QUOTE (Wagz @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 12:28 PM) I agree with putting him in the pen. Im not saying Humber is good by any means but he could be a valuble cheap arm in long relief and spot start occasionally. Has there ever been a guy to throw a perfect game and move to the pen the year after? Interesting... Next year? He has been moved there in the same year.

QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 12:07 PM) The 4 game series at home with the Tigers September 10-13 may decide the Division. And in other news.
-
I really don't look at it like one stretch of games or another is key to winning the division. I think that the key is going to be playing a little better than 500 ball against everyone, in other words, just keeping up the same pace. But we must beat Detroit when we play them. Unless we totally start sucking against everyone else the Detroit games are going to decide the division. If we do start sucking against everyone else, the Detroit games won't matter anyway. Whether we are ahead of Detroit when we play them, or behind them, really the only thing that matters is beating Detroit.

QUOTE (spiderman @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 10:26 AM) I think selling Quintano on a high (assuming he finishes the season pitching well) does make sense, but so does keeping him for the cost certainty. I think the White Sox need, along with Sale, to have 1-2 other starters making low money. I think it's reasonable to assume that the 5th starter will be someone making a low MLB salary (Santiago? Axelrod? etc). I think it's pretty certain that Sale/Danks (assuming health for both) are guaranteed to be in the rotation as well so that leaves 2 open spots - Peavy/Liriano/Floyd are all in the mix, but they probably will need to move Floyd to clear some salary, and if Liriano does pitch well down the stretch, he may be the Peavy replacement (at much less money). These 2 things really shouldn't be debated. If you're selling high, it means that you really don't have faith that he can keep it up. If you don't think that he can keep it up, why would you want to keep a bad pitcher around just because of cost certainty. K.W. and his "team" have to decide who the true Quintana is and act accordingly.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 07:51 AM) Dan Straily makes his MLB debut for Oakland tonight. Arguably the best minor league pitcher this year. This guy was a 24th RD pick who just exploded in the A's system. Had a 11.4 K/9 to go along with like a 2.3 BB/9 or something this season in AA and AAA, which includes dominating in the PCL. Which means that he will face us in the upcoming series and shut us down.

My guess is Detroit.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 02:51 PM) I like it, as it's someone that can actually run the bases well off the bench. Also, I doubt Ventura will lead him off in games Well, if De Aza is getting the day off Wise would be or best option.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) Depending on the game I might be able to. Me too, let me know when.

Just about everyone in baseball will be placed on waivers this month. I wouldn't get too excited, 99% of them are a diversion to get just a few passed through.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 05:24 AM) Hell of a finish in that game last night. Unfortunately, Sir Albert is 7 for his last 15 with 4 HR & 2 2B as the Angels come to Chicago. Here's hoping that the Angels are now walking (well, flying actually) into a trap series at the cell. Do well in an emotional series against your main rival (sorry Oakland) and show up flat for the next series.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 02:57 PM) Not only that, but even the opposing radio teams know the patterns. Fastball/slider to right-handed hitters, fastball/change-up to the opposite sided hitters (threw one to Morneau, for example). He has absolutely got to get away from the predictability of that pattern and mix it up a bit more. As noted, if he and Jones are only get strikes called 15-20% of the time on his slider, every hitter will just lay off it and take their chances they'll get a fastball to drive in an at-bat. Very rarely have you seen either one of those guys throw 2 off-speed pitches for called strikes or even swing-and-a-miss recently. That's not on him, that's on the catchers (or bench) that is calling the game.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) I'd be alright with the $10 million if we stretch him out to start. I'd rather use the money for Liriano

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) I wonder if it would have been legal for us to offer the Reds a player or two to send to the Twins if they would have sent Span to Cincy? Legal or not I have no idea, but I like your line of thinking.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:50 PM) The thing with Konerko is the decline we've always been waiting for and never getting......the tale of Jermaine Dye shows how that decline--when it does come--can be painfully immediate when it does set in So you're suggesting that Paulie is done?

So for those of us at work, what is the score of this game anyway?

QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:51 AM) I thought Reed Johnson would have been a good pickup. We need an infielder.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:48 AM) But then you go ahead and get someone that's proven in the past they can excel off the bench in limited at bats. The reason Hudson is such a waste is that he doesn't provide you speed or power off the bench and he can only play one position on the field. Agreed, but who? Omar Visquel?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) Hudson is just an absolute waste of a roster spot right now. Frustrating they didn't make one more move yesterday to improve the bench. I'm not disagreeing, but is there anyone available who would look good at the plate getting at most 1 - 2 at bats a week on average? Hudson has had what 2 - 3 at bats in the last month. Where is Eduardo Escobar again?

QUOTE (Caesar @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) Glad to see we give up homeruns to guys hitting 200. Teams that pitch to Dunn could say the same thing.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) defense sure has been hurting this team lately Maybe it's karma for bashing the Tigers defense

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 10:13 AM) It's not just one game, although had he been terrible the attitude would be different. What we (well, the Sox really) have to look at is the potential. The guy definitely has the potential to be a great pitcher. He's shown flashes of brilliance in the past. If he can get his walks under control, he's that much better. He can throw a ton of pitches, and having better control will allow those 120 pitches to occur over 8 innings instead of 6. Regardless, we're not talking about a guy who's going to get $20MM a year like Grienke. The Sox could sign Liriano for around $8MM to $10MM a year. If that happens, great. We'd have a guy who can eat innings, be a solid guy in the rotation, and have the occasional brilliant game. Kind of like....oh, I don't know.....Gavin Floyd.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 09:55 AM) I still don't like the Twins. I hope Jake has a great game. Don't want to hear anymore of this stuff about "I didn't feel good out there today" from him. We need A plus efforts every game from now on. DO IT! These 2 things really do not have anything to do with each other. Jake probably gives A+ effort every time he goes out to the mound, that doesn't mean that he is going to feel good or have his best stuff every time.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) Who does Kenny pull off the waiver wire? There is certainly a UT type out there, probably a reliever too.Any expensive closers worth taking a shot on? I agree with this, but who. The only infielder who comes to mind would be Visquel. Reliever....would the Cubs waive Marmol and could Cooper fix him?
