  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 09:22 PM) Hermanson will not pitch unless it's a save situation. Ozzie is on the record saying that is a 100 pct guarantee. I thought Hermanson was on the bereavement list because of a sickness in the family? They might not pull this out, but I thought Viz did well tonight, getting out of the jans he got out of.
  2. QUOTE(winodj @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:22 PM) Meet the Feebles meeting the Muppets. That's what I want to see. Smart money is on the knife-throwing 'Nam Vet heroin addict rabbit and the misogynistic walrus. Pepe the King Prawn, you don't have a prayer.
  3. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:39 PM) But we're a Constitutional republic that cherishes the rights of individual liberty instead of losing that at the expense of mass hysteria or mass bigotry. It helps to remember that. Shut up and get back in formation, mutherf***er!
  4. QUOTE(SAVVY18 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:25 PM) So they are doing research because the fish is facing extinction and they go and kill one...Hmmmmm. Doesn't sound too smart. No, it was caught in a village on the Mekong by village fishermen and the scientists just documented it. Live release of the animal had in fact been negotiated by local environmental folks, but the animal expired and was subsequently eaten. Lots of fisheries data derives from commercial or subsistence catch reports for preciselyt the reason you allude to. It doesn't make sense for the most part to conserve through killing the animals, but if they are already being caught by fishermen that represents a good opportunity to collect data. The potential problem there of course is the possibility of exploiting fragile stocks nominally for the sake of science, much as the Japanese continue to do with their "scientific (*Bulls***!*) whaling hunts."
  5. QUOTE(winodj @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:08 PM) That's kind of weird to me because the prayers to a deceased person seem to be in violation with the first commandment. One thing about the Catholic Church that I've never understood. Oh, yeah, the Cult of Rome's fascination with the Blessed Virgin and all of the saints certainly crosses the lines into idolotry in the eyes of lots of Protestent denominations.
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 02:15 PM) morality is unquantifiable? That's unpossible! I don't know if you forgot to use the green there. Morality is subjective. Moral codes, on the other hand, are systems that may take on the appearance of objectivity through custom, practice, and adherance or violation of the given code. That which we label as "moral" conform to the given code, play by the rules set forth by a particular society, etc. Humans societies construct their own social reality, including the externalization of ideas to begin to form a moral code and the later internalization of and adherance to the social imparatives dictated by the moral code. But, the content of a given moral code is not universal across societal or historical boundaries because morality itself is not objective.
  7. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 02:03 PM) INterestingly enough, unless I'm stupid(entirely possible), Disney isn't even listed amongst the top gay-friendly companies according to gay.com: http://www.gay.com/business/article.html?c...rnum=311&page=1 They have a Corporate Equality rating of 86 (out of 100) according to that source. While that is not bad, there are 72 companies with a rating of 100, so, no they are not in that top tier group according to the metrics that go into that index.
  8. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:32 PM) John Paul II was a saint. Let's not belittle him by basically inferring that he made the requirements less strict in order to become a saint himself one day. By many accounts, JP2 was a very good person, but the fact was he did make sweeping changes to the canonization procedure in the early part of his papacy. As for the miracle issues, first I checked and wino was right - you only need two miracles total (or one miracle plus martyrdom) to be considered. I had thought that the initial documented miracle leading to beatification was distinct from the two needed to be canonized, but I was wrong and that first miracle casrries over. As for the beatification question, by the Vatican's own stipulation the Celina Kammerer case might not warrant consideration because her prayers were to God and not to the deceased pontiff. The Vatican stipulates that the miracle is supposed to take place as a result of a specific petition to the candidate, and not to God. What is missing in the fast-track process here is the perspective gained by letting several years pass before the question of canonization is taken up. JP2's enormous worldwide popularity in life should not be the driving force behind the canonization push because the pressure to canonize even if documented miracles are lacking will be very great.
  9. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:08 PM) There we go with that sanctimonious moral high ground crap again. It's your opinion that being a gay-friendly megacorp is the right thing to do & nothing more. Stop speaking like you are the de-facto standard on morality because your not. Your very far from it. As for why Eisner did it in the first place it's no secret. Disney employs more homosexuals than any of the other theme parks. They even rival some of the studios. This isn't something they sought out to do. It's more along the lines of something they discovered. When you compare their salaries for artists & designers to other like companies they are one of the lowest. Their homosexual-friendly demeanor is more a mechanism to control wages than anything else. Morality is subjective, and therefore there can be no standard – de facto or otherwise. There are some companies that believe it is good business ethics to insure that people get the same rights to employment, wages and benefits regarless of sew, race, orientation etc. In the case of the Disney theme parks, you are correct – it is a case where they are ensuring equally crappy wages for all low-level employees.
  10. OK, Smart Guy... where does Godzooky fit into all of this??
  11. Tiger Sharks are known to be one of the most aggressive species of shark. And they are much bigger sharks, making the need for their food source to be bigger. No, that is what he's saying – that tiger sharks are have a history of attacks on humans. Maybe there needs to be a comma in there, but you are in aggreement.
  12. A very helpful rundown of continuity – or non-continuity, in some cases. Thanks. I always just chalked it up to Toho not really caring about continuity and simply capitalizing on the smash hit they had on their hands by cranking out new films and not worrying about it. Calling Gigantis a member of the same species as Godzilla indicated there was at least some concern that viewers would not buy that Godzilla could regenerate after dying in the first film. Still, they couldn't help muddy the waters here by referring to Godzilla and Gigantis as members of an acnient, long-dormant race without including the nuclear testing element in Gigantis' origin. As for that second series beginning with 1984, I know they completely screwed up the continuity of all the films with Godzilla Vs. Kking Gidorah by having the time travellers take prehistoric/pre-irradiated Godzilla off the island before the nuclear testing that made him in the original ever happened. So I assume that means NONE of the earlier Godzilla events ever happened. I've not seen any of the new Gamorrah films. I knew they were doing some new ones but I didn't know they had already turned out three of them. He was hands-down my favorite giant movie monster as a kid. He loved kids, he had a glowing fang signal tooth thing, and he could shoot jets out of his the leg holes in his shell and fly - what's not to like? Gamorrah is really neat, He is filled with turtle meat. Gamorrah is the friend of all children. We love Gamorrah!
  13. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 08:40 AM) It's a myth. Both the US version and the Japanese version of King Kong Vs. Godzilla have the same ending. I knew you'd be the person to clear that up! Now, if only you can tell me why Gamorrah sometimes flies like Superman using just his real leg jets and other times he flies by spinning around like a pinwheel with all four leg jets going, all my childhood Japanese monster movie questions would be answered. .....Other than the lingering question of how a Godzilla that had been reduced to a rotting skeleton in the original film could come back for so many other films, taht is...
  14. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 11:47 PM) Yes but if your in the ocean and a shark decides your food you are pretty much screwed, in a car you can at least have a little control and swerve out of the way of an accident or something in the ocean your helpless.... although unless its a tiger shark most times they wont attack. None of that negates the fact that you are still 1,000 times more likely to die on the road that at the wrong end of a shark. Shark attacks make national news because we humans have a morbid fascination with sharks. The real tragedy is the story that doesn't get reported. Since 1994, global annual fisheries landings of sharks has been at more than 71 MILLION individual sharks. Compared to the 61 unprovoked shark attacks on humans WORLDWIDE in 2004, only 7 of which were fatal (again, this is worldwide), I'd say the sharks are on the losing end.
  15. QUOTE(Brian @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 06:04 PM) I like the Jack Black casting after seeing this teaser. Wasn't a fan of Lord of the Rings, probably cuz I never read the books. Nice to see a guy who did a successful franchise like LOTR move on to something new. King Kong teaser I'm telling you, you haven't seen all sides of Peter Jackson until you've seen Bad Taste and, expecially Meet the Feebles. It's like the Muppet Show on very bad acid.
  16. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 08:46 PM) Ummm, in the original film Kong only stood about 18-20 feet tall. Only in King Kong Vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes was Kong comparable to Godzilla. Have you seen the Japan-release ending to KK Versus Godzilla, where Kong dies and Godzilla wins? What am I saying, of course you have. And what was the name of the Japanese film with the two giant ape things, a good brown one and an evil green one? The Gargantuans or something like that. That was one of my favorite Saturday night Creature Feature flicks as a kid.
  17. QUOTE(winodj @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 02:54 PM) I believe you need two miracles but its really just a matter of jumping through the hoops before he's declared a saint. Three, I think.
  18. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) I hated all the movies he did before Born on the 4th.. but after seeing his performance in it I watched a few of the others and realized that it was a bit difficult to play such a dork. I absolutely loved Minority Report and that one he just did with Jamie Fox (of which I can not recall the name of to save my life here... grrr). I'm looking forward to this one. Moreso because of Dakota Fanning. IMO, she is one hell of a child actress. Collateral. Just saw it this weekend and thought it was decent. I really liked Minoritty Report as well, and I also quite liked the Last Samauri, even though it strongly suggests Tom's pretentiousness and is now bordering on a Kevin Kostner level.
  19. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 01:29 PM) He's a great actor! Especially in that one movie where he plays the young cocky guy!!! Yaeah, that was Top Gun... no wait, it was Days of Thunder, er.. no, Cocktail.... I mean Risky Business... no, wait... I never gave him any credit as an actor until Born on the 4th of July and Rainman. But, no, range and versatility are not among his strong suits.
  20. I think we've revisited this conversation every year for the last two or three around here, Balta, and we always throw around the same sorts of numbers to underscore the irrationality of it. And in the end, the folks who are irrationally afraid of sharks are still going to be irrationally afraid of sharks no matter how remote the chances of attack because it is the nature of irrational fear. For me, it's friggin' dentists... For others, it' sharks, or snakes, or spiders, or the Cubs winning the WS before the White Sox... Everybody is deathly afraid of something I think. As for the shark phobia, we all know where that struck home for lots of people:
  21. QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 12:21 AM) No way, too much over the top romance in that movie. I like classics like Shane and what not, but the acting just wasn't up to par. Ach, screw that. The scene with the guys waving the white flag before getting toasted, and the scenes with everybody huddled in the church knowing they're about to be killed... and then the alien machines just start to shut down because the aliens had no immunity to terran viruses... that is CLASSIC When War of the Worlds, Time Machine, TOBOR, or Day the Earth Stood Still came on Family Classics hosted by Frasier Thomas back in the day it was the definition of must-see TV for sci-fi kids.
