  1. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 04:20 PM) Cubs are 10 games over, how is that "barely .500"They were just like 3 or 4 games over and got hot against Pittsurgh and Cincy. I guess I just don't follw them as closely as you do.

So in recognition of the Family Secrets trial, I went back and watched Casino again. Damn that was an exellent movie, and an incredible cast. I also saw Da Vinci Code over the weekend and gave it a meh. Holy Blood, Holy Grail was much more interesting.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) We have no idea what their payroll will be. Do you think they can afford $150 million?
  4. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 04:09 PM) I get the book every year, and in their team write ups they make a prediction on the upcoming season. 2005 I think the quote was "the window has closed". They really liked their chances last season, and this year said they weren't going to win anything. A lot of their staff is in Chicago, so I think the White Sox and Cubs get scrutinized a little more by them, but all in all for the other teams, they have a pretty good track record. BTW, they didn't think the Cubs would be .500 this season. The sad thing is that the Cubs barely are .500, and probably wouldn't be if they didn't play in the house of horrors that is the NL Central.

They don't have nearly the money to afford another $30 million a year on that backloaded payroll that they have.
  6. Bp also picked us for 4th place in 2005. Take it for what it is worth.
  7. I was impressed with Floyd today up until the 6th. Even in the 6th I was happy to see him hitting 92-93 out of the stretch. Once again, he so reminds me of the old Jon Garland it wasn't even funny. He'd get into a small jam and find a way to turn it into a big inning. I was also glad to see Ozzie give him a chance to pitch out of it. The only way he is going to learn is by taking his lumps, and I would rather see him take them now in meaningless games.
  8. The Pirates seem to be able to find young talented players through the draft and trades. If they started using the Indians method of signing them long term/cheap while they were young, they could win the s***ty NL Central.
  9. Or maybe a hangover from pitching deep into the offseason last year? Hmm...
  10. Javy has been our most consistant starter this year. It has been nice to see him live up to the salary he is getting.
  11. You forgot that the radar gun is off too...
  12. Don't look now, but Floyd is hitting 95 with his fastball, and looking tough again...
  13. I wonder if anyone will blink when he speaks this time?
  14. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 08:44 AM) No. He was once quoted at saying in a very indirect way that 9/11 was partially caused by factors in the Middle East that included western interference. And he was right. I find him to be more like a true, old school Republican than many other candidates, because he isn't some hyper-conservative crusader looking to make government just small enough to fit into everyone's personal lives. Paul is more interested in smaller, more efficient government. I have a lot of respect for that. Ron Paul is a RINO. He is a libertarian if I ever saw one.
  15. QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 11:15 AM) Is there any website that provides quarterly earnings in chart/graph format? Maybe. You can find most companies on stock trading sites. If you are looking for something specific I can help you out. I have access to some good stuff.
  16. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Sep 22, 2007 -> 05:51 PM) Sisco has options, IIRC. Cool. I hope so. I really want to see him get his innings as a starter. In the long run he will be a better pitcher for it. You just can't teach the arm that he has.
  17. I don't know if it got mentioned in the game thread or not, but that was as bad as I ever remember seeing Johan pitch. He was sitting 90-91 on his fastball, topping out at 92. The thing that was really bad was his change up. It had no bite to it like it usually does, and it wasn't in the usual 76-79 range, it was always at least 81, and I saw it as high as 84. I don't know if he is having problems or what, but I can see how he was beatable this year.
  18. QUOTE(NUKE @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:06 AM) The President has very little to do with the rate of exchange our dollar fetches on the open market. Currency traders do. The President does when he appoints a Federal Reserve Director who he knows is going to push down bond rates at a time when our currency is already under pressure.
  19. What no Fred Thompson is a big fat idiot, or other bad GOP news? Anyway, it would be nice if the world would help protect Israel, but I am not about to hold my breath. There is too much anti-semitism in Europe for this to actually happen.
  20. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 11:43 AM) It means now there really is no reason to gamble in Windsor. In 2002 and 2003, I used to cross over to play blackjack because every third bet was free. It was 3:2 when we went to Niagra Falls in June02. The trip was cheap because no one wanted to go to Canada after the border crossing horror stories, and the exchange rate was a bonus. Now I wouldn't be surprised to see the dollar in the 1.50 Euro range by New Years Day. I can't say enough how shorted sighted and stupid this rate cut was.
  21. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) Well, it would be a heck of a lot better thing to spend money on than Iraq. Numerous articles have pointed out that for all the money we've spent on Iraq, we could have made so many strides in alternative energy and energy reduction that we would be on the brink of being energy-independent. Not off oil entirely of course, but off it enough to go on just the US and Canadian resources we have access to. Can you really say that wouldn't have been a better idea? You want an honest answer? If it would have been done right, it would have been worth it. I believe that we should be trying to save people from persecution and genocide all over the world. Its a cause I believe in. The Bush admin was stupid and was too worried about trying to make the war seem as small as possible, that they didn't fight the war the way they should have. They didn't send enough troops, equiptment, or anything of that nature. If they actually take control of the country from the beginning, instead of hoping that nothing would happen, things would have been different. Instead the Bush admin was too worried public opinion, and it cost them in the end. Also we aren't going to achieve energy independence until the crude oil and other stocks run out. We as American's don't have the care to change our lifestyles enough for it to actually matter. We have gone from $1 to $3 gas in shorttime, and we STILL have had an increase in demand. Our behavior tells me that we don't care enough to change.
  22. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) Why the defeatist attitude? We wanted to put a man on the moon and we did. Now we can't match the ingenuity of Iceland? Defeatist attitude? Are we talking about Iraq or Iceland? Out of curiousity, how much of a tax hike are you willing to pay for right now to fund this? We can't afford the infrastructure that we have in this country right now, and you want to change all of our energy transportation and utilization? Its not ingenuity, its ability to pay for it. Personally I am not really in favor of forcing every person in the country to pay an incredible amount of money to do this, which is exactly what it would take.
  23. Great song, but I don't know about a movie...
  24. This definately qualifies as a thread of the year mention. Not because of the tread itself, but because of the marvelous responses. There were definately some posters at the top of their games in this thread!
  25. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 07:53 AM) I saw this morning that Dubai wants to buy part of Nasdaq - or something. Didn't get time to read it, just saw the headline. Man those boogers have some money. They want a 20% share. I can't wait to hear all of the racist reasons why it is wrong...
