  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2010 -> 02:18 PM) At this stage of the season they'd do what they did in KC ... a 6:10 p.m. twinbill. And come right back on Sunday. It's not that easy. KC was able to have the traditional double header because their attendance was low enough to not cause dramatic effects. Baseball doesn't want lost revenue. Boston sells out all home games and they want both to remain as individually paid games. If you do a traditional twin bill now you automatically lose a game. If you can't do a day/night because of weather my guess is they'll still schedule an off day if there are any, or the day after the season if necessary. That way there's at least a possibility you don't lose the revenue from the game, if either team is in it.
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 31, 2010 -> 10:28 PM) It is dumb. Konerko's range has been pretty bad this year and even though he is pretty good at scooping bad throws, a lot of 1B are. Without his bat, Konerko wouldn't be a very valuable 1B. jesus this is tiresome. are you serious? even if paulie wasn't a decent defensive first baseman, which he is, hitting is 90% of the job of a 1b.
  3. QUOTE (almagest @ Aug 31, 2010 -> 03:56 PM) I'm sure that if you were in the top 10 in the world at what you do, you could get away with it. in most fields the top 10 in the world at what they do probably work 80+ hour weeks, 52 weeks a year.
  4. QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) Like a lot of people, I have reset my homerun records to 61 and 755. Why stop there? Maris was hopped up on greenies all season long.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 09:15 AM) If it's a 1 year deal as a DH only...and it's only like $2 million...and Manram actually signs the deal rather than just outright retiring...I think I could stomach that. I'd still reserve the right to chant "Steroids" every time he's up. Not gonna happen, I don't think Manny has the ability to play like he cares for less than $10mn/yr. He has zero interest in staying in the game just to get another ring or be on a contender. He's pretty much unsignable next year. He's not worth 10mn per year and there's about a 10% shot he tries for more than half a season if he gets less. With each year he also has that much less incentive to try for another contract when it's probably not coming. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 09:20 AM) True. And if he's stubborn about it, he'll be watching baseball in 2011, much like Jermaine Dye did in 2010. That bothered JD substantially more than it's going to bother Manny.
  6. Mully and Hanley reporting Harrell's facebook page said he's on his way today.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 12:01 PM) Eh, I only saw one brief video of it, maybe I needed to see it from 10 angles. But it looked like he knew he was dead, and tried to do something about it. Sure, but there's a limit to what a normal player might do vs what Delmon Young did, and it was certainly against the spirit of the game and along the lines of intentionally trying to injure a player. If AJ drops that ball a brawl probably takes place right there, furthering AJ's place in Twins lore. Ozzie's the most vocal manager in the game, for better and mostly worse, and his head is in the f**kin sand when we go to MN or they come here, it's pitiful.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 11:54 AM) What Young did was just smart baseball, he had no other chance to score. Not sure why it requires any sort of retaliation. no way, the normal play of running into a catcher is coming from 2nd on a throw from the OF, and it's never the attempt to go at the head of the catcher, especially when they're standing straight up. He went out of the basepath by 2 feet and went arms out at AJ's head, not quite an attempt to jar a ball loose or an occurrence you might see in the normal course of a game with a catcher blocking the plate. It's bad, dirty baseball and he should have gotten tossed for it.
  9. How quickly are suspensions doled out after a bench-clearing and when can you start serving after it's announced, provided there's no appeal? provided it's quick on both accounts, we can make a brawl worthwhile. we head to KC for 3, then got the O's at home before the Yanks while the Twins have the Angels at home then a 4 game set at texas. I'd say Linebrink's the first off the bench if you're starting an inning, or send someone in to get out of trouble then send him out to start the next inning. Have him jaw with the batter before the AB even starts, then drill him in the back. Keep the SPs in the bullpen and tell Kotsay he better be the first out of the dugout and land the first good punch.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) Yet can't get a big hit late in the game to save his life. jeez, give it a rest
  11. QUOTE (lukeman89 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) i bet he was thinking it was such a stupid idea, he would catch them off guard i think you're already a level beyond his thought process.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 11:13 PM) What is your definition of more? What I said? Or what the other poster said? Or ? In no way can it seem like AJP is being demoted or you can say goodbye to team chemistry. i'm also for getting castro more ABs without "demoting" AJ, but winning baseball games IS chemistry. even if castro replaced aj everyday, if the sox kept winning the magic chemistry would still be there.
  13. QUOTE (djcollie03 @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 09:39 AM) I guess it's a start but, it seemed pretty hastily put up to me. Not much to look at and I agree with a previous poster that you might as well tailgate if you're going to drive. If you're taking the EL, I'd rather pay stadium prices for beer in the stadium and watch BP or walk around. Long way to go but, a good idea. The postgame scene in DC was much more of a party atmosphere. Live band, beer tents, substantially larger area set aside. The one big difference is that the land is not owned by the Nationals - private owner got the permits and put it up. Not sure the Sox could get away with something that loud and raucous just because of the neighborhood. I recall someone saying the DC beer garden had to close at midnight. Anyone know if Chicago has similar ordinances? it closes about 45 min after last out.
  14. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jul 23, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) It's ok....but I don't know how successful it will be with the tailgating that's allowed. I'd rather go back to the car with my friends and hang for an hour where we can drink 5 beers for the price of one in the beer garden. I'd much rather have a real bar there... a substantial number of fans get to the park via public transportation, certainly enough to fill a beer garden along with those who will stop in for 1-2 even if they're not taking the el or possibly(hopefully, maybe) soon-to-be finished Metra stop.
  15. I believe the ability to sell past the 7th is the distinction they made between the Bullpen Sports Bar and a public sporting event and the difference in regulations for the two. The BSB most likely has a separate license and regulations as it's own bar and the beer garden will probably be the same.
  16. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 10:21 PM) Both slumping at the wrong time i'm not so sure this is either the wrong time or slumping.
  17. Any word on a Twins lineup? Morneau back tonight?
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 2, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) This also doesn't guarantee where your seats will be located. You could be looking just for the cheapest upper deck seats, and they could say only lower level behind home plate for $150 are available. If you can't afford that or won't spend that much, then you are s*** out of luck and lose your deposit. The only thing generally available to the public are seats in the upper corners and occasionally a random section upstairs that's not all the way in the corner. Pricing is set by MLB for most teams, if not all, teams and nobody seems to balk at the prices.
  19. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Jul 2, 2010 -> 08:54 AM) Hopefully this will cut down on the amount of people who were able to go to playoffs games because they were connected to some corporation that got a bunch of tickets. Stuff like that always annoyed me, especially when it's people who are not even really fans of the team and there's bigger fans out there that would've given anything to attend a playoff game. It's not going to affect that in the slightest. The only thing this is doing is making the tiny subset of tickets typically available via TM to the regular public even more limited, or most likely non-existent.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 1, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) If that's the case I would assume the available tickets in this program would run out rather easily if it's obvious a team is going to the post season. It looks like this already. If you look at the available dates for the BoSox, just the ALDS says recent market activity on games 1 and 3, but only 3 is available now.
  21. I don't want to derail the thread, it's just that our offensive is in the sorry state because 2 spots in the lineup every night are filled with gordon/kotsay/jones. If you're dedicated to gordon then please sit kotsay/jones when they're not spelling someone in the field and let vizquel rest 1-2 a week and come in as an LIDR.
  22. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 04:13 PM) And the fact that he's just not a very good baseball player, he has plenty of value as a part time player to spell your starters and give you some D but he's not a good enough hitter to be an everyday player especially in a lineup as offensively challenged as ours. It just so happens that he hit a hot streak just as our starting 3B went down so for about a month or so it was nice to have him in the lineup but he's going to cool off big time some time soon and he'll have to be relegated back to bench duty. Move him to 2nd in the meantime to get Dayan starts at 3rd or find ABs at DH for him. There's a guy that was brought up, in Kenny's eyes I'm sure, to get regular ABs in 2 spots, as the downside risk is minimal when the general production is already significantly under replacement value. Don't you think Kenny thought it was an ideal spot to get 50-60 ABs waiting on Teahan and getting a feel for what he's going to need if he's a buyer or what he's got as a seller?
  23. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) Beckham has hit the ball harder over the past few days than he's had all season. Not exactly sure what other signs of life can we expect? He's had a few 3 game hit streaks where he's shown similar "life" yet still looks uncomfortable and overmatched. He did do something new yesterday in managing to make 2 outs with one K. Even at DH, Ozzie seems to believe there's some downside to replacing a .200 hitter. There simply isn't, Dayan isn't going to go in there and hit .150 over significant ABs.
  24. Beckham is hitting .200 and showing no signs of life. The argument previously was that you can't move to viciedo/vizquel full-time because you're not sure how well vizquel would hold up, yet he's still playing everyday. What is the detriment of seeing if Viciedo is capable of hitting over .200 at this point, whether it's at DH or 3b? We're not looking to replace someone at 2nd or DH that's hitting .250 and there's downside if Viciedo hits .200. Everyone we're trotting out there is at the Mendoza line, there is no downside!!!! Ok, hitting at least, there is downside in the field.
