When I upgrade my car in a year or two, I'm looking for a minimum 40 MPG highway rating.

Was just gonna link that, hysterical.

I'd rather the issue be overturned on its merits rather than a technicality. Both cases are about technicalities legally.

Here are some ideas that the Democrats have that most people agree with. Women deserve control over their body. Health care should be affordable. We should have a balanced budget. The US should be energy independent by 2020. The Voting Rights Act should be renewed. There should be a comprehensive immigration reform package which should address both immediate concerns regarding border security and also stemming the flow of attempts to cross illegally. But I'm sure you're going to say they aren't really ideas. Because you always do, Kap. Every time they come up with an idea - you say they don't mean it, or its not good enough. At least there are debates about what to do in the Democratic Party. The only substantive public discussion about how to change our Iraq policy in a way that's beneficial to the US is in the Democratic Party for example. You know why I like the Democratic Party? It's the only place where you can be pro-choice OR pro-life and be welcomed in by the party leadership. It's the only place where you can be for OR against the Iraq war policy and be welcomed in by the party leadership. It's the only place where you can disagree with the party line and be allowed in, and work to change hearts and minds within the party. By the way, Howard Dean, and a handful of other senators have said that they will only support Lieberman in the general election if he wins in the primary. Which is as it should be, if he bolts the party, he shouldn't expect the party's support.

I'm not a big Obama fan policy-wise, but speeches like this is a good reason needs a good dose of people like him.

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 07:12 PM) less weird and more like a corrupt recount Hard to do, the NAP is the party in power, I do believe.

Weird. It's an exact reversal it seems.

Interleague play; is it growing tiresome?
Rex Kickass replied to mr_genius's topic in The Diamond Club
Isn't 50% of our schedule currently division games? I always thought that the interleague games took away from other inter division games. It seems like we play the west more than the east this year for example. But I'm probably wrong. -
I'm thinking of Sri Lanka/Ceylon.

I miss his talk show on WLS-FM from 1994.

Myannmar is the original name of the island I think. Burma is the colonial name.

Appears the recount is showing signs of a reversal. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060705/ts_nm/...HNlYwMlJVRPUCUl Still early though, so we'll see.

I think this is the right thing to do. If anyone should get arrested for this, its the doctors who did it in the first place.

1.3 million is what I've heard. The assembly hasn't passed a single budget, and Corzine has offered three compromises in three days. He forced them to stay in session all day yesterday.
-
This is one f***ed up story. A lot of infighting between the Assembly and the Governor over the budget. The Governor is insisting on not borrowing to close a 4 billion dollar deficit. He's asked for a 1 cent increase in sales tax, coupled with 2 billion dollars in spending cuts. The Assembly has said no to that, and would rather increase taxes on people making between 200K-500K a year. But hasn't actually produced a budget that balances the budget without borrowing. (New Jersey is constitutionally bound to have a balanced budget.) Both sides are Democrat. Corzine is basically ruining his political ratings and potentially costing his party's majority in the state houses by letting things go this far - but the more I've seen him since the election, the more I realize he couldn't give a crap about elections... but just wants to do the right thing.

Sorry, I just figured you didn't look

So if he wants a guaranteed spot in the general, why doesn't he bow out of the Primary right now and just run as an independent? He could do that, assure that he won't change who he caucuses with, and probably set up a huge victory for himself in November. But he won't do that because he needs the help of the Democratic party to win in a competitive race. And he knows that it would be much easier to win under the Dem banner than the independent banner, because he could rely on the Democratic Party's ground team. Because he wouldn't have to face a serious challenge in the general. He doesn't have a ground organization - and given the campaign he's run in the primary, a Lieberman victory in the general with a loss in the primary would be far from a sure thing. Because Lamont would have labor behind him and a whole host of other organizations. Because Lamont isn't a bat s*** crazy left wing nut job. He's actually a pretty normal guy, who just thinks change is in order.

Umm, the link was to the Official White House website.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 11:16 AM) Working tonight. Taking the kid to see Cars in a few minutes, then catching a nap, grilling some steaks and heading to work. This weekend went by way too quickly. Don't you mean "The New Cars?" Oh wait, the movie... never mind.

If he wants to run as Democrat fine. If he wants to run as an Independent fine. If he wants to run as both. That's a bit of a problem. How would you like to be a Democrat in Connecticut and have your senator say, I don't care how you vote. If you decide you want change, I won't honor your wishes?

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 12:51 AM) The Aristocrats is better than the 93rd best comedy of all time. No Network? Napoleon Dynamite shouldn't even be sniffing that list. Dr. Strangelove should be higher on the list. This list can kiss my lily white, White Sox loving, comedy fan ass for three reasons: NO CHAPLIN NO BUSTER KEATON NO MARX BROTHERS They did give some respect to the great Mel Brooks which is good. Animal House is good, but I don't think it was the #1 comedy of all time. Nor was "Bananas" in there, or "Casino Royale."

I won't actually disagree with you there. But then again, its not the same thing. He never held this out as a threat to win a primary or anything like that. Instead, he flipped parties six months into a term in office. By the way, doing so afforded his constituency more power within the Senate for the 18 months following that point in time because of the deal he got to caucus with the Democrats. Jeffords never lost an election to turn independent. If Joe Lieberman decided in May of 07 to go independent, I'd b**** about it - but I'd ultimately respect the decision - because he's not using a potential party switch to extort support from a party he sells out on a fairly regular basis. And ultimately it's sad. Lieberman has been in the Senate 18 years, a VP nominee on a team that won a popular vote for President, and faced with a primary challenger - rather than actually run an intelligent campaign focused on showcasing his acheivements for his people and his party, he basically says that whatever happens in this election doesn't count. IE, your vote doesn't matter.

He didn't do that in the middle of an election did he? And that's a fundamentally different thing. He left his party. He didn't waiver about it and say "I'm gonna leave unless you elect me." He just left. There's a big difference there.

The IFE lead is nearly 400,000 votes at this point and there will be a recount at the request of the PRI candidate, although little is expected to change.
