Helplessly Hoping Love isn't lying - it's loose in a lady who lingers, saying she is lost. And choking... On hello. The whole song just has the greatest alliteration in it... damn. That is the one CSNY song I always insist on playing out if the guys I'm with can hold down the parts. By dafault (ie, because I can hit the high notes), I've always been stuck with Graham's line (not that I'm complaining). But lately it's just been a duo thing, so I've gotten a chance to come down and do David's part. Some day I'll get together with somebody who can handle the high registers and I can actually try give Stephen's line a go.

Happy B-day to a SoxTalker who makes me laugh out loud on a regular basis.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:18 PM) I think it's kinda sad and not cool at all. What, the decimation of an elephant population almost to the point of inviability? Yes, that is enormously saddening, of course. But, from the observational standpoint of seeing the (likely) results of directional artificial selection over the course of a few generations it is compelling evidence that the population (and others like it) need more protection. An added ironic twist that Soxy, and Balta recognize here, though, is that the poaching has taken many of the fittest male variants out of the breeding pool and the apparent result is an increase in the frequency of tuskless males born into the population – poetic justice because they will be of no value to ivory poachers.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 12:12 PM) Don't you just adore the high standard he's holding himself to...to paraphrase.... "No convicted felons will work in the White House" This coming of course from the same guy who last week suggested that his pending SCOTUS nominees need not be judges... or even lawyers (hell, maybe I should apply). Presidential hubris attains new heights.

Note the subtleties in the change of tune. Now it's not enough that you leaked the information to get wired from the White House staff. You now actually have to be found guilty of a crime. Very convenient for Karl and, very likely for Scooter Libby as well. I think it's all going to hinge on whether the six or so journalists called by the 'unnamed administration staffer' while shopping the Plame story to them come forward and confirm that Plame was in fact knowingly outed at that time. I don't know if those cold calls to the press happened after Novak and the official spoke, but if so then I think a strong argument can still be made that the outing was deliberate and knowing.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:06 AM) Sorry. I knew I should have paid more attention during the evolutionary part of my bio classes. I'm just thankfull your bio classes still had an evolutionary part...

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 01:02 AM) I heart natural selection. As do I. But in this case it is artificial selection apparently pushing the bell curve to the left and increased incidence of lack of tusks. Just like overfishing of the large adult fish has artificially selected for animals with a smaller mean size to reproductive maturity, humans culling the would-be top breeding males in the population has allowed less fit variants with to get their tuskless genes into succeeding generations at a greater frequency. The guy in the article who said the hypothesis needs to be tested is correct, but at only a couple hundred animals in the China population, this may very well be a case where a 'founder effect' can occur and where the rare no-tusk alleles are not swamped by the wild type alleles of the more fit variants. Similar to the cases of frequent polydactyly in some highly in-crossed pocket of humans. And, Soxy, you've broken my heart. That would be an automatic letter grade deduction in one of my classes "Elephants evolve to combat poaching"? Aaaagh!! That suggestion is way too teleological for my tastes. How about "Rare population characteris increase as a result of anthropogenic selection pressure"? Yes, that's better, I think.

I agree with you entirely, it's about a lot more than outing a single agent. And it carries through to all the families that are exposed now as well that are shielded from having ties to the operatives for a reason. The bit from The Note just has me concerned that there is maneuvering room for Rove's lawyars.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 11:58 PM) Magical Mystery Tour wasn't Paul's idea either, unless you ask everyone else associated with the project. That dubious venture was all Paul, all the way. Not that Two Virgins or Life With the Lions were gems either...

A potential technical stumbling block to showing actual illegality was brought up in yesterday's abcnews.com's The Note. It had to do with the fact that Plame was not on overseas deep cover assignment at the time she was outed. Certainly a technicality, but it sounds like exactly the kind of little legal opening a crack team of lawyers can pounce on and get him off. Checking my scorecard though, there is still one White House source of the two initially alluded to by Novak that remais unaccounted for. Lots of renewed attention on Ari. Maybe the "other interests" he left the post to pursue include a keen interest in not being incarcerated? Doesn't sound like "Scooter" is off the hook either, and he is a person who has been personified as being "obsessed with Joe Willson" by unidentified staffers.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 04:31 PM) There's a definite history to poor treatment of Pakistanis in British society. It's even been the focus of recent British literature. Like "The Black Album" by Hanif Kureishi. In the neither here nor there department... The 'Black Album' Kureishi takes his title from is of course the unreleased/heavily bootlegged Prince album that was supposed to be the follow up to Lovesexy. (it was officially released as a limited edition CD several years later.) Curiously there is another tie-in, albeit probably coincidental. The Black Album is also the name of a coveted 3-LP Beatles bootleg containing material from the Get Back sessions (the stuff that eventually came out on Let it Be). The album has a couple early working versions of the song that eventually became Get Back, only then it was called "No Pakistanis". Kinda gives the line "get back to where you once belonged" a whole new meaning, huh? And as vitriolic as that sentiment is, you'd think it was a John song and not a paul song: ...don't dig no Pakistani's taking all the people's jobs. Oh, get back! Get Back! Oh, get back to where you once belonged... But in point of fact, Paul has insisted that the song was meant to be social satire and not racism. [/threadjack]

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) that's what I thought, but you have heard people say cliTORis, haven't you? QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 03:54 PM) Yes, and it drives me insane. The way it's been explained to me is that you say it the first way if you want to get the word over and cone with quickly and the second way if you want to linger on the word. But then again maybe my source of information is just suggesting that there's nothing wrong with lingering a while on the clitoris.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) Do you think it's best to let them decide when they're old enough? First off, that would be one confused kid... Secondly, usually some sort of corrective reconstruction is needed because the male and female genitalia is often not fully developed. I think some decisions are best left to the kids when they are old enough, but I don't think this is one of them. On the other hand, I do think that the plastic surgeon's reccomendations often are morn of expediency and not necessarily the right decisions. Knowing as much as we do now about male and female brains literally being wired differently, and about the physiology of secondery sex characteristics, I'd suggest it is best to do a karyotype of the kid and see what his/her chromosomes have to say about the true sexual identity. XX and the surgeons should do all they can to reconstruct female genitalia that look and function as well as possible (although very often the fix is cosmetic and the individual will not be able to bear children). XY and the docs do what they can to construct appropriate male genitalia.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 01:47 PM) You know what, let's not talk about your baby in this sick thread. Could you split out these posts? I'm still new at that. BTW, if it's girl, maybe she can grow a penis* *See Woman Grows Penis Thread I see you wasted no time in making this new thread a sick thread as well. As for baby names, SS, how about something like 'Blackout' or 'SoxTalksDown'... I mean, that's gottt be how you found the time to conceive in the first place, right?

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 01:53 PM) Tonight, I will pray that I don't grow a vagina.... EDIT: After reading that her penis grew in place of the Clitoris, it is possible that the clitoris just grew. I read somewhere in one of my biology classes that the clitoris could grow large enought to be mistaken for a penis. Your bio recall is good – they are both derived from the same embryonic tissue. There are obvious structural differences, such as the urethra not travelling through the clitoris but lying next to it, and also the fact that there's something like 100x as many berve endings in the clitoris compared to the penis. Most of the cases of ambiguous genetalia at birth involve a clitoris that is so oversized it could be mistaken for a penis or a penis so underdeveloped that it could be a clitoris. Then there are true hermaphrodites as well who have both ovarian and testicular tissues and at least some of the appropriate apparatus to deliver the gametes produced by each. Often shortly after the birth of such intergender individuals, the reconstructive surgeons will consult with parents as to which way they want to construct near-normal genitalia and they will base their reccomendation on which sex organs is most complete or best developed.
