That's great! My wife got me this one for my birthday:

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) So many free energy jokes, and only a few years to get them in... Balta's science-nerdiness makes me look downright cool by comparison.

Psychology is a soft science, really just barely more than pseudoscience, and you're better off spending your money on gambling, hookers, and booze than getting a Psych degree.

QUOTE (Yoda @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) Please tell me I'm not the only one who experiences this . . . frequently. You are a freak of nature and I'm frightened. I'm actually jealous of everybody who has cool, vivid dreams. except for the zombies, mine tend to be rather mundane.

Happy Birthday, YAS! Hope it's a good one.

What an awesome guy and amazing career. I may have to pull working from the shelf and read it again this week. The thing that always amazed me about Terkel was how effortless he made his interviews sound. He could talk to ANYBODY - musician, artist, activist, blue collar man - and distill the essence of that person in the course of a short interview.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 04:08 PM) I don't go to office hours much, but every time I've gone they've been there, which is nice. For you professors out there, does a student attending your office hours (e.g. showing they care enough to ask for extra help) give them any extra benefit when it comes to grading, etc? If they show up with the aforementioned Guinness, then yes absolutely. Seriously, I'm more along the lines of Tex's prof - the grade you're going to get from me is the grade you earned. Percentage-wise, you've got to be within a percentage point of making a grade before I'll even consider a bump. And you're only going to get that bump if you haven't been a paon in my arse all semester. I sound like a ton of fun, don't I?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) You old bastard. You went to college before emails. No new-fangled music CDs either. Here's a vintage shot of SS pumping up the jams:

I provide my phone number as well, along with a warning not to call me after 10 pm. Email solves most things anyway, unless somebody is bringing in a 6-pack of Guinness as a bribe gift for the prof.

Dr. Flaxx's office hours are "By Appointment" and it says so right on the syllabus. Problem solved.

I will be out Trick-or-Treating with the kids tonight while the wife hands out the loot at home. I;m going for the easy costume this year - a novelty stocking-cap-with-bloody-hatchet stuck-in-it. The kids are going to be grim reapers and/or vampire kids. We have an army of carved pumpkins and a fog-belching skull on the front porch, pumpkin lights in the trees, hanging vampires and ghosts, a blood-dripped "Beware" window applique', and a life-sized skeleton clawing its way pit of a front yard grave site. Yea Halloween!

QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) Ahem, No. Heard a couple tracks, how about more sampling? Geez, You kids I actually like it. Guy has an uncanny ability to layer lots of disparate songs from all over the map with his mashups.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2008 -> 04:06 PM) OK, I'll bite... neti pot? It's a little genie-bottle-looking thing used for (yuk) sinus irrigation. Not to be confused with natty pot, which you can get from this guy

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 08:01 PM) Wow, this is sort of strange for me. I'll have to read up on it. We did YMCA with the kids first and were underimpressed with their progress. Did ISR after that and it was amazing how well they took to the water from then on.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 04:10 PM) That's easily the worst beer I've ever seen. It's even worse than PBR, and that's saying something. They served VB on the plane from LA to Sydney, and I was amazed at how horrid it was. It took a good three Nelson's Bloods down in the Rocks the night I landed to get the taste of VB out of my mouth.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) It was a sad moment when the gallon was empty. I figure I got a bargain. $20 plus a $10 tip. He is my favorite. He even tossed in the use of a couple glasses but no paper umbrellas. Hell, that is a bargain. If I send you a jug can you get it filled for me?

QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) I gave the recipe to my favorite island bartender, along with a flameproof gallon container, and had him mix me up a big batch. I bought some crushed ice and whirled it away in the blender back at the condo. It paired nicely with the chilled shrimp at lunch. The grilled fish and crab cakes at dinner. I did have to walk to the store to get some fruit for garnish. I was drinking Planter's Punch last night but I have some Pimento Dram steeping and I think it's a Jamaica Punch night tonight.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:10 PM) Australia - Fosters. Doubt you'll have many happy people around you, after they drink that though. Yeah but it beats the hell out of that gawdawful Victoria's Bitter. I could go for a couple of Tooheys Olds right about now though.

We did ISR with both of our kids and I highly recommend it. My wife and I can remember back to a time when our very young children were fearful of the water but the kids certainly can't. As far as they know, they've been swimming since the day they were born. With ISR I think a lot depends on the particular instructor. Ours was great – did the lessons right out of her pool at home, and for our youngest kid I even bartered and gave her kids free guitar lessons in return for free swimming lessons.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) BTW thank you for the recipe. I can't go into details, but much fun was had while sipping rum punches at then island this weekend. Did you use the Wray and Nephew overproof? If so, did you do the allspice infusion? Hope it came out well. It sounds like it helped fuel a bit of. . . relaxation at any rate.

Unsolicited information alert! I'm taking back any perceived recommendation for the Trader Vic's "Authentic Dark" rum from earlier posts. I just opened a new bottle and they've gone and screwed it up. There's a distinct vanilla taste in the flavor profile now that has never been as prominent as it is now, and it definitely made an unbalanced rum punch when i tried to use it as the only dark rum in the mix. I'm sure it will lend depth used sparingly here and there, but steer clear of TV dark as a backbone rum in your drinks. Coruba, Myers, or Goslings are all much better options.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 10:51 PM) In no way am I directing this post towards you, Flasoxx, but I have a few in me and feel like saying this. Who else reads threads they're not really interested in until they see a post that seems too long to read, and then just completely throws the thread away? I do it all the time. No offense taken. My wife tells me to shut the fµ@k up all the time too. I'll just keep my recipe for the perfect mai tai to myself then.
