  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 12:15 PM) I agree with you, I think Ozzie did a nice job on the road trip. I wasn't pleased with the lineup card Saturday, but his hunch worked! We won without Rios OR Konerko, which pretty much means the results were perfect. Sitting one of those on Saturday and one on Sunday probably increases your chances on Saturday more than double the decrease on Sunday from sitting one. He had 3 guys hitting under .210 in the 3-5 slots, one of which is running at a clip much lower than .210 after a hot start. There's no good reason a major league manager should put that lineup out there and I'd venture a guess that 29 other managers would agree. You really can't say a specific trip is the result of a manager's prowess or idiocy. Manager's make a small amount of important decisions a game, most of which are scrutinized, but in actuality there's one right choice and the decision makes itself. The shortcomings lie in things like lineup cards and ignoring what the performance of your team and individuals is telling you.
  2. Hate to say it, but that booing would take place if the roles were reversed and we were down at the Cell. Fans as a whole are not as knowledgeable as the members of this site or the announcers, which is why they will continue to explain the legitimacy of bunting in that situation. It would probably take place at most stadiums other than Joe Robbie, I'm not sure people even know what baseball is in Miami.
  3. no, fielder is not coming to the white sox, even if we rattle off 10 in a row, which is a pipe dream along the lines of trading for fielder.
  4. The only thing joe cowley offers as a beat writer is access to the club that very few people in the world have. Chances are there's probably 25 people on this site alone that would be more insightful than joe if they had the same access.
  5. Lol, and lou just says in the in-game interview with Morgan that he's gonna start playing Colvin regularly.
  6. I don't even know if the latest article qualifies as journalism in any capacity.
  7. KHP, get some sleep. you're starting to sound like jeremy roenick on thursday morning.
  8. I find it hard to believe J.R. can possibly come to a decision to fire one, likely KW, and not both. Both have demonstrated terrible discretion in allowing this situation to even occur, no less allow it to ever get out. They're both participants in a rather dubious show of nepotism, which while it occurs fairly regularly in baseball, is certainly never discussed. Some people have said the pick of KW Jr in the 6th was probably the single-worst pick of the draft, with the white sox being the losers. And this is what they come to blows about! Yes, it was simply the straw that broke the camel's back, but they've both undermined their commitment or ability to perform their duties. Ozzie has continuously shown his commitment to family is going to prove to be a hindrance to dealing with Kenny and coaching the White Sox in particular. I have no issue with his strong family bond, but coaching the White Sox clearly strains both sides. It probably travels with him if Ozzie gets another job, but certainly not at the level it does with the history here. Kenny had previously not allowed outside issues to affect his ability to perform his job until this year. Even in disagreement with a manager, a GM is asked to maintain composure and a clear head. He can't even travel with the team at this point, which while not completely necessary, is often a tool a GM must use to perform his job. They've both lost it and share significant blame in creating this circus on top of this crap team. What kind of precedence does firing or "promoting" Kenny show. What kind of effect do you think this has on the Guillen family. Perhaps inflating the ever-growing egos of children who have never and will never play for the white sox and cause them to get even more vocal in matters involving this team? What's overlooked is that despite knowing their opinions have no effect on anyone with any authority, an opposition to his family causes Ozzie to react violently. He lets his kids behave this way and defends them to a fault. This will continue to put anyone in the front office or media in harms way with Kenny at the helm or not. I'm rambling, but there's no logical solution to firing one or the other. Keep them both, essentially saying I give up, or fire both, the correct decision.
  9. we don't have a better option on this team or in the system to take over for gordon, so why not let him play? honestly, this is the worst you could possibly expect from him, and nobody else has shown that on a daily basis they'd hit better filling his position. send him to the minors and let nix/omar platoon? when they're a combined .200 in the 20 games after when gordon's in the minors, what have you accomplished?
  10. .600 from here on out gets us to 89 wins on the season, and we'll have to actively contribute to quite a few losses for the twins to make sure 89 would get it done. when kenny gave the last proclamation of 60 games we were through about 40. At that point I figured in his eyes it'd take 12-8 over 20 to not be sellers, with going at least 5-5 in the first ten. Taking 4 games back in getting to .500 is nothing to sneeze at, but i'm sure we'd be in a more favorable situation going into game 60 if kenny saw they could run off 5 in a row or 8 out of 10 because you'll have to do that 1-2 times to be able to play .600 ball over 112 games. A major dilemma for kenny is the fact that one of his pieces to deal, at least as a salary shed, is on the clock. He's not going to have the liberty of waiting until the deadline to show his hand. About the worst result would be to go 6-4 again here, aj goes 5/10, then we stink again. we need to start stealing a game here and there and there was probably one more to be had this series, even if it was on the road against the rays.
  11. It looks like he's finally starting to get some of the backlash he's deserved for years. Neyer also went off on him today and another AP story or two found ways to poke jabs at him. Neyer is fairly spot on with I think the proper way to think about an ump. I feel as though the best ump in the world should probably remain nameless until about 10 years in the game when people discuss the quality of his work and that's where the discussion should begin and end. You can agree about his rant from earlier this year, but he's got no right in voicing any personal opinion regarding the game he is paid to officiate. If he wants to use the union as a tool to get some of these opinions out there, then do that, just like every politician before you has done.
  12. As the legend grows... Harper goes 6-6 with 4 HRs, staving off elimination for CSN in the JuCo World Series. The day before he hit for the cycle. Yeah, yeah, the score was 25-11 and winds were blowing out at an estimated 45 mph. Harper Weekend Recap
  13. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 18, 2010 -> 10:42 PM) This team is playing .500 ball for the last 6 weeks or so. They need to get more consistent. that's the full season, and they're 6 games under.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2010 -> 10:04 PM) One little mistake... and my mom got mad... she's says you're moving with your auntie and your uncle in BelAir!
  15. I don't see a logical decision made in the creation of this one. It's almost like he lost a bet to Oney watching a game show and Ozzie didn't realize it was a re-run.
  16. I take it Rios and Beckham are playing in the B game in Tucson, anyone got the lineup for that one?
  17. in any given year i'm about a 50/50 shot it makes it home from opening day. this year they found a way to make it even more difficult to stick in a pocket or jacket, meaning there was no chance i was getting it home. that's disappointing, i love the fridge schedule.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2010 -> 09:55 AM) That was my point. They didn't predict anyone new appearing. tough to predict anyone having an effect over the course of a full decade if they're not yet in the majors. beckham's already a ridiculous stretch.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 27, 2010 -> 01:40 PM) In the past five seasons, only one AL team each season has scored over 900 runs. (NYY 3x, Bos 1x, Tex 1x) So now I am supposed to believe that the Twins due to the addition of 39-year old Jim Thome are gonna score over 900 runs and become one of the top 5 AL offenses of the last 5 years????? Wow, 2nd place here we come! he's not saying that at all. the fact of the matter is that on average, we are expected to score substantially less runs than the twins. Nobody's saying the twins are scoring 900, but the statistics this year will definitely be correlated to the ones caufield posted. A top end of approximately 900 runs can probably be extrapolated to some sort of distribution curve where the twins will be ahead of the sox every step of the way. This isn't saying it's going to happen, but its a significantly better proposition than the sox. That being said, this thing has some serious limitations. You're using two statistics and using these two alone as a substitute for any other available statistics. while they often can be a good substitute, OBP for Jim Thome most likely is way overvalued in comparison to pierre. Another thing to consider is the twins statistics are not controlled for ballpark or anything and all previous statistics are based on playing half the season in the metrodome, at least for the majority of people on the roster now. In 3 years you may see a significantly different trend for some of these guys. Can anyone point me to the explanation of the musing lineup analysis page? honestly if its obp and slg only its value is probably only in taking some sort of average of different lineups and an overall comparison to an average of another team.
  20. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 01:44 PM) What I'm hearing is maybe cocaine, not likely marijuana. and this is his 2nd positive, correct? at least that's what's stated in the article. considering how long cocaine is detectable by a test, it sounds like he may have a serious problem. you have to do cocaine most likely within the 48 hrs before to test positive. he either got really unlikely with timing or he's been doing quite a bit of it.
  21. QUOTE (Ranger @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) Touch 'em all. You can only max out those cards if you are absolutely positive that money is going to come back to you during the year. Like in '06, they knew they would make that money back because of the World Series excitement. That's as close to a guarantee of revenue as they will ever get. You cannot expect a team to ever take an operating loss just to go balls out in the hopes the money they spend will win them a title. It's simply too big of a gamble and it's a lot of money to be playing around with. It's just not smart. Tis is certainly optimal for most major league teams where your only expectation can be a fickle, casual fanbase. If there's a way to convince the brass that short-term ooperating losses will lead to continued revenue growth its something you can explore. However, there's no way a city like Chicago is going to be able to support 2 teams with consistent support from a non-casual or continuously supportive fan. I'd argue that consistent winners, even absent a WS or AL title for extended periods will experience greater growth than your average MLB team, but spending certainly doesn't equal success in baseball like it may elsewhere. I think there's probably one too many variables for the south siders to behave in a less rigid fashion than they are currently and for good reason. With spending guidelines we need to investigate other avenues at creating a successful team, where we're starting to show success, or at least a healthy interest, in international scouting. The next step is more successful scouting across the board in the system.
  22. QUOTE (since56 @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 08:05 PM) I am not predicting total collapse or gloom actually that's pretty much exactly what you're doing.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 04:15 PM) Nice work, do you have split season? My goal is section 144 for splits. I just moved up to section 149, row 11. i've got the weekday for the seats next to yours and we were told 149 row 28. honestly i just don't believe our rep or the fact that nobody with a weekday plan closer to us has not renewed. i'm not all that angry, its just not very believable. i think the ability to move is directly proportional to the amount of work your rep wants to put into finding you better seats. i'm sure there's limitations from the sox on how much time they can spend helping someone who's already paying but there has to be some customer service. i'd be happy with just a little bit of disclosure on how/when people are allowed to move. the lack of disclosure makes me believe it's completely relationship based and your best bet is threatening to cancel.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 29, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) They can't really do much until they gets temps above something like 50 degrees. no way, you can get pretty much anything done, and have to, given the fact that a huge portion of the offseason happens to be winter. they can get anything they need to done provided it doesn't get down to 5-10 degrees. if they waited for 50 we'd be 3 weeks into the season.
