWR: 10 billion barrels Outer Continental Shelf: 18 billion barrels (estimated; the actual total is undoubtedly much higher, since exploration has been banned) Oil shale: 1 trillion barrels So, on the above assumptions, it would take only 11,308 years of proper tire inflation to equal "all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling."

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 08:01 AM) DING! Also, what is your comment about the following quote? I took this fron Ben Stien's column on yahoo this week. It has to do with taking delivery. If people take delivery, that is true demand.

Policy Initiatives for Rising Gas Costs
The irony is everyone is throwing around all of these ideas, but the best thing for alternative energies is high oil prices. I really believe that is why the Dems are fighting things that would bring down oil prices in the short-term so hard. Some of their highest leaders are knee deep in the start ups of those types of companies.

Name a VP and Vett
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 08:23 PM) Send ss2k to him to see how he deals with a potentially dangerous situation.... Maybe I could just call myself a "consultant" and get paid assloads of money to smack around politicians. I like it.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 08:22 PM) Daniels, by all accounts, is a f***ing idiot. But I don't live there anymore, I just hear it from people who do. That's pretty accurate. His ideas aren't as bad as some would have you believe, but he has a Bush way of getting things done.

Tornado sirens
We have the sirens go off a few times year out by us in Michigan City. They went off last night, and we had 100 mph winds and damage to the casino. It was crazy.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) They don't get on camera all that often, but I think it's safe to say that GWBush has an enormous number of "Fringe, overzealous supporters", especially within the Christian movements. Just thinking of all the people saying things like "We're so happy that God is back in the White House" (not necessarily calling him Quentin but calling him an agent of Quentin) back in the years he was campaigning. Is it fair to not vote for Mr. Bush based on them, without any regards to how Mr. Bush personally acts or behaves? Yet how many people voted for someone else for those very reasons? How many people dismissed Ron Paul because of his supporters being nuts. Is it right, not really. It it a fact of life? It sure is.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 04:17 PM) If someone is willing to change their vote for the most important position in our country because of a poster on a baseball message board... So how about motivating someone who was probably not going to vote for someone to instead actively work against them? I think it is funny that everyone is all mighty about this, but stop and think of how many people on this very site hate Cubs/Red Sox/Yankees because of their in your face fans. Then take a step back and think about how shallow this country is. Hell people are willing to vote for Obama because he "excites them". It is really so hard to think that others would vote for someone else because this supporters piss them off? Its not a stretch to me. Heck its those same followers that have annoyed me to the point where I was looking for anti-Obama material to post to just balance out the propaganda I was seeing daily. I lost respect for the candidate because of the people supporting him were just too unbearable. Its like a freaking cult. Heck, Ron Paul's followers ought to be taking notes because they are stinking amatuers in this light.

Good for Ozzie. This rant is exactly why the players love him. He is perfectly willing to take a bullet for the guys who are willing to go the wall for him.

The Internet Comes to Armour Square Park: Softball game article
QUOTE (DumpJerry @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 05:17 PM) The weather was the reason for the small turnout. We had 21 or so people at WSI say they wanted to play and most of them were coming from far-out suburbs. It was raining buckets that day, so I don't blame them for not making the trip (unless they had tickets to the Sox game that evening). I think next year we should shoot for a September date. The weather is better then and the Sox game that night will be more important because of the date. The problem is that the kids are back in school and college then. It doesn't work for us too well.

The Waiver Wire
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2008 -> 04:58 PM) It's basically always leaked. Most teams will try to put anyone out there that they think has a remote shot of getting through just in case a spectacular trade offer comes along. I think we tried to see if Buehrle and Garland could pass through in 05, for example. But it's always leaked, that info is never officially published. As I understand it, every player gets put through waivers. Basically they put clumps of players out at the sametime to try to "hide" the players they are trying to slip through. That way no one is quite sure what a team is up to. Because you can only claim so many players, it increases your chances of sneaking through the players you want to deal.

Policy Initiatives for Rising Gas Costs
I said it with the stimulus package and I will say it again, this is grandstanding and almost economically pointless. Also punative measures against any corporation, let alone the ones who control our infrastructure are shortsighted and functionally brain dead.

White Sox Player/Pitcher of the Month: July
I went with Thome and MB. Thome had more big hits than anyone in the last month. He was clutch all of July. I also went with Buehrle because it felt like he has the best month, but it was hard to pick a pitcher to vote for. Ugh.

Your second place Chicago White Sox
Just wanted to throw a couple of things out here... #1 For those who like to throw judgements out on player, posters, the team etc, don't be surprised when the same stick gets applied to measure yourself. If you don't like the spotlight on yourself, you probably shouldn't be so eager to shine it on others. #2 This is a board of Sox fans. People want to see the Sox win because they enjoy it. Most people like to take the positive experience out of stuff, and leave the negative behind. Why dwell on the bad parts of something that is supposed to provide entertainment, not to make up your lives. I know for a small vocal minority, being a fan means that a loss has to ruin your life, but most don't have time, nor the desire, to play that type of drama queen. #3 If there is a problem with the people on this board, or the way that it is run, there are other options for your posting enjoyment. No one is forced to stay here. Heck if it seems so easy to manage 4000+ posters and nearly 2 million posts, feel free to make a run at it yourself. #4 Don't forget the rules of personal attacks and the like. The whole reason that these exist is to make the experience here open, but respectful to some extent. You don't have to like the post or the person delivering the message, but you can't attack them. Also, just because you edit a post, doesn't mean you get away with the attack. In fact in the end, it is only going to make things worse, because then one of us has to dig into the database if the post gets reported, and that will only piss that person off more. #5 As always, we are open to discussion of whatever is going on here. You can feel free to vent on the board, IM, email, or PM. Contact your favorite mod/admin with comments, concerns, ideas etc.
