  1. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 10:45 AM) As I was reading your post, I'm wondering if perhaps we are in a period of some people forgetting and needing to remember? Many of the people involved are dead, and many more will be over the next few years. I could see at some point in the future where Robinson is relegated to a smaller remembrance each year. This is about a human need, and just like 9/11 Vigils have gotten smaller and smaller, so too are ones to people like Ruth. Reading some of the responses, I believe some people think we are already there. Just an incomplete thought and another log on the fire . . . How many people hold rememberences on Pearl Harbor Day? We as a country do ourselves such a disservice by not understanding where we came from, and avoiding those same pitfalls.
  2. Under $1000 would be nice, less would be even better...
  3. While we are asking questions, anyone want to recommend a solid laptop for someone who needs to run a bunch of streaming programs for trading, without it having a crazy price tag?
  4. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 08:18 AM) I'm not prepared in the least. In fact, I'm outright scared out of my mind. Cute pics Mike. How did Maddy handle the new one? Surprisingly well actually. We were really worried, because she was the first grandkid for both sides of the family, and frankly pretty fond of the attention that status brought her. We really tried to include her into things, but also not to force her to do anything. It took a while before she wanted to participate, but now she has really warmed up to her sister. There is still some jealous streaks, but in general, she gives us more problems with typical two year old stuff, than she does to do with her sister.

  6. http://boringtheworld.blogspot.com/2008/04...y-together.html Hey Ribbie, I guess that answers my question on if they are "born that way" or not!
  7. After reading this thread and shaking my head many different times, I just want to add the following historical quote. "Those who do not learn from their history are doomed to repeat it."
  8. QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) Not trying to open up Pandora's Box or anything, but anyone else thinking it could be Alexei getting sent down to work on hitting breakers when it's time for Richar to come up and not Ando? I really hope so... He really needs a lot of ABs just seeing junk pitches.
  9. Well that explains a lot of his problems... That's too bad. I really wanted to see this kid rebuilt and succeed. Its sad but being a Rule V draft pick might have actually ruined his career. I think if he stays in the minors, gets his innings, masters his release point, gets his repititions etc, he really develops into a tough starter. The kid just never got any consistancy, because he was bouncing around the bullpens instead.

  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 10:22 AM) OK. I'm not going to stop anyone from posting negative bits on the candidates, go right ahead. It just seems to be a bit much with the nitpicky things about Clinton. Heck I don't like her as a candidate either, but, it gets a bit much. I agree 100%. It has gotten incredibly detrimental to this thread. It really is the same kind of teardown your opponent techniques that the Clintons are famous for, and it hard to say it hasn't soured my respect for Obama as a candidate. In my opinion is the same kind of tired politics that has drawn people to Obama in the first place. If his surrogates are going to do it for him, he will get whipped in the general election.
  12. QUOTE (FLsouthsider @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 08:30 AM) Rebuttal to what? Your willingness to pay $8 for a hot dog? Baseball is a business and the team is maximizing revenues. Just not out of my wallet. I don't even live in Chicago anymore, so I'm not exactly the club's target market. However, pardon me if I think it's a long-term mistake to squeeze families and casual fans, turn them upside down and shake every last nickel out of their pockets before they leave the stadium. I didn't say I was happy about it, there you read into what I said too far. The complaint for decades was that the owners were getting rich off of the Sox. This has never been true. There was also the complaint that our payroll was too low for being in the 3rd largest city in the US. Now we have the 5th largest payroll in all of MLB, including higher than that crosstown team who happened to draw about 1 million more fans and made the playoffs last year. Let me ask you flat out, would you rather have higher prices and a higher payroll, or lower prices and a lower payroll? Because those are your choices when it comes to White Sox baseball.
  13. Wow, we were that close to having Denny McClain? Wow how history would have been different with him on that late 60's pitching staff.
  14. QUOTE (FLsouthsider @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 08:04 AM) Wow. Jerry Reinsdorf and Bud Selig just added you to their Christmas card list. If you have a rebuttal, I would love to hear it.
  15. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 04:44 PM) All players should wear #42 that day, and the players that don't want to honor Jackie Robinson in that way can pretend that they are honoring Douglas Adams. You mean its not Ron Kittle day? Anyways, I really like the idea of everyone doing it, but at very least I would like to see the minority players do it. His entrance into MLB means EVERYTHING to them. I'd like to see them do it, not because they HAVE to, but because they WANT to.
  16. QUOTE (joeynach @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) Seriously it is, inflation is like what 2-3% on average. Yet the price of a beer has gone up 75-80% in the last 3 seasons. Sounds more like greed than simple economics, though we have seen much higher payrolls. Yet, no one from the team has acknowledged any sort of link between the price of concessions and parking to the amount of payroll the team can absorb. What do they need to acknowledge? The Sox have the 5th highest payroll in major league baseball. It has gone up very close to 50% since 2005. For the one Chicago franchise that puts all of its profits back on to the field, that means they need to get the money from somewhere... Yes winning has its price. For all of the people who were pissed when we had a middle of the pack payroll, this is the price you pay the piper. We could go back to having cheap concessions, cheap parking, and a half empty stadium, but that would also require the team to go back to a $75 million payroll. There is cost for everything. You want to run with the big dogs, it will cost you.
  17. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 06:31 AM) http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=169141 Translation: I know the Sox aren't going to give Joe the biggest contract offer, but I am leaving the door open for them to surprise me.
  18. 71 points to 88 points in one season is a quantum leap. With the kids the Hawks have in the system, plus their willingness to try to make a bid deal tell me that they are really going to make a big splash this off season. I can't wait to see what happens. And what a great year! Seriously who would have bet before this season on 88 points and the preformances of Kane and Toews?
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 05:27 PM) Christ, the season is over after 7 games? Would you please step the f*** back and realize that there are 155 left? Seriously, it's April. I love that the Tigers suck, but they aren't going to go 0-162, and they aren't going to finish in last place (barring some more injuries to their lineup). Funny, I heard many people saying the Sox season was over in something like Nov of last year...
  20. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 01:53 PM) The bigger the difference, the more I'd be thinking of splitting. When I was running the Men's Golf Assiciation events at my club we would add up the number of places we were paying and divide by that number, so the drops were not that big. For example $1,000 paid 5 ways would be 1+2+3+4+5=15 $1000/15 =$66 So the prize money would be $333, 264, 198, 132, 66. Less of an incentive to split. The events that use a different formula create a situation where it becomes more of an issue. I've also seen in some rules where agreements like that are against the rules of the event. Chess was like that, and guys would have these 20 move draws, shake hands, and leave. Disappointing for those that were hoping for an exciting game. Did you just use "chess" and "exciting" in the same sentence?
  21. I love how patient this guy is already as a young hitter. Just the extra pitches seen by Swish, OCab, and CQ, are going to cost starting pitchers an inning an outing, meaning we get to feast off of middle relievers instead of set up men and closers. You can just see the potential bursting at the seams with this kid. Hopefully the injuries were of the Jermaine Dye/cluke category, because this kid can hit if he is healthy.
  22. QUOTE (Good Guys @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) First time poster here. This site is great by way. I have seen a couple things that have got me very excited. First off the game against Verlander. While sitting there watching that game there was not one time I really felt the Sox were in danger of losing. Just a much different attitude from last year when there seemed to be no fight. The second thing is the aggressive style of play that we've seen. The Sox are going right at these other teams. That throw from Quentin to nail Renteria.... I can't remember the last time I saw a White Sox player make a play like that. For me it has been more than an encouraging start to the season. What a fun team to watch so far. Hope they can keep it up. Go Sox. Great first post and welcome to Soxtalk!
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 08:16 AM) I disagree just because of the fact that it would it would increase the number of vetos and number of times an override is needed, at least in theory (I could be completely wrong about this if it goes another way in practice too). That in and of itself upsets the balance, even if only a little. I think at first it will increase the number of vetos, but I think it will also cut down on the garbage bundling of riders onto legitmately good bills, not to mention the opposite to play the gotcha games in the elections (oh you voted to make orphans homeless, what a horrible person, nevermind it was a two line riders to a bill to fund AIDS research). I really believe overall, you will improve congressional effeciency.
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 07:36 AM) I think that's a good idea in principle, but my main problem with that is that it disrupts the checks and balances system and gives the president too much power. I don't think it does at all. You still have the veto override chance. If your line item is important enough, hopefully 60% of your chamber feels the sameway.
  25. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 07:13 PM) I think I already told you that... Its one of those things you can't fully appreciate until you actually see the pimples on Pat Kane's face. Also, this is going to be the centerpiece of my White Sox collection. I can't wait to get this framed and up in my room of Sox stuff. It is an incredible find, I am so excited about it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...N:IT&ih=003
