  1. The article is a good read, but essentially everything the Ricketts did to monetize the Cubs absolutely blew up in their faces.
  2. NBC Sports Chicago isn't going anywhere. Regular old NBC Sports Network is going away. Pretty much the only thing of substance on it is hockey anyway.
  3. Having up front tax hit is actually good because the actual contracts are back loaded. This allows us to dollar cost average some of the extensions so that their average amounts will be below contract values in the years we might actually have to worry about the tax.
  4. If he went by the boards, he would be looking at something like: 21- 6 mil 22-12 mil 23 -20 mil 24-32 mil 25-32 mil That works out to a touch over $100 million. I didn't quite put him up to the top level guys, (Cole maxed at $36, DeGrom 35, Stras 35) but realize that if he goes year to year 3 more times, he is probably staring at a 8/250 or more type of a deal, maybe as much as a $300 million type of deal. if he puts that off for a couple of years, you have to make it worthwhile for when he does. I think I worked out a deal at like 4 years 65 mil, with a 5th year at $25 mil for an option, so essentially a 5/90 type deal. Bonus 5 mil 21- 5 mil 22- 10 mil 23-15 mil 24-25 mil 25-25 mil (buyout 5 mil)
  5. I know there have been some talks about the Cubs and their financial situation, but this was a pretty good read on some things that their leadership group isn't talking about in regards to their finances. This was the wow moment for me. https://www.cubsinsider.com/2021/01/21/kris-bryant-confirms-cubs-were-bryce-harpers-preferred-destination-so-why-didnt-it-happen/
  6. Abreu alone is usually good for a two week DL trip.
  7. He will be there for at least a little bit unless he signs an extension. The fact the Sox are looking at Nelson Cruz could also mean that any Vaughn extension talks haven't gone well, so they aren't in a hurry to get him here. There would also be a role for Vaughn on this team even if the Sox sign Cruz for a year, especially if they can figure out a way to get him into the corner OF even in a minimal amount.
  8. I am sure they have talked, he is probably just trying to use COVID as a wedge to keep the price down. Maybe once all of this clears up, he is going to be willing to pick up the top number a bit.
  9. This. its 3 YEARS down the road. They aren't about to shoot themselves in the foot in 21 and 22 when they have designs on winning. Also, it is no surprise he is looking for something closer to market value than some of the extremely discounted deals that others have signed. You are going to have to meet him in the middle to have a chance at this.
  10. If we get a Nelson Cruz you achieve two things. #1, you hit the Twins batting order in the nuts #2, you hugely upgrade the DH position and its output. Once Vaughn clears service time considerations, he can find a place playing a few days a week off of the bench at DH/1B and he is also around in case of an injury #3, Sure I don't want a known cheater on the team, but with the guys we have already added this year, they obviously don't really care about character, so there is that.
  11. The other thing of note here is that he owned it. He didn't delete tweets. He didn't create a new account. This guy has some integrity, unlike most of the people who do this for attention and then try to cover their tracks when wrong.
  12. Again, we can't just pretend he sat in a cave last year. He was still going up against superior competition to what he would have seen on a daily basis. Do you think the last starter in a typical A+ team is going to give him more than the Sox top prospects are? That a AAA journey man reliever is going to show him more than a Garrett Crochet did? All of the chatter out of that camp was how these kids saw better competition in the camp than they would have by far in their regular MiLB work. You can't just handwave that way because there were no stats kept.
  13. Also, Juan Soto serves as a great example of someone who barely saw the minors, AND he was YEARS younger than Vaughn while doing it.
  14. What is amazing is how consistent he was. Dude never put up more than 47 HRs in a season.
  15. Literally the most American thing I can think of is looking to improve upon what we already have. If that is now "Liberal" thinking, well that explains why I left the Republican Party. All of the sudden it is being labeled as un-American to try to improve this country, as if you have to fall into line with conventional thinking, or get out. This country used to welcome people looking to improve it, and the lives of people in it. But now you can't out of fear you might make your political party, or its leader, look bad. As if party has become more important than country. It's sad. To be clear, the American response to COVID is 100% embarassing. If not the worst in the world, when you factor in the resources and ability we have in this country, it should be considered the worst in the world. The fact that the percentage of deaths we have versus our percentage of world population very clearly shows this failure.
  16. Right, because we have so many pandemic destroyed seasons to build rules off of.
  17. It wasn't batting practice. There is a pretty convincing argument that he spent his time going against MUCH better competition than he would have going to work against A+/AA/AAA back end talent. if you look at how bad the back half of those rosters are, he didn't see that kind of pitching last year.
  18. It would have to be long enough that you could convince MLB that it was a legitimate extension like they have given to others. Realistically, he would need to be on the verge of a call up, or already called up.
  19. I can't wait for a minor league season to happen, just so people can quit pretending that Andrew Vaughn sat in a cave all of last year.
