Alan Greenspans last day on the job
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 31, 2006 -> 01:13 PM) Im doing just fine. Nobody is stepping on me. A rising tide lifts all boats. It's just the people that don't have a boat to begin with that drown.

Gas
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 31, 2006 -> 11:46 AM) Wow, I actually agree with you! I'm generally a free-market guy, but the (small number of) oil corporations are working together to keep prices and it's at the expense of the rest of the economy. I wouldn't mind seeing the Fed put a price cap in place. Scary, innit? It's not about a hard price cap - but I don't think it would be unreasonable to say that the fed government could place a cap on profit margin... like for example, an oil company could not charge more than a 30% markup on necessary items like gas or home heating oil. I'm sure this is way more simplistic than what would really be necessary, but something along those lines. It would be a solution that would allow oil companies to profit and profit well... but also a solution to help protect taxpayers.

Judge Samuel Alito's confirmation hearing
Because the President gets to nominate who he wants, and barring any obscenely wrong thing, generally the Senate's duty is to give an elected President his perogative. It's the right thing to do - although I understand the principles behind an Alito filibuster, I don't feel it was necessary. However, I think its generous that the Democrats are allowing "up or down votes" for our President's judicial nominations. Between 1995 and 2000, the Republican congress refused to allow one out of three judicial nominations an up or down vote in committee, let alone on the floor of the Senate.

Oscar Noms Are In...
Critics. And a lot of people actually. It's grossed over 50 million dollars in revenue in the last seven weeks and is still in fewer theaters than the average wide release movie. But I've only seen one movie on the whole list. That was Narnia.

Rick Morrissey Cubs vs. Sox article
Wait? There's a baseball team on the North side of Chicago??? When was someone gonna tell me? It's like when I found out that Seattle had a football team! I'm just... shocked.

Oscar Noms Are In...
I'm surprised Good Night and Good Luck got in instead of Syriana. I could see best picture going two ways. If Hollywood wants to make a statement, it's going to be "Luck." If Hollywood makes the popular pick, it'll be "Brokeback."

Judge Samuel Alito's confirmation hearing
Ever seen Obama speak? The guy is a rockstar, and a centrist - by the way. I'm not an Obama fan though. He's too much of an opportunist for my tastes.

Yeah, I know. But sorry, when I hear 700 Club phrases being thrown around, sometimes I can't help myself.

Gas
When I first read this thread, I thought this had to do with me eating too much falafel. I think these record profits and prices for consumers raise the specter of some form of control over cost and requirements to provide capacity. Whether we like it or not, American access to energy is a national security issue and we probably should have some protections in place to make sure that daily life for millions is not disrupted by oil shocks or jumps in pricing. Ordinarily, I wouldn't actually have a problem with free market - but the problem is that most of us live in communities designed to be accessed with $9 a barrel oil, not $70 a barrel.

God registers to vote
QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Jan 30, 2006 -> 05:14 PM) but then again, in an electoral college mentality, would a few hundred votes make a difference in Illinois or New Jersey? Now ask the same question about Ohio and Florida. New Mexico seems to be an annual trade off. A few hundred votes made a difference for Kennedy in 1960 in Illinois. Thank the underwater precincts of Chicago for that. And you're right about New Mexico. Sometimes for both parties

QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jan 30, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) Somebody tell this man he is elegible to vote in Illinois. Several times. Oh wait he is Republican. He better go to Ohio. Or Florida. Thats where Republicans cheat, Right? Correct, the Dems get Illinois and New Jersey, the GOP gets Ohio and Florida. And sometimes New Mexico.

Best brand of hot dogs
QUOTE(Soxy @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 06:53 PM) Smart ass. Anyway, my favorite is SmartDog (yes, they're meatless) but amazing. I think they taste better than the meat ones. Edit to add: Who the heck voted for Oscar Mayer? That's like voting for Pabst Blue Ribbon in a beer poll?!?!? What's so wrong with PBR? Now Schlitz would be the correct equivalent IMHO. I always like Koegels or Nathans.
