  1. QUOTE(techgeekxp @ May 31, 2005 -> 06:08 PM) what do you mean? You don't think it is a little strange for someone to show up on a sportsboard, make no posts about sports, and then just start a trivia contest for the heck of it?
  2. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 03:08 PM) Castilla in 2005: 49 G, 173 AB, 21 R, 50 H, 3 SB, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 0.289 AVG, 0.363 OBP, 0.451 SLG% Chavez in 2005: 51 G, 202 AB, 19 R, 44 H, 0 SB, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 0.218 AVG, 0.276 OBP, 0.317 SLG% Cruddy in 2005: 50 G, 163 AB, 20 R, 37 H, 0 SB, 5 HR, 18 RBI, 0.227 AVG, 0.286 OBP, 0.368 SLG% His batting average also fell 45 points in May, where he managed to get 1 homer and 9 RBI... He is quickly falling back to earth and isn't worth getting.

  4. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) Timo at 1st base? :puke Well, we knew he would be in the lineup somewhere against Byrd. This is why we need the Choad back so badly. Timo has never played 1st base in his career but he has supposedly been fielding grounders there lately. I guess for all of the people who have been wanting to get rid of Konerko, this is be-care-ful-what-you-wish-for Day
  5. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:50 PM) I will really be mad if we got Chavez's overpaid ass and traded BMac for him. Do any of you focking realize Chavez is making money equivalent to what New York is paying ARod (since Rangers are paying a lot of ARod's salary still) and what St Louis is paying Pujols? Why the fock would a team like ours that is fiscally constrained want to trade for such a ridiculous contract when the guy under question is focking sucking this year? Do you all realize Beane is under more pressure to improve his team than Kenny is? So play the leverage game and fock Beane when you can. What of Beane knows Chavez was on the juice previously and hence is dying to let him go to a sucker soon? It is possible that Chavez could have been influenced by Giambi (team mates always pick up stuff from other team mates) When has Chavez's overpaid ass EVER won anything? Yes, you buy low, sell high. But not if that guy will be the highest paid player on your team. If we are willing to pay that ridiculous contract that Chavez is signed to, we should instead have traded Paulie in the off season and signed Delgado instead. A far better player that would be a monster in our home park. The Yankees are paying Arod $18 million, the Rangers are paying the other $7 mil. Pujols hasn't hit his free agency years which is why his contract looks so small, once he gets past his sixth year of service, you can bet his contract starts to hit the mid teens per year.
  6. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:49 PM) Never been done in either japan or korea. That actually shocks me. I wonder if it is the smaller ballparks not leaving much room for hits that does it?
  7. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:44 PM) Nope artie wilson hit .402 in 1948 for the birmingham black barons of the negro american league making him the last man to bat over .400 in professional baseball. Was a trick question. Well if you want to open it to all professional baseball, I am sure someone in Japan, or Korea, or the minors has done it.
  8. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) He hit .422. Anyway, does anyone know who the last professional baseball player is to hit over .400 in a season? Ted Williams .406, 1941
  9. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) Crap heap...that's a good one...I'll add it to my list of names for Wrigley...and Lincoln Park is still too close. Stickney is the place to be Nothing tops the Deadly Confines.
  10. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:22 PM) Ummm, Cotts started out as starting pitcher. Gagne also started out as a starting pitcher before he became a closer. Gagne also had almost 300 innings to figure things out before he moved to the pen. Neal had pitched about 80 innings coming into this year. If anything he is at a disadvantage again, because he isn't getting nearly the amount of work that some of these guys have, and is still putting up respectible numbers in only his second full year at the major league level. Its one thing to write off a Joe Crede who has had a few years at the majors, it is quite another to write off a Neal Cotts who has one full major league season under his belt, and under 100 innings of total major league experience.
  11. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:04 PM) Chavez would be a monster batting in front of Frank. Assuming Frank can actually stay healthy and produce anything near what he used to do.
  12. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:00 PM) Here's some food for thought. White sox team batting avg 1910 .211 the leader on the team was Patsy Dougherty with an avg of .248 That's an example how the rest of baseball was too. You don't think that affects a whip? Would you throw anything but strikes if you knew your competition was batting below .250? That's why no one ever got walked. It's not really about control. Which kinda voids the arguement about Frank Thomas's streak of .300 30 100 100 out the window doesn't it? Could Frank have put up any one of those numbers in 1910, let alone all of them? Not a chance.
  13. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:43 PM) Wild Pitches 1906-11-2 1907-14-1 1908-10-8 1911-8-7 1912-10-5 There was no such thing as a passed ball in that era.
  14. QUOTE(Jake @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:37 PM) i thought it was 50 and 50 Depends on whose version you hear. Another one saids you win 1/3, lose 1/3, and it is the other 1/3 that matter.
  15. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:32 PM) If the A's dont eat up any of his contract can the sox even afford him? Yes. We would let Paul Konerko walk away barring a WS apprearence giving us a ton of new payroll.
  16. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:19 PM) How much of Chavez's contract do you think the A's will eat. The more they are willing to take, the better the prospects. SB Not a dime.
  17. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:17 PM) You can look at those as well. ERA is pretty decent, WHIP is horrible at over 1.3. If you are going to use the argument that we haven't seen enough in 3 years to tell how good he is, I'll say that 15 or whatever innings he's thrown this year aren't enough to tell he is any better than in year's past. Like I said, to write him off already is premature IMO. Many, many, many pitchers take time to establish themselves in the majors. Cotts has pitched one full season up here, along with 2 stints of about 2 months each in 2 different seasons, I would hardly call that 3 years. Heck check these numbers out if you don't believe me. Greg Maddux first two seasons http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/maddugr01.shtml Tom Glavine's first two seasons http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/glavito02.shtml Javier Vazquez's first two seasons http://www.baseball-reference.com/v/vazquja01.shtml Eric Gagne's first two seasons http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/gagneer01.shtml
  18. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) He may turn out okay, I'm just tired of his defenders saying he is good now. He isn't. He needs more seasoning in AAA. I thought it was funny that people would think that if you threw out the starts that he was pretty good. A 4.86 ERA as a reliever is simply not good, whichever way you slice it. Unfortunately we don't have anyone else who can take his spot right now or do the job any better. If you want to judge how he is now, why wouldn't you just use his 2005 stats?
  19. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:08 PM) By the way, just FYI for all of the Cotts apologists: Numbers as a reliever: Innings worked: 79 and 2/3 Earned Runs: 43 ERA: 4.86 Walks: 38 Homers: 11 K: 72 Come on Alex, you should know better than to judge a guy based on 80 innings of work. Go back and pull up Greg Maddux's, or Randy Johnson's or Curt Schilling's first 80 innings and tell me what you see. I am not saying Neal will be a superstar, but that is a pretty short sighted bar you are using to deterimine a guys career.

  21. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:03 PM) To bad allstar voters dont realize that stealing bags and messing up pitchers mind works just as good as hitting the homerun! Welcome to Soxtalk
  22. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 01:01 PM) Lets meet somewhere down the middle. Say the 1970's. Frank probably would still have close to his numbers, ed walsh no way in hell would have a whip under 1. Sounds good to me. Personally I like to compare a players dominance within an era to decide how they would compare to someone else that wasn't playing at the sametime. I think Ed Walsh was about as good as you got during his time, so that is how he should be judged. On a side note, if you had to select a neutral era, where pitchers and hitters were about even, what do you think it would be? Obviously the last 15-20 years have been way skewed towards hitters, while up until the mid 1920's and the late 60's were the biggest pitchers eras.
  23. Also don't forget to make your picks to click... the competition seems to be waning, so now could be your chance to get ahead. Remember, there is a really cool autographed mini-helment for a prize.
